Intro

Subjugation records began life in 1992. My friend Ian and I ran it together for ten years producing 24 releases. The label emerged from within the UK hardcore punk community, armed with a strong DIY ethic, a declaration of independence and a pretty anarchic attitude. Creating alternatives, releasing challenging music and giving people the means to have what they had to say heard were our guerilla tactics. The record label came to an end in 2002.

This blog is part of an ongoing attempt to write my story of starting a punk record label in the nineties. The story telling starts and then stops as life’s events take over, or I lose the thread or inspiration. This isn’t, however, the usual story about the when, why, how much and how many – my brain doesn’t work like that. It is more about how I felt at the time about the records I was releasing and the bands I supported. Most of all how it felt to be me in these times with all my hopes, fears and passions for our music and all it conveyed.

So this isn’t the story of things, it’s the story of me, which just happens to be bound neatly into the story of some records.

  2. Helene–you guys put out a ton of good records throughout the ’90s! And you’ve aged well! We are about the same age; I’m a 48-year-old hardcore kid with an aging memory, but I def remember Subjugation! Cheers from Detroit, MI.

  3. Hey Helene,
It’s Tommy from Liverpool. I stayed with you & Nick a few times, you both being huge influences on my life. I am just starting to write a review for the Realization comp for some young kids zine. Looking up details on Subjug’ I found myself here. Love to you both.

  4. Hello, Helene. I am Emma from Birmingham and wanted to say how important the music was for me back in the 90’s. It got me through being the odd one out at college and transported me to a place of refuge and excitement. I miss dancing the way I use to in my late teens, early twenties. Loved everything that Subjugation helped birth and enjoyed the 1 in 12 Club. From basements to schools it was an awesome journey. Just wish we could have a dance again at gigs now in our 40’s and beyond. Thank you xx
