It's not my birthday, but today I reached the Full Retirement Age for an American born in 1959. Congrats to me, or something.

Today has been the first "Julia Gotcha Day" since my kitty passed away. Nick and I brought Julia home on July 14, 2009.

And today two of my longest-term friends became grandparents!!! Their firstborn daughter, whom I held in my arms when she was a tiny baby 35 years ago, is now a mother of a daughter herself!!! I'm so happy for the whole family!!!

I've been not exactly pleased with the glow effect on the carved teeth I did in my leather mask for my Tainted character for Dystopia Rising. I've been giving thought to how to get a better concentration of glow in the carved lines, and if I can find the LIT powder, my process should be pretty good here. I got one of the precision glue bottles with the three tips, and I've used the very fine tips to lay a line of paint down in the lines, and it's helping a lot.

Now if I can find the powder to make it even MORE glow, I'll be happy. Fortunately it all dries clear.

Birthday week! Honestly, overall it's been really great! The birthday itself was Friday, and I skipped school to hang all day with Mads, so we went to the Heritage Museum of Asian Art in Bridgeport, which I mostly know as the home of the Mayors Daley. It was AMAZING, and so full of Little Guys! I was hoping to maybe do a double feature with the National Museum of Mexican Art, but we found ourselves in Chinatown for a late dum sum lunch, the kpop store KPOP, bubble tea and then my favorite of all the Chinese bakeries, where a large extended family of very excited Midwestern tourists tumbled in, asked me what was good and then all sang me "Happy Birthday." Even the famously stern bakery counter lady smiled and wished me a happy birthday.

Yesterday was a delightful multiple hit with acupuncture from my hilarious Dr. Rev (ironically, if you read that as "reverend" and not "Revital"), a Greek festival at a church in Edgewater (where we met some lizards and snakes too! we being S, Qinzi and her friend), eating near Hollywood Beach, then me MEETING THISTLE (a cat!) who is so stubby and fluffy and gray. Once I was home after recovering from a little too much sun, [personal profile] theladyscribe and I watched Good News on Netflix, which is a fantastically funny/satirical Wag the Dog/Death of Stalin-style account of, well, some Japanese Red Army hijackers demanding to be flown to Pyongyang. Highly highly recommend, it was actually so exciting to watch a film that does good stuff with the medium again!

The one... the one downside, honestly, has been that on Monday, I thought I sat funny and suddenly my lower back and hips were just UNRELENTING. Then it shot down my left leg, and when I complained about it to my doggy day camp guy, he was like, lol, oh, that's sciatica! SCIATICA. Are you for real?? The thing that every middle-aged background character actress in every sitcom growing up complained about? I do have some roll-on pain reliever now, which I plan to try in a bit, so hopefully I can get going with biking to work or at least playing softball again, but yikes!

The funniest thing, however, happened at work on Tuesday. I was hustling to the office, having grabbed a shirt I like off the floor and kind of praying that it didn't actually smell or anything; we have a daily meeting at 10, so at 9:56 or so, I swiped myself inside the lobby. Two guys in wheelchairs were utterly blocking the way, obviously chatting about something, but the elevator was starting to close, so I kinda slipped past them and made it on.

Two other guys were in there, neither of whom I'd seen before — one looking quite young, but he could have been an intern, our interns had just started. The other guy was lanky, a little taller than me, had a bit of scraggly beard, and I was certain I recognized him from something but I knew it was super rude to stare. Finally, he says (paraphrased), "Wow, I never thought that people in wheelchairs would like, trade specs on their wheelchairs like that." You know, like cars or computers or something. My first thought is Do you not have any disabled friends?

My second thought is Oh my god, it is John Mulaney!

Of course, I still had to hurry to my stupid meeting, so once the doors opened, I turned to him and apologized for running off, but (staying chill) I continued, "You are a very funny man."

"Thank you so much!" he said, so earnestly and politely and cheerfully. Well! What a week! ✶

I am learning the woodwinds

I have acquired a clarinet and as of today, I know the fingering for five notes (C, D, E, F, and G), and only squeaked a couple of times while figuring out the register key (which pops it up an octave). Fortunately music reading is music reading, so my ability to read music for a clarinet is just like reading music for a guitar is just like reading music for a trumpet is just like reading music for a hymn.

I wonder how some of the hymns are for a clarinet?

It is a red clarinet, and I am rather excited to get to play more on it, but I am also having to remind myself that learning is no more than an hour a day because my mouth muscles get tired.

I'm hoping that the delivery tomorrow of the new dressers from Ikea don't come in the middle of my assigned practice time. I almost started looking up my Uncle's phone number on the internet to call him up and ask, "UNCLE ANDREW WHY WILL THE CLARINET NOT MAKE NOISE???" and I shifted my chin and then it made noise! I have to relax my face a lot more than I did playing trumpet.

i used to pay some attention to july 4th because i like fireworks (in a controlled setting done by professionals), but that urge died years ago. so have a post instead.

1. happy birthday to my older sister, who i will be seeing not today because nobody in my family wants to leave the house. but i’ll see her soon.

2. dan and phil have a tradition of posting a pizza mukbang at different eras of their life, and they posted their third one today. their first one was difficult because it was right after the interactive introverts tour/right before dan’s giant hiatus. the second one, as the intro to the terrible influence era, was so much better, but this third one might be the best yet? it’s bridging their initial hard launch era with their impending hard launch tour, and they’re very chill about things generally

but the thing that’s really worth mentioning is that phil casually dropped that, not only was the “the whiskers are smudged in pinof 1 because they smooched” theory so beloved by phandom correct, he had footage? that he put on his youtube channel? unlisted??? more context. )

3. and if that wasn’t enough, my chemical romance played a song in glasgow that they’ve never played live before! literally right after the mukbang went up! the song was ambulance and it comes from the conventional weapons singles, which is the fragments of the pre-danger days abandoned album they shared right before they broke up after danger days. (there’s also a post-danger days abandoned album called paper kingdom, which is where war beneath the rain comes from.)

my chemical romance emotions. )

4. the kitchen has the beginning of an ant infestation, so i’m going to clean while i listen to my chemical romance. bye for now.
