This is an inexplicable ficlet born from the second picture in this post, where Scotty Caan (i.e Danny from Hawaii 5-0) is wearing a hideous ring he clearly stole off the set of The Vampire Diaries. There are many ways to deal with that, like wondering what Scotty Caan would be doing on the set of TVD, or why Danny Williams needs an immortality ring, but then [livejournal.com profile] robanybody said, That just makes his ring even MORE hilarious because, dude, you are not an immortal! And not just because you don't have the sword or the coat. Excuse me while I make endless Highlander jokes about him. And since my brain is a very confused place, this happened.

Steve is too late. He's too late and he knows he's too late, and if he took the time to sit down and think about it, he'd tell himself it's not such a disaster, because this is his team and they're perfectly capable of taking care of themselves. Kono would have gotten loose (again) and grabbed somebody's gun, or Chin would have met fewer thugs coming in from the other side and gotten to them already, or Danny would have done... something. It might still be all right. The fact that he just heard shots and a scream from up ahead where Kono and Danny are being held doesn't necessarily mean anything at all. Not necessarily.

He can't think any of that, though, because he's too busy kicking the door open. And maybe that's a good thing, because behind the door there's a room, and in the room Kono is holding a gun on Edwards, who looks completely freaked out, and two of Edwards' guys are lying on the floor with their hands on the top of their heads, and Chin is just bursting in through the door on the other side, and Steve somehow registers the glazed, shocked look in Kono's eyes before he registers that that's Danny lying on the floor, in a pool of enough blood Steve can tell there are only a very few things this could mean.

Maybe Chin also sees Kono's expression first, and maybe his brain is still working after Steve's has stopped, because he yells, "Don't --" Just as Kono makes a sound Steve can't put a name to and shoots Edwards in the shoulder.

**

The rest of it is a blur, muted and distant. They sit together answering questions and they sit together and stare at paperwork. Someone hands Steve a coffee. Steve drinks it, or maybe he hands it to Chin; he can't remember.

The first time he snaps out of it is when someone mentions they're trying to track down Rachel.

Steve stares, until it sinks in. Then he turns to stare at the others. Kono is looking sick. Chin just looks horribly fucking sad.

"No --" Steve says. He lurches up to stand. "I'll, I'll talk to her. She's --" He swallows, because he wants to say she'll want to hear it from him, but that might not be true; he's the one who got her kid's father killed, after all. Maybe she'd rather hear it from anyone else but him.

He can't do anything else, though, because want to or not, she deserves to hear it from him. And -- Danny would have wanted that. He's almost sure Danny would've wanted that.

**

They find Rachel in fifteen minutes. He knows all of them are glad to have something to do, even just for a bit. They want to come with him, and Steve thinks again how maybe that's better, but it feels right to do it alone.

She looks suspicious even before he says anything (or course she does; what else would he be here for?). When he does say it, there's a moment when she just stares at him, that bit where suspicion turns into reality but it's not a reality you can take in, and Steve looks at her and knows her face is about to crumple, that she might be about to cry or scream. If she hits him he'll let her, of course he'll let her; he'll be glad if she does, he thinks. He doesn't know what to do other than that.

Instead of any of that, she takes a half-wobbly step back away from him, and her eyes go distant. "Tell me exactly what happened," she says.

There are a lot of ways of dealing with grief. Steve's seen most of them some time or another. He's the last person who'll blame someone if their mode of dealing with things is lockdown. Still, though - he's lived with held-in grief for years, saw it in his dad and in himself. He guesses it's not too weird that Rachel seems to deal with it the same way, but it's not -- she's asking him about decapitation, and she actually seems relaxed once he answers, like the fact that the bullets that got Danny dead didn't somehow separate his head from his body makes it all okay. Actually like it makes it all okay, and Steve -- Steve likes Rachel, okay, as much as he knows her, likes her when she isn't trying to tear Danny's life down, he's glad that they have this truce that makes it okay for him to think she's all right. Had this truce. But she's relaxed, she's almost smiling, and grief takes a lot of forms but Steve doesn't think he can deal with hers. Not just now.

They stand there in silence for a few seconds and Steve just wants to get away from this, from her, from how she's almost vibrating with some kind of -- something, but he knows he can't; he needs to make sure Stan can come be with her, needs to, fucking hell, needs to find out if she needs help breaking this to Grace. He should --

"I need you to do something for me," she says.

He can't tell if he's feeling more relief or more dread. He nods at her to continue, and she says, "I need you to get me to Danny."

He stares at her, then understands. "You don't need to do that. We already identified him."

"No, no," she says. "It isn't that. I..." she looks at him, uncertain, then shakes her head and says, "Look, just -- let's say I need this for the closure, all right? I need... to see him again."

And Steve is about to say that yes, okay, when she adds, "some time when there's no one around. I need... privacy. To say goodbye." She's giving him a steady, decisive look, and Steve is somehow almost convinced she's lying to him but he has no idea why. "Can you get me in after hours?"

Steve opens his mouth, closes it, tries again. "Rachel," he says, carefully, "I don't think this is a good idea. You should --"

She cuts him off before he can say anything else. "That's okay," she says. "I think it'll be best if you go now. I need to think about this."

She listens to him offer to call people with that same inappropriately calm look on her face, and before he knows it he's out the gate, staring inside. He has no idea how that happened. Everything is still... off, wrong (of course it's wrong), but this is somehow more and he wishes he had it in himself right now to do something about it.

**

Chin and Kono sleep in his house that night. He's not sure if it's for him or for them or for everyone or what, but he's grateful either way.

He wakes up in the middle of the night, and it takes him a beat to realize the phone just rang, another beat to realize he should get it before it wakes them up, too.

"You know," somebody says, and Steve sits bolt upright, because it sounds just like the one person it can't possibly be, "I can't believe you got me shot again. I mean, it's not like you ever stopped getting me shot at, but there's still a slight but noticeable difference there, you know what I mean? And by slight but noticeable I mean the part where I'm bleeding --"

Steve is dreaming, of course; he knows he's dreaming, and that cuts all the way through him, because this feels real, because it sounds just like Danny. He says, mostly to remind himself, "You're dead."

The voice on the other end of the line -- the phantom voice his brain came up with -- sighs. "Yeah," it says, "sorry about that."

*beams* I take that as a great compliment.

Well, it can't really be that every immortal in the world knew one of the HL regulars, can it? No matter what the show tried to tell us?

...Yes, okay. She's probably sunbathing on a nearby beach somewhere. She and Steve would get on like a house on fire, though probably not the way people usually mean that expression.

Eh - Steve, Scmeve. I just want to see Kona meet her :)

... you are having Danny come out to the rest of team, yes? Somehow? Because otherwise, I don't even want to know you any more!

P.S.
Y'know when your started your post by talking about vampires I thought about Marsters's cameo on the show and I thought this AU was going to go into completely different direction.

See, the problem with Kono and Chin -- and why I almost (but not actually) can't blame fandom for writing them less - is that they aren't great flailing balls of flailiness. I'm honestly not sure what either of them would think of Amanda.

And yes, of course. Danny wouldn't keep his team in the dark. o.O

.....You know, that's an interesting point. Except no no no. I've already been trying to dream up a universe where Veronica Mars is on 5-0 for weeks now. Too many crossovers make one's head go boom.

IMO, Chin is mature and just slapped around by life in general enough to be mostly amused with Amanda.

Kona... Kona needs a girlfriend :)The lady is outnumbered!

Yeah, that's pretty much how I see Chin too. We'll avoid a detour into how precisely H50 parallels SGA in having characters on the main cast who are female and/or non-white, and who are awesome, and yet somehow are exactly the kind of awesome the involves standing quietly to the side while two white guys are being flashy at each other 24/7.

No, really, we'll avoid that. (And it's not all the shows' fault etc. ANYWAY.)

And absolutely on the outnumbering, too -- of course, Amanda doesn't stay in one place long enough to help with that, iirc...

Re: Veronica: yes, exactly! This is exactly what Hawaii needs after a full season of the show, after all: more crazy people.

Oh my god how is this almost midnight. I'm going to sleep before my brain stages a coup and really does try to make me write all the crossovers all the time. (Maybe you can take care of the VM one?...)

That could be fun too, though. Can't you just see it She comes across Danny, gives him the basics, starts teaching him (also - can't you just imagine the whole team filing into the dojo look at Danny being smacked around by a 100 pound valley girl with a stick? I wonder who'll think of bringing the pocorn first...

And you just know Steve will be offering a running commentary of helpful suggestion just to pay back for that basketball fiasco. Then Amanda, with her typical attention span deficit of a methed-up weasel, thinks of something shinier and skips town.

At which point Rachel and Steve freak out because any day now someone might come for Danny's head and he mastered the art of telling the difference between a knife and a sword. Almost. At then Methos and Joe show up, of course. And they live happily ever after the end.

HEE. See, I can't decide if the tutoring would be needed or not, because on the one hand the Danny in my head already has some idea of what's going on (enough to worry about decapitation and take death in some sort of stride, anyway), and on the other hand, well, no way is Danny Williams much older than he appears to be. The man doesn't exactly give off a Wise Old Man vibe.

Either way, though, I'm kind of charmed by the idea of Danny having to go through this, and how by the time Methos shows up he's been trained by his team within an inch of his life in the most bizarre mixture of sharp-object-involving fighting styles ever seen on an immortal. ("You know the nice part of you having spare lives? I don't actually have to hold back here. Learn to block or deal with buying a new shirt." "It *doesn't work that way*!")

Which might make him even more successful at blending in than others--he can give the impression he's "not that old" or doesn't seem like he's older than his years. Kind of like Kenny, except not evil and not as young when he died and stuff. ;)

That's interesting - I have trouble thinking of Danny as disguising himself, so makes me feel that it'd mean writing him as being secretly another person entirely; not just someone who's older and has a secret, but someone who can pull off the disguise. But I suppose he could in all honesty be a very immature seventy... *g*

Well, it wouldn't necessarily be a disguise--the most successful disguises/lies always have some truth, yes? You might have a different idea/interpretation, but what I was thinking is when he began living as "Daniel Williams," he may have taken a year or so to get used to the new name before doing stuff like getting a college degree and entering the police academy (assuming the NJ police requires some kind of post-baccalaureate degree), and mostly didn't have to "act" like a newbie, because in all the ways that matter, he is one.

Admittedly, I also have in my head the notion he was originally a blacksmith's son, and I'm a little reluctant to give it up. ;D

Ooh. You know, seeing as I'm less and less hopeful about continuing this ficlet, it's absolutely free to a good home... do you have some idea of his origins, or did the blacksmith detail just click randomly? (I approve either way; blacksmiths are awesome.)

The blacksmith detail was a little random--I thought Danny looked like he had the right build for it, although his arms are not as muscled as they could be. But that could be due to how old he was when he died the first time, which is why I was thinking blacksmith's son who didn't quite finish his training.

Besides, the image of a hot, sweaty Danny working hot iron on an anvil can't ever be wrong, yes? ^_-

I can't remember (or possibly never knew) if HL ever referred to it, but it makes sense that immortals would be able to lose muscle mass... either way, I like that.

And I'll admit I'm more of a, well, everyone-else-on-the-team girl as far as looks go, but your logic still can't be faulted. *g* Have I mentioned blacksmiths are awesome?

Date: 2011-01-14 09:23 pm (UTC)
ymfaery: (shigure watching)
From: [personal profile] ymfaery
That would make sense, especially if Danny simply didn't have time to do much blacksmith work while he was a cop in NJ. And if they can lose muscle mass, they can also build it back up. =Db

Blacksmiths are way awesome! Though I admit I recently read a fanfic with Sunda Kastagir, and I couldn't resist the idea that Danny was his apprentice for a while. (Not sure Sunda was his first teacher though, since I'm not sure where/what time period Danny grew up and whether Sunda would have been around.)

And honestly, I don't know if I'll actually write anything. I have quite a few ideas that haven't gone beyond the "how would that work?" stage.

You know, when I made that joke, I wasn't expecting you to go out and write an amazing H50 AU where Danny is an immortal. Oh my God, I love this like a loving thing! AND THEN THAT LAST PARAGRAPH. With Danny bitching about Steve getting him shot again after everyone saw him dead. *flails*

I can't imagine Danny not telling Rachel, not least because that's the only way to be mostly-sure Grace will never be told he's dead. Which is somehow a really neat thing between them in my head, them going at each other all that time but her still keeping this safe for him.

I sat here trying to figure out what Danny could possibly say and what could possibly be un-sentimental enough for him, and then realized it was absolutely obvious. *g*

I'm so happy with the whole Rachel scene because you summed up their relationship so perfectly with just that bit: the love and the worry and trust, and even when they didn't work, she still keeps this part safe for him. And now Steve is the next one in Danny's life to know about this, which is just lovely.

Good questions, those! I don't have good answers so much as speculations, though.

Grace - I basically spared half a second to this when I remembered immortals can't have children, then realized it didn't really matter. Whether she's adopted or from a past relationship, I can't really imagine it meaning anything to Danny; she's his daughter, full stop.

Sword - For a while there, clearly he using a sword cane. *g* In general, though, there's either the explanation I always liked about HL, where they all keep their swords in tiny mobile interdimensional pockets; Or more seriously, it's entirely possible he doesn't actually know the whole deal about immortals yet (and somehow got only half the story). Because:

Biography - I don't have it in me to believe Danny's that much older than he looks, or has a much different history than he appears to. He's so... himself. And so much not really a Wise Old Man.

If you have any thoughts about this, I'd be happy to hear them! I have no idea if I'll manage to write more of this or if it'll stay a ficlet, but it's mostly a neat suggestion-of-a-universe in my head at this point.
