The Raunch Hands "PayDay!" 1989

Cartoonist Daniel Clowes steals the show here with his artwork, including not only the cover but a nifty label on the same theme. The first of this group's series of records on the Crypt label doesn't quite have the impact of its debut album, and a shifting of the musical lineup may have been part of the problem…Image..There is a different drummer, and the change was perhaps not for the best. Saxophone also becomes more prominent, confining the group's roots rock experiments more to the R&B side of the lab and reducing the rockabilly and honky tonk element somewhat. It is also simply just not as good a band with the departure of Mike Tchang, who had also helped write some of the Raunch Hands' material. The stalwart Raunch Hands that go simply by the names of Chandler and Mariconda provide the main directions, coming up with some of their typically kooky and ingratiating material such as the hopping "Hare-Raisin'," the proud "I'm a Swinger," and "I Can't Hear a Thing," which, along with "Make It Stop," were perhaps written in the aftermath of a Raunch Hands soundcheck. There are also some nice cover versions, including "I Live for the Sun," the type of album track that closes out a side and seems to hypnotically command the listener to immediately flip the record over. - by Eugene ChadbourneImagetrax:

The Kilaueas & Surfer Joe "Play the Astronauts & More" 2016

So, what is the idea behind this album? And who are The Astronauts?..Image...Nearly everyone who is interested in surf music listens to The Astronauts songs. In 1963 The Astronauts were produced by RCA, in the middle of the surf era, and they collaborated with famous Lee Hazlewood who also composed some legendary surf songs, like Baja, The Hearse and Surf’s You Right.
But why there has never been an “Astronauts tribute album” or something similar? Today a lot of bands still have Astronauts’ songs in their set, but nobody has worked on a more complete “Astronauts project”. We have all the weapons we need: Fender Showman Amps, Reverb tanks, Jazzmaster and Jaguar guitars!
Lorenzo “Surfer Joe” Valdambrini, the International Surf Music Ambassador, is a well known musician in the modern surf scene, constantly on tour worldwide with his band spreading out the sound of traditional surf music. Lorenzo is also the co-producer of the Surfer Joe Summer Festival, today’s biggest surf music event.
The Kilaueas are a German band from Berlin active since 1998 dedicated to the traditional surf sound and acclaimed as one of the best surf combos for their compositions and their amazing live performances.
Since 2011 Lorenzo has played drums on some tours with the Kilaueas and they had the idea to do a tribute album to the Astronauts. In a few shows, where also Alex Faide (Los Twang Marvels) was added on third guitar, the extended Kilaueas played a long set of Astronauts’ tunes. The audience liked it a lot as it was really featuring that particular kind of sound impact!
The time has come to turn that idea into reality: with this album we want to honor The Astronauts for their great work and unforgettable surf sound! - Ralf Kilauea & Lorenzo Valdambrini, May 2016 Imagetrax:

The Screaming Blue Messiahs "Bikini Red" 1987

Decibel-Powered Defibrillator!ImageThe Messiahs' sophomore record reveals no slump after their outstanding premier on Gun-Shy. This is a straight-ahead, pile-driven storm, full of power, emotion, and wit, with a menacing rockabilly tone powered by vigorous bass and taut drumming. Bill Carter, a bald, sun-glasses-wearing full moon of guitar madness played with fervor and abandon, but his layered rhythms and loopy solos are sweet music to my ears.
The CD starts up like a chainsaw, ready to rip and slash, as Sweet Water Pools threatens to overpower the woofers. The delightfully politically incorrect I Can Speak American would not be out of place blaring from American tanks rumbling across the Iraqi deserts on their way to Baghdad. Big Brother Muscle and the wonderfully titled Jesus Chrysler Drives a Dodge are full of those wonderful blistering riffs that distinguished this great, lost band. The SBM's one hit, if you want to call it that, I Wanna Be a Flintstone, is wonderfully deranged and zany.
Bill Carter wrote and played like a man whose liver was being gnawed by wolverines. His lyrical obsessions reveal a kindred spirit to the Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson, and they share some of the same confrontational themes: guns, fast cars, outlaws, loathing, alcohol, fast living. Sometimes I wonder what siren call or twisted muse egged Mr. Carter on and triggered these outbursts (and how I might invoke that muse). I also wonder what happened to him following the band's disintegration. (Chris Thompson and Kenny Harris, his erstwhile sidekicks, recently resurfaced in the Killer B's along with Tony Moon, who was cowrote several SBM songs and was in a band called Motor Boys Motor along with Carter and Thompson. Thompson, who played bass in SMB, has switched to lead. Still no sign of Bill Carter, though.)
The production quality is terrific, especially considering all the Screaming Blue Messiahs' output took place during the mid- to -late '80s, not exactly an era known for rendering much in the way of truly memorable music. This CD, the ultra rare "Gun Shy," and the slightly less intense "Totally Religious" are all gems and worth the treasure hunt. When your rock 'n roll soul needs to be revived, this music makes a superb defibrillator. Reviewer: loce_the_wizard "loce_the_wizard" (Lilburn, GA USA)ImageThe Screaming Blue Messiahs:

The Kilaueas "Wiki Waki Woooo" 2014

Spies, bikinis, rock n roll: the return of the Berlin surf legend!ImageThe Kilaueas took nine years to succeed their 2005 album "Profesor Volcanova". Time in which they made countless appearances at home and abroad, time in which they themselves became a legend of the surf scene. "Wiki Waki Woooo" is an album with instrumental surf music at the highest level. The 16 original compositions show all facets of the current surf rock. From the high-speed staccato fretboard scrubber "Surf Demon" to Russian folklore ("Planet Olga") to the Italo-Western ("The Tremolo Gear Butt"). From the Vatican to Baghdad to the Arctic, whether spies, bikinis, spaceships "the four men from the Hawaiian volcano play with the rock-and-roll clichés just as joyfully as with their instruments.Imagetrax:

Sidney Bechet "Petite Fleur" 2004

"Petite Fleur" is an instrumental written by Sidney Bechet and recorded by him in January 1952, first with the Sidney Bechet All Stars and later with Claude Luter and his Orchestra...Image…In 1959 it was an international hit as a clarinet solo by Monty Sunshine with Chris Barber's Jazz Band. This recording peaked at No. 5 on the US Hot 100 and No. 4 in the UK charts. Their version was in A♭ minor, in contrast to Bechet's, which was in G minor. There was also another recording by Bob Crosby and the Bobcats. Following the Chris Barber instrumental recording, lyrics were added by Fernand Bonifay and Mario Bua in the same year. A different set of lyrics was written by Paddy Roberts and the song was recorded by Teddy Johnson and Pearl Carr in 1959. Petula Clark recorded the song in French and it was included in her album Hello Paris (1962).

The Kilaueas & Surfpatrouille "Magmanautic Inferno" + "Venus Pussy Polka Riot" (Split 2) 2007

Surfpatrouille are from Germany. Their brand of instrumental music is more spy than surf in style, but definitely reverb soaked heavy modern tone and real twang. Lots of fire, mostly on the fast side, and plenty of imagination. This official album release appears as a two-fer with the Kilaueas on Kamikaze Records. - phil dirtImageSurfpatrouille trax:

Eight Living Legs "False Sense of Security" - Compilation ed. 2005

...The Emigration EP didn't do the band justice, and it's great having the opportunity to hear tracks from the time re-EQ'd. (The Legs' humour is all over Emigration's liner note; gems include "All fan mail send to Big Rock Stars Ltd, FreePost (no stamp required), Private Bag 000, Auck", "Contains no fast songs, 'yeah mans', lead breaks or pop star drum beats" and some pseudo-classical music notes.)
But it wasn't the end of the band. Robert had added piano, violin and God knows what other instruments to his repertoire over the years, Bryn had taught himself sax and Huw could handle guitar and bass, too. A couple of gigs in London were not encouraging - in those days, unless you had a British press wanker gushing over you or a very sharp manager, you literally paid to play in a London venue, and there was no hope of getting the money back when you couldn't afford the publicity to get punters there…Image...Bryn was working, Huw was working, Robert was experiencing London life, living in a squat pretty dire by any standards. Bryn drifted away from the band, having other responsibilities, and James Murray, Roberts' cousin, who had also moved to London, took up guitar. James had been drummer in the Auckland band Exploding Budgies, also the starting point for David Mitchell of the 3Ds.
A gig or two followed. The new line-up did some pretty good recordings in the London studio where they practised, but gigging seemed virtually impossible.
We heard all about this, and resolved to do something.
The Dutch scene couldn't have been more different. No Maggie Thatcher, a rich history of plundering Asian spices, a very healthy portfolio of US investments and a liberal, left-wing government that supported the arts meant that bands got paid for gigs even with minimal audiences. Besides, Dutch bands actually helped each other. So we organised a five-gig tour for them, Amsterdam, Wageningen, Eindhoven ... We hired a van. We (now called If; Dieneke, me, Dutch guy Rob Bleuzé on drums) played with them at two of the gigs while Svätsox and/or Naadafinksa did the others. Dieneke played violin with them on a couple of songs.
This was a new Eight Living Legs. Without the staunch, electric-blues-rooted artistry of Bryn Driver to anchor them, the stage presence had become almost demonic. With their faces daubed in red paint and James cranking feedback out of his guitar, joining the feedback loop aurally sometimes by singing into his Rickenbacker's sound-holes, the Dutch audiences were shocked, excited, mystified and bewildered in equal measure. The Legs were on fire.
But that was it, really. After that, the band drifted apart in the stultifying London atmosphere.
Robert went on to do a few recordings with other people, writing increasingly introspective songs, and even performed a few times. Huw worked in many bands over the years, both during and after the Legs era, always just under the cusp of making it as a serious musician. James ended up moving to Amsterdam where he still lives, working as a lighting technician of some repute, well grounded in the music industry. Bryn, ever the working man, was the first to move back to New Zealand permanently - he still plays in pub bands occasionally, and is working on creative projects.
Huw is now back here too, writing music, still a consummate drummer but also playing bass, working as a mechanic with a special interest in American cars.
Robert is still in London but is, for probably the first time, seriously considering moving back to New Zealand after 20 years. He signs his emails 'RD Carey: Mycologist, Primitive Technologist and Misanthropist' - but this isn't as tongue-in-cheek as it sounds - he has many other strings to his bow, having taught maths to immigrants, designed textiles, worked for a photographer, cleaned a gay bar and paraded as a transvestite, among other things.
After all is said and done, I think Eight Living Legs was a band that should have made it. Perhaps if they'd been a bit more savvy about the move to London, laying some groundwork first, things would have been different. Like many a promising band, maybe they just needed to 'be discovered'. They probably deserved it more than most of the New Zealand bands of the early '80s - they were engaging, consummate musicians, tight as all hell, professional yet with a quirky, stroppy humour that came across live.
In person, a night with the Legs was always a side-splitting occasion. Wit and intelligence coincide - sometimes they collide. Any two of the band in the same room for any length of time - even now - makes for a bloody entertaining and rewarding night.
Perhaps what let them down was no one outside the band having enough faith or vision to see them for what they were. Perhaps it was the personal insecurities of the individual members undermining their musical endeavours. Probably it was just supremely bad luck - but if you never saw or heard Eight Living Legs, you missed out. End of story. - Mark Webster, February 2008Imagetrax:

Batman & Robin "My Hero-Power Is My Moustache!" EP 2009

The final chapter in the trilogy. How will I go on living without more Batman & Robin records to look forward to? I guess I have the three that they blessed us with, and when I get tired of those... at least beer is cheap…Image...So this is more fun garage rock slop from these crimefighters. Brain damage on seven inches of black plastic. If you like the other two records, you'll like this. The supplementary contents of this release don't top the gut-busting Gotham Gazelle insert in the last 7", but this is still very nice. It comes with a two-sided poster that a) I am not going to hang up on my wall and b) is too big to just stuff inside the sleeve. So I guess I'll keep it in one of my 7" record boxes, folded in half along the side where it will remind me of Batman and Robin's legacy, as well as Robin's fetish for wearing panties, every goddamn time I flip through my singles. "Goodbye, Batman and Robin", I say, wiping away a tear. - JasonHernandezImagetrax:

The Kilaueas & Surfpatrouille "Magmanautic Inferno" + "Venus Pussy Polka Riot" (Split 1) 2007

The Kilaueas offer up garagie sound and interesting writing. While a trio, the arrangements are full, except that the bass often follows the lead too closely instead of countering. The infectious nature of the playing, and the burning fire in the musicians' guts, combined with no shortage of reverb, makes for a thrashy surf ride. - phil dirtImageThe Kilaueas trax:

Eight Living Legs "Emigration" EP 1983

Eight Living Legs first appeared in the Auckland alternative scene in about 1981, but it wasn't the first time they'd played music together. In fact, in many respects they were already seasoned musicians, having been playing instruments through high school, even in various semi-professional capacities...Image…Drummer Huw Dainow, guitarist Bryn Driver and bass player Robert Carey lived in Te Atatu South (in West Auckland) and were schoolmates. I first saw them play after our guitarist, Dieneke Jansen, met Robert at university. Huw was always tinkering with cars and often found work as a mechanic (he became fully qualified later) and Bryn worked in prepress, as he still does, with some time out as an architectural draftsman. Where our band (Flak) had musical influences and expectations way ahead of our abilities, the Legs had musical confidence to burn. On stage Huw would feel his way around the kit, playing incredibly tight rhythms with a tactility and feel way beyond most drummers of his age, while a grimacing Bryn would stand as if anchored to the deck of a heaving ship, legs braced, body swaying as he sent out blistering bluesy licks at breakneck speed or harnessed feedback to power chords. Robert, imposing, almost gaunt, would pace restlessly, sweeping the air dangerously with the long neck of his Fender. Robert did most of the singing, voice gruff or pleading, sometimes wailing. His voice had a good range. On stage the band had presence, some songs that could-have-been should-have-been hits, and crowds loved 'em. I always enjoyed an Eight Living Legs concert - lots of people did. We often shared gigs - the Hunters and Collectors' support and playing before the Dead Kennedys were highlights. By a strange coincidence, the trio were all left-handed, just as we were (three-piece, left-handed). In a review published in Rip It Up (June 6th 1983) Russell Brown wrote "Eight Living Legs' confidence meant they succeeded where Flak didn't quite" and this is an accurate summation. Russell also wrote of Legs "They were hard, angry, played with space well." was the Auckland heyday of the Legs, and that's when we talked Flying Nun into doing a dual EP - the support of Chris Knox was a big factor in FN's agreement, I'm sure. We were all planning on heading overseas so we decided on three songs a side and called it 'Emigration'. The recordings clearly showed our lack of experience in the studio. Recordings were horrendously expensive in those days and you often ended up with a technician who knew nothing about the genre. And cared less. With the meter ticking, you said yes to stuff that was decidedly second rate, or went with the advice that it could be fixed in the mix - which you then couldn't afford. Flying Nun, with their habitual inattention to detail and general all-round disorganisation in those days, dragged their feet so much the vinyl didn't come out for over a year. By then, Eight Living Legs were in London and Dieneke and I had moved to Amsterdam. The Legs came to see us in our flat there - on listening to tapes we realised how awful the recordings were and how decidedly irrelevant the whole exercise was, so we co-wrote a letter saying 'please stop the record!' and sent it off. On another visit, months later, we went out shopping for music - Amsterdam in those days housed John Peel's favourite record shops. We found our disc in the Imports bin, complete with premium price. 'Dismay' doesn't quite do the emotion justice. Apart from the fact we thought the record should never have been released and had made that clear to Flying Nun, they'd left a colour off the sleeve and an entire track off the Flak side. Even Eight Living Legs' material sounded thin and anaemic - as (now renowned) Dutch musician Ferry Heyne said at the time, "It sounds like it was recorded in a matchbox"!.. to be continued…Imagetrax:

"Santa's Funk & Soul Christmas Party" Vol. 1, 2 & 3

One of the coolest Christmas compilations we've seen in years – a package that's filled with rare funk and soul singles from the 60s and 70s – all of which have a Holiday theme! Almost all the tunes on the set are original numbers – which means that the songs are totally fresh, and not just reworked versions of Christmas standards – and all the tracks come from tiny independent labels, which means there's an extra gritty edge to the whole thing – hardly the sort of sleepy Christmas record you might know from your youth! The funky 45 label Tramp put the whole thing together, with the same energy they usually bring to 7" vinyl – and titles include "Black Christmas" by Rose Graham, "Christmas Day" by Detroit Jr, "You Won't Have To Wait Till Xmas" by Lee Rogers, "Santa's Got A Brand New Bag" by Gary Walker, "Holiday Baby" by Fat Daddy, "Xmas Done Got Funky" by Jimmy Jules & The Nuclear Sound System, "Christmas Groove" by Vernon Garrett, "Soul Christmas" by Count Sidney & His Dukes, and "Stone Soul Christmas" by Binky Griptite.  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.Imagetrax vol 1:

The Kilaueas "Live at the Tiki" San Diego 8-31-2006

Reverb Drenched Magmaphonic High Energy Instrumental Surf Music from Berlin, Germany!ImageCool Euro-style surf rock similar to The Atlantics, Space Cossacks and Satan's Pilgrims.
The Kilaueas are among the purest-sounding surf bands of today. There's great reverb, picking and whammy bar action all throughout, the songs being very light and relaxed, sometimes slightly jazzy; and it's the slower numbers I found especially attractive. If you're into traditional surf: don't miss! - StyroporbrettschnitzerImagetrax:

Buzzcocks "A Different Kind Of Tension" 1979 [2008 Deluxe Edition] - disc 2

I almost forgot what a great album this is. This is definitive pop punk, sweaty and hard rocking. I call it happy punk, which is a relative term. Though full of angst and confusion of the times The Buzzcocks were not one of those F*-this and F*-that nihilistic type of punk bands. You pogo dance to it, you don't slam dance. This could possible be one of the 10 best albums of all time. - By "jeffb47"ImageUsually a band's last album before its members part ways is considered their weakest. That's not the case here: "A Different Kind of Tension" is in my view their best effort by far, even better than their otherwise outstanding and frequently lauded "Singles Going Steady." The album's twelve tracks are an outstanding mix of post-punk standards, like "Mad, Mad Judy," "You Say You Don't Love Me" and "I Don't Know What to do with My Life," and more experimental songs like "Money," "Hollow Inside" and "I Believe" - the type of songs which often earned the Buzzcocks the misleading classification as an `art-rock' group. It's great to listen to it on something other than the overplayed and now-grainy cassette I used before. - By Edward Bosnar

The Kilaueas "Las Excentricas Aventuras Del Profesor Volcanova" 2005

This is the second album from the Kilaueas. It displays a big step forward. Well developed songs with a very attractive sound, consistently performed in very strong arrangements. There's lots here for the surf fan, particularly is you're a sucker for the damped reverbed rhythm, like me. If you like the Bambi Molesters, Jim Messina and the Jesters, and the Surf Raiders, you'll like this CD.
- http://www.surfkraft.net/cd-tipp-kilaueas-profesor-volcanova/Imagetrax:
