- Extraordinary radar imagery of yesterday's coastal storm w/ two centers of rotation combining at landfall over San Fran to produce banded rainfall and strong winds. While likely not w/o precedent globally, this likely won't ever happen again in our lifetimes over coastal CA.Last several hours of radar data out of San Francisco via @RadarOmega Can't say I've seen two meso-lows Fujiwara off the California coast like this before. Numerous reports of wind damage have been coming in as these produced gusts of around 60 - 80 mph. #CAwx
00:00 - Models continue to highlight the potential for successive #AtmtosphericRivers over the U.S. West Coast this week and into the weekend. #CAwx #ORwx #WAwx Visit cw3e.ucsd.edu/cw3e-ar-update… for more information on the forecast.
GIF - Forecast models are now predicting the incoming AR will reach AR4 ranking in the Bay Area. 80% chance of being at least an AR3
- We’re watching the potential for an #AtmosphericRiver (AR) to bring California’s first widespread rain/snow event for the wet season next week. Let’s look at some of the details. #CAwx #ORwx #WAwx @Scripps_Ocean cw3e.ucsd.edu/iwv-and-ivt-fo…
- Hard to overstate how remarkable this winter has been for water supply in Central CA. Per @mdettinger, current water storage in 4 Tulare Basin reservoirs is ~2x the 2003-2020 average. Enormous amount of water still locked up in record-breaking snowpack. #CAwx #CAwater
- #AtmosphericRiver activity is forecast to continue over California during the next 7 days. Heavy precipitation will likely result in additional hydrologic impacts over Northern CA. #CAwx For a more detailed look at the forecast, visit: cw3e.ucsd.edu/cw3e-ar-update….
GIF - 1/9 We're looking at a big shift in the weather pattern over CA beginning this weekend, with the potential for several storms to impact the state through the end of December. Here’s an overview of what we know right now. #CAwx
- #AtmosphericRiver landfall expected later Monday into CA with continued uncertainty in *exact* landfall & impacts to Bay Area. @NWSWPC graphic has cluster of (stronger, more impactful) n'rly storm tracks. GFS (shown) still follows s'rly options. Santa Cruz south still focus.#CAwx
- Interesting forecasted evolution by GFS model of next week's storm with merger of two regions of low pressure & a storm-following pressure decrease of >24 mb in under 24 hours (💣). Another bomb cyclone offshore of California? [I might have to find a restaurant that serves crow]
GIF - 3 models, 3 slightly diff predictions for landfalling #atmosphericriver Mon night->Tue. Uncertainty still remains in landfall location & intensity. Flood risk will be high on heels of recent event. We’re planning flights w/ @53rdWRS and @Scripps_Ocean teams to launch balloons.
- Replying to @CW3E_ScrippsAR 5 conditions are possible in the San Francisco Bay Area. Portions of Northern California may receive more than 10 inches of precipitation during the next 7 days. #CAwx For more information about these ARs and their potential impacts, visit: cw3e.ucsd.edu/cw3e-ar-update….
- Multiple #AtmosphericRivers are forecast to impact the US West Coast this weekend into next week, with the strongest AR expected to arrive on Monday. Heavy rain, heavy mountain snow, and flooding are possible in western OR and WA. For a more detailed look at the forecast, visit:
GIF - Good Morning, West Coast! Latest forecasts remain on track for a moderate-to-strong intensity AR3 #atmosphericriver in Cali beginning later this afternoon into Friday. Be on the lookout for strong winds, heavy rain, melting snow, and potential flooding. #CAwx
