Prologue

Seto Kaiba groaned as he woke up, wincing as his head pounded. He took a deep breath as he kept his eyes closed and tried to gather his thoughts. Surely, he thought, he should not have a hangover as he'd only intended to have a couple of small drinks in the hotel's bar. But something had obviously gone wrong and his memory of anything after leaving the bar last night was a complete blank.

He sighed as he turned over, then he started as he realised that he was not alone in his hotel bed. His eyes flew open in shock and he stared at the other figure in the bed. She was facing away from him with her long brown hair spread over her face and the pillow. Just what had happened last night?

He took a deep breath and slowly, carefully, got out of bed, making sure that he did not wake her. He dressed and packed the few things he had out in silence, wondering that the woman had the audacity to bring her own case into his room. He would have investigated, but his attention was diverted from the mystery as he spotted the condom on the floor next to a couple of tissues. How disgusting that it had not been disposed of properly, but he thanked whichever deity may be listening that he had retained enough sense to actually use one!

He grimaced as he got a few more tissues and picked the offending items up, placing them in a plastic bag near the top of his suitcase for easy disposal at the first available opportunity. He did not want to leave any of his DNA evidence so easily accessible in case this was some kind of sting. Of course, he knew that there would be some DNA evidence on the sheets, but he would just have to trust that the hotel staff would come in, do their jobs properly, and clean everything up.

Packed and dressed (he forewent the bathroom for now, knowing there was one attached to the lobby that he would be able to use in a pinch) he quietly left the room, thanking heavens that the woman in the bed had not woken up. It wasn't that he was a coward, far from it, it was just that his head was still pounding and he did not want some kind of ugly scene because he could not remember anything from the previous evening. At that moment it did not matter that she could have potentially taken advantage of him last night, he just wanted to leave. If there were any problems he could deal with them later. It wasn't a very Kaiba thing to do, but the hangover he was experiencing was very distracting and would put him at a disadvantage.

And the sad thing was that he really could not remember anything from the last several hours. It was a closely guarded secret that Seto Kaiba had this awful intolerance to alcohol, something that Gozaburo Kaiba had discovered early and with some disgust, as being able to hold your drink was a weapon in the arsenal of a businessman.

It had quickly been ascertained that a few small drinks were fine, but that would lower his inhibitions so that he was susceptible to being influenced into drinking more. Then if he did, his carefully crafted mask went out of the window and as an added bonus he would not be able to remember a thing. Gozaburo, damn the man, had spent months trying to build up his tolerance with little success, at one point forcing him to drink so much that later he'd been told that he had almost died. Fortunately he didn't remember that. Well, he did remember some of the awful recovery, but even that was muted as the alcohol had still been affecting his system at the time.

After that incident Gozaburo had given up on trying to increase his tolerance and had taken a different tack instead, but it had still taken a long time and a lot of discipline, self and otherwise, to be able to live with this... 'affliction'.

He had indeed gone to the hotel bar last night with the intention of getting a couple of small drinks with his 'colleagues', which he always did to show that he could be social and to foster 'good feeling', but that first small drink had seemed to last rather a long time. In fact the only way it could have lasted so long would be if someone were refilling it when he wasn't looking.

Once he had realised this and the danger he was in, he'd quickly made his excuses and had made to head back to his room. Something had obviously happened after that, but he could not remember as everything was a blank. He had a very vague memory of being waylaid by something to do with a woman with long brown hair, most likely the one that was sleeping in the bed, but he could not recall anything else no matter how he tried.

No matter, it was done with now. He left the room then called his car, caught the lift down to the lobby and made quick use of the bathroom facilities there, disposing of the condom and tissues as he did so. Then he checked out, left the building and got into the waiting car. He would be flying out of the city shortly and with whatever had happened last night, the sooner he left the better!

Of course, it wasn't until much later, after drinking much water to re-hydrate and taking ibuprofen to help his headache, that he considered that he really should have taken the time to look at the face of the woman who had been in his bed. But even those early morning memories were fading thanks to the effect of the remaining alcohol in his system and by that evening those thoughts had passed, along with his hangover, into the back of his mind as he continued on with his daily business.

The upcoming tournament would not organise itself!

On to Chapter 2

A/N - This is my first published fic for a while. I've had this (mostly) done since NaNo 2013, but I lost all my confidence and couldn't make myself post it. This is my attempt to get back into the swing of things, so hopefully Chapter 2 will follow soon. This story is *almost* complete as it stands. Some things do still need a bit of tweaking, but here's chapter 1 anyway.

A/N 2 - 19-10-2020 - I had originally posted this on here in 2016, but then I locked everything down. I'm now tentatively posting this anew on my blog, knowing that nobody is likely to see it. Maybe it will help build my confidence back up with regard to posting? Then perhaps I'll unlock (almost) everything else on this blog. (Or maybe move it to my other blog cos I like the name better LMAO)

I also think I need to update my icons...
