The hybrid sneaker and Mary Jane silhouette is true to size and comfortable from the get-go, with ample arch support. Trending Now: The Adidas Samba Jane Shoes are a close second, offering variety to the uber-popular Samba style. No-Pain Kitten Heel: Coach Runway Mule is professional for the office but won't kill your arches during a presentation or on a walk to lunch. One of the most important aspects of good style is function. As much as we love a comfortable heel and a sneaker, shoes that lie somewhere between the two ends of the footwear spectrum—say, loafers, ballet flats, and hybrid styles—are the most versatile. They’re comfortable, yet appropriate for work and semi-formal settings without screaming 'sporty' or 'dressed-up'. “Slip-ons are having their moment, if you will, because collectively, we're all getting comfortable with molding together fashion and function,” stylist Lauren Sharkey says. “In today's busy society, we need a shoe that does both.” So, the InStyle editors found and tested stylish slip-on shoes that do both. To narrow the list to only the best, we researched dozens of brands, read through customer reviews, and tapped a team of style and footwear experts—including a podiatrist—to share their insights. Without laces or zippers, ranging from sneaker crossovers to flats and low heels, these shoes are comfortable, chic, and easy to put on when you need to run out the door. It fits true to size and requires no break-in period. Plus, it has excellent arch support, which makes it so comfortable that Senior Editor Erika Reals wore them on her moving day and felt supported after hours on her feet. If you love a ballet flat but hate the flat footbed they often have, this hybrid could be your next favorite. While these shoes may not appear easy to style at first glance, stylist Alex Lamb suggests pairing them with “something simple, like jeans, a T-shirt, a nice sweater, and a transitional jacket for the fall.” Worth Noting: Compared to other Solomon styles, these are less plush in the footbed, but still very supportive. Size: 5–14 | Width: Medium | Material: Leather, synthetic Credit: InStyle Credit: InStyle Erika Reals, senior editor: “Consider these my new favorite sneakers! Or should I say Mary Janes? I can see these holding up for several years, and I'm sure I'll get a ton of use out of them.” Best Strappy Slip-On Shoes Adidas Samba Jane Shoes Credit: Adidas $78 at Goat.com $64 at Stockx.com $80 at Footlocker.com Adidas’s Samba Jane is the definition of a crossover shoe. “My daughter has a pair, and they're adorable,” Lamb says. “It's a fun play on that traditional Samba style, but more feminine.” If you love a low-profile sneaker, but want a shoe that isn’t sitting in all of your friends’ closets, the Samba Jane is one you’ll want to add to your cart. It feels like a traditional Samba on the foot, making it suitable for walking and wearing almost anywhere. Lamb would pair these with dark wash straight-leg jeans so that you can show off the strap. Add a frilly sock for a fun, stylish touch and warmth on cooler days. Worth Noting: You may want to consider adding an insole to this style if you have high arches or prefer increased support. Size: 3–15.5 | Width: Medium | Material: Leather Credit: InStyle Credit: InStyle Summer, tester: “I like these shoes a lot. They're minimalist, relatively affordable, and on trend in multiple ways. It's not often that you get a Mary Jane style in a sports shoe, but in this case, it was a home run.” Best Sporty Slip-On Shoes Brooks Glycerin 22 SE Credit: Amazon $99 $90 at Amazon $165 at Dick's If you’re looking for a slip-on sneaker that will support your arches through a busy day or a challenging workout, the Brooks Glycerin 22 SE is the slip-on shoe for you. The classic sneaker will save you the worry of shoelaces coming untied as you improve your mile time, without sacrificing the comfort you want from a running shoe. This lightweight, lace-less sneaker is best for high arches and is more than supportive enough for dog walks, jogs, and grocery store runs. “Pair them with a legging or biker shorts, and a baggy sweatshirt. It's a cute, sporty, active wear look,” Lamb says. Worth Noting: Our tester found that, while these shoes do stretch a bit within the first few wears, they run slightly small. Consider sizing up by a half size for the most comfortable fit. Size: 5–12 | Width: Medium | Material: Synthetic InStyle Alyssa, tester: “I used these sneakers to run errands out of the house, walk, and run on the treadmill. The shoes themselves are very breathable and lightweight, which I love, and my feet stayed generally cool even in Florida weather.” Best Slip-On Shoe for Work Coach Women's Runway Mule Ballet Flat Credit: Amazon $117 at Amazon This sweet kitten heel mule makes for an excellent office shoe, or even a bridal wardrobe shoe, as Lamb points out. I loved pairing them with athletic shorts for a funky Carrie Bradshaw-esque look or wearing them under dresses, skirts, and jeans. The pointed toe and bow detail easily elevate an otherwise casual look, and the low heel height means your arches won’t be crying out by the end of the day. Worth Noting: These kitten heels need to be broken in. I used Band-Aids to get through the first couple of wears, but the discomfort subsided from the third wear onward. Size: 5–11 | Width: Medium | Material: Leather InStyle Emma Greene, writer: “The Coach Runway Mule is one of the cutest, easiest-to-style slip-on shoes I’ve ever had. They fit true to size and are incredibly easy to slip on, literally just slide your foot in as you would any slide, and you’re good to go.” Best Slip-On Shoes for Style Dolce Vita Elm Flats Credit: Dolce Vita $130 $90 at Dolcevita.com A classic mule or loafer style like the Dolce Vita Elm Flats is the definition of fashion and function, giving you a trending print and the comfort Dolce Vita’s flats are known for. It makes an excellent fall work shoe that will hold up as you walk from your office to dinner with friends or enjoy a day of shopping around town. “I love a loafer or mule to chic up an off-duty look,” Sharkey says. Pair them with wide-leg trousers or a slip dress for an easy, professional outfit. Worth Noting: While we wouldn’t call these flats uncomfortable by any means, they don’t have any padding or arch support, so they likely won't become your go-to walking shoe. Size: 5–13 | Width: Medium | Material: Calf hair, leather, synthetic Credit: InStyle Credit: InStyle Essence Wiley, writer: “These cow print flats are the perfect transition shoe. They're trendy since Western style is everywhere, but they're super easy to style even if your wardrobe isn't super trend-forward. They're versatile and will easily work as the seasons change.” Best Slip-On Shoes for Walking New Balance TDS MT10T Credit: New Balance View on Newbalance.com New Balance shoes prioritize comfort, and this fashion-forward slip-on style is no exception. “It's kind of playing into the ‘it's so ugly, it's cute’ trend we’re seeing with slip-ons,” Sharkey says. This pug-like style is comfortable from the first wear and offers plenty of support for trend lovers with high arches. It is on the sportier side, so pair it with your favorite capri leggings, a running jacket, and a slicked-back hairstyle for a sleek workout or errand-running outfit. The adjustable elastic closure ensures they are secure and comfortable on the foot for miles. Additionally, their high-quality construction will help them withstand rough wear. Worth Noting: This style fits snug, so consider sizing up for your best fit. Size: 5.5–15.5 | Width: Medium | Material: Suede, leather, rubber Credit: InStyle Credit: InStyle Erika Reals, senior editor: “These became my go-to shoes for slipping out of the apartment to run a quick errand or walk my dog. I loved the toggle feature on the upper part of the shoe that loosens or tightens the collar to fit your foot better; I feel like that was a nice way to customize the fit without integrating laces.” Best Slip-On Shoes for Vacation Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 Sabot Credit: Onitsuka Tiger $210 at Onitsukatiger.com Onitsuka Tiger combined the comfort of a sneaker and the breathability of a sandal into one with this slip-on style. They offer a completely hands-free slip-on experience and run true to size, without slipping or sliding as you walk. If you’re planning your next tropical vacation, consider adding an edge to your resortwear by pairing this sneaker hybrid with a sheer cover-up and your favorite swimsuit. Worth Noting: While they make a strong beach or poolside shoe, they lack sufficient traction, so they aren’t ideal for excursions like hiking. Size: 5–14.5 | Width: Medium | Material: Synthetic fiber, natural fiber, rubber Credit: InStyle Credit: InStyle Chantia, tester: “I wore these shoes to brunch with my friend, while running errands, and a few times while on vacation…I love the style and design of these shoes. They’re on the casual side of things rather than dressy.” Best Slip-On Shoes for Travel Reformation Buffy Ruched Ballet Flat Ruched Ballet Flat Credit: Reformation $198 at Reformation Ballet flats are among the easiest slip-on shoes to style, and this pair is also convenient for travel. The slim, unstructured silhouette takes up barely any room in a suitcase or handbag, the strap fits securely for a worry-free speed walk to your boarding gate, and they’re comfortable enough to wear on walking-filled travel days. This Reformation pair isn’t available in wide sizing. However, our tester noted that her wide feet felt secure and comfortable, never smooshed in these stretchy flats, making them ideal for any foot width. Worth Noting: These flats can slip and slide on slick floors. Size: 5–11 | Width: Medium | Material: Leather InStyle Chantia, tester: “These are my most comfortable pair of flats. No break-in days needed. The insole felt soft and supportive. I never felt too flat on the ground or as though I lost stability with them on. I wore this while commuting, to work, and when running to the grocery store. They held up very well. No scuffing, no wear and tear.” Our Testing Process The InStyle team tested each of the eight pairs listed for four weeks, wearing them for a minimum of 20 total hours before submitting insights. They rated each shoe on comfort, support, and how easy or difficult it was to slip on and off as they traveled, worked, and walked. The edit team then analyzed their feedback to share the best aspects and drawbacks of each high-ranking pair. What to Keep in Mind Comfort: For comfort, Lamb recommends starting with a cushioned insole. She adds that a flexible sole, like that found on a sneaker-like shoe, will give more freedom of movement, and an adjustable closure can add security for those who may be unstable on their feet or walking on uneven ground, such as rocky trails or cobblestone streets. Traction: If your slip-on shoe will be worn for active outdoor use, whether that entails running errands or a marathon, Sondema N. Tarr, D.P.M., a podiatrist, says traction is key. “This will lower your risk of slips or falls,” she says. Especially if you live in an area where conditions can become icy and slick, look for slip-on shoes with chunky rubber outsoles that offer plenty of grip. Shape: According to Dr. Tarr, pointed toes tend to cramp toes, causing aches and pains over time. She also advises against anyone with wide feet attempting to squeeze into a too-narrow shoe, as it will likely cause foot problems, such as swelling, pain, and the development of corns, over time. Your Questions, Answered Are slip-on shoes good for walking? Although not all slip-on shoes are suitable for long periods of walking—trust us, you probably don’t want to take your daily walk in ballet flats or loafers—plenty of options are made for that. Look for sneaker-like styles with extra cushy insoles, shock-absorbing outsoles, and ample arch support. A breathable fabric upper that circulates air will ensure your feet stay comfortable and dry during long walks. Most importantly, make sure they fit your foot properly, adds Dr. Tarr. You won’t benefit from any fancy orthopedic features if they’re too tight or loose. How do you style slip-on shoes? Whether it’s a slip-on sneaker or an office-ready flat, slip-on shoes tend to be minimalist in design, allowing for plenty of styling versatility. “We can wear them from weekday to weekend very nicely,” Sharkey says. “Slip-on shoes lend themselves to be paired really well with denim and to work casually.” She suggests wearing them with a wide-leg pair of trousers and a V-neck sweater for a workday look that will take you from a chilly morning commute into a warmer afternoon. Alternatively, try styling slip-on shoes with baggy jeans and a simple top for the weekend—layer with an oversized jacket for proportional contrast and warmth. On warmer days, swap the pants for billowing maxi skirts and slip dresses.
