I hope you have fun with your assignment. Please don't feel constrained by my optional details; even the dislikes don't count as hard limits, just stuff I'm not really in the mood for. I definitely sway more towards the 'feels' side of fic, and I'm very easily persuaded. Oh, and yuleporn is most welcome!

Hi, yuletide writer!

I hope you have a fun, stress-free time with your story. Optional details honestly are optional. If there's something you've been dying to write, I really hope you go with your instincts instead of fretting about my likes and dislikes.

If you are fretting: any rating's fine by me, and I don't really have any squicks to speak of. I'm definitely more about characters/relationships/feels over complicated plots, but don't let that stop you if you've a story to spin. If I've requested more than one character then I'm definitely shippishly-inclined, even if they're related, underage, undead, etc. Overprotective fixation, unhealthy co-dependence, devotion, ardour - these things are ficnip to me. (Gravity's the sole exception to my shippishness, since I kinda love that we weren't force-fed a Hollywood romance.) The only narrative tropes that would bring my Yuletide down would be character death or relentless depression or cheating/betrayal (unless included in the canon itself - and I am all about the fix-it fics).

Hum. I think I promised not to enter Merlin Holidays again after buggerising the mods around last year, but it looks like there are new mods this time around so they will be blissfully unaware of my penchant for procrastination.

Also! [livejournal.com profile] yuletide nominations close soon. (In case anyone has a free nom slot for Hoarders!)

Look.Stop.Shop, literary fan fiction readings at City Basement Books

Literary fan fiction is the sacred act of your favourite book being re-written by the mind of a brilliant, twisted pop-culture junkie who just doesn’t know when to quit. It's a beautiful, well-cultivated playground where smut and high-brow culture hang out and talk shit like old childhood friends. If you aren't someone who has ever indulged in something like this, it can be a fascinating but understandably intimidating subculture to delve into. For three Saturdays this July, leave any skepticism at home and weigh up these staggering geniuses in person as they read their works at City Basement Books – all over hot tea and biscuits.

I'm not certain who wrote the above but don't be scared; this is intended to be a friendly series of Saturday afternoons for fanfiction readers and writers to get together and talk fic, books & fandom. All welcome (the dates are July 6, 12 and 20, 2.30pm) and let me know if you'd like to do a reading -- the emphasis will be on book-inspired fic. Because BOOKS ♥♥♥

Melbourne people, don't forget the book launch of [livejournal.com profile] freece's Captive Prince at Hares & Hyenas on Friday night at 7pm.

I have not actually read Captive Prince, but I hear enthusiastic things. Also, the name Supacat reminds me of a time back in the dim dark 90s when I tripped merrily into my very first slash ship, Chakotay/Paris. Bloody good times.

[livejournal.com profile] merlin_holidays reveals are now up. I got 10/10 on the guessing poll (admittedly mostly the artists and the one vidder!) and correctly picked [livejournal.com profile] corilannam as the writer of my wonderful gift The Pact. Thank you so much, Cori Lannam!

I too wrote a modern Prince of Wales AU and spent many delicious hours researching royalty books, docos, newspaper articles and magazines, channelling my inner monarchist (so weird, I know, I'm such a lefty in every other way). Hello, Yuletide writer!

Hopefully my requests haven't horrified you. (If you're not here about The Human Centipede then you might be a little concerned right now, but it really is a great little movie complete with skin-crawling body horror, the maddest of mad scientists and an awesome Last Girl.)

I don't really have squicks you need to steer clear of. The theme of infidelity/partner betrayal is the only thing I sometimes find uncomfortable to read. Oh, and I get a bit embarrassed when characters are made fools of, even villains.

Tone-wise, I usually prefer fairly straightforward fic with a happy or at least hopeful or satisfying ending. That might not necessarily mesh with some of these fandoms (Channel 4, why do you have to cancel my favourite show, WHY? Fuyumi Ono, did you really have to leave off writing there?) but fix-it fic or wish-fulfilment is always a winner with me. I love all the typical fic tropes, cliches and crack, and I love them best when they're written in dead earnest.

Style-wise, you don't need to do anything too ambitious to please me. (But definitely go for it if you're feeling inspired! Some of these fandoms might lend themselves fairly well to a different approach: behind the scenes interviews with Team members, newspaper articles about Lindsay's ordeal, intelligence reports sent back to Eurote, etc.) If you're writing something shippy, then feel free to go full-bore; I'm a long-time romance fan and can consume endless amounts of id-filled prose. If you're writing something gen, I'm all about the characters: their relationships, backstories and tremendous feelings as opposed to complicated plot points. Angst, pining, hurt/comfort all fill me with delight.

Mostly, I'd just like you to have a good time writing, with as little stress as possible. If the prompts aren't talking to you, ignore them and write to your own strengths and interests. I'm very persuadable, I promise.

Oh! and there's no order of request preference; this is just the order they showed up on the tagset.

For the curious: Hyakujitsu no Bara|Maiden Rose, Juuni Kokki|Twelve Kingdoms, Time Team RPF, The Human Centipede )

Haven't updated in so long /o\

I'm currently housesitting a home with a bigass TV and pretty much unlimited download, which is ideal for absorbing maximum [livejournal.com profile] vividcon output. Mind you, looking at the spreadsheets, I've barely seen sweet FA. Oh well! The more geriatric I get, the more I just sit back and enjoy the pretty. It's not as if I'm getting any better at understanding lyrics, much less layers. (Case in mishearing point: numerous re-watchings of The Adventure (Harry Potter) had me wondering if the vid was trying to suggest that Harry is like Judas, and also, could I possibly be the last person to know that Tom DeLonge left Blink-182?)

I love shippy vids best and pretty vids next, so naturally What Makes You Beautiful (Merlin) made for jolly viewing (and almost made me forget that I'm actually almost kinda dreading the horrors S5 might bring, no matter how sumptuous Mr Morgan may be). Other than that I think the strongest ship feels I felt came from Music Again (Karate Kid). Mr Miyagi/Daniel <3

My happy shiny (new to me) favourites from Club Vivid were Wrong In All The Right Ways (Duran Duran) - adventures in 80s fandom, A Different Kind of Love Song (Multifandom), Titanium (Multifandom), Fire In Your New Shoes (The Prisoner) - *so* good, and I can say "I bin there!", Ride to California (Avengers) and Heads Will Roll (Game of Thrones) - mmm, gore.

Premieres had goodies too. The multifandom Hunger Games intro was great and I loved both Harry Potter vids: The Adventure (Neville <3) and Non Plaustra Vade (Everyone <333) - they both gave me that exultant WHEEE feeling. Someone could probably do a How You Remind Me of Someday mash-up of Raise Your Hand (Avengers) and Carry On (Captain America) - I swear the choruses are exactly the same. Masters of War (SGA) was excellent if discomforting viewing, although to me it was the most egregious example of not-ending-your-vid-right (ymmv). The Thorki multifandom metafest was also a gem. I'm still mulling on We Didn't Start the Fire (Multifandom) since it didn't speak to me the way it clearly did for a bunch of other people. I do tend to associate the song with the Trek vids they'd air at StarFest back in the 90s ("25 years of Star Trek...") Since I'm way too literal in my vid-viewing, I probably would've liked it better had the vid stuck to the song's chronological order and covered the 40 year period BJ sings about. Instead it felt all awry to me both time-wise and fandom-wise, and it was almost as if too much thought had gone into dreaming up lyric matches - some were dead obvious, some were a bit icky and some were too obscure for my feeble brain. It just wasn't gelling for me.

And there were Vids That Go Bump In The Night! Thud went my horror-loving heart! The Tragic Tale of Cesare (The Cabinet of Dr Caligari), 666 (The Omen) and Raspberry Swirl (Suspiria) all looked and sounded amazing.

And in non-Vividcon but vital vidding news, [personal profile] soup made Girl on Fire (The Hunger Games) to express Katniss' glory, since the movie came too late for Glorious. This weekend when she comes over, I'll make her do a Hoarders vid to Carmina Burana.

***

Maybe I'll put on Unstoppable tonight in honour of Tony Scott.
