Big gulp! The Nautilus team spotted a gulper eel doing just that in @hawaiireef. That pouch-like mouth can inflate in an instant, scooping up much larger prey like a pelican! This gulper was likely a juvenile, as they can grow up to three feet in length. #NautilusinPMNM

Did you see it?! We had an extended visit with a Vampyroteuthis infernalis (literally meaning "vampire squid from hell"). Neither a squid nor octopus, this fierce-sounding cephalopod actually fishes for marine snow using two retractable filaments and mucus-covered suckers!

🐙CEPHALOPOD ALERT🐙We observed 1000+ deep sea octopus (Muusoctopus robustus) exploring #DavidsonSeamount @MBNMS. Never before seen in such massive aggregations, females were brooding eggs near shimmering fluid seeps--previously unknown to occur in this region! #NautilusinMBNMS

Spooky! This ghostly Grimpoteuthis octopus drifted past flapping wing-like fins, then ballooned out its webbed arms. Also known as an umbrella octopus, this individual was approx. 60cm (almost two feet) long! 👻Spotted near #DavidsonSeamount in @MBNMS #NautilusinMBNMS

Someone aboard #NautilusLive had food on their mind when they nicknamed this the Cheeto Sponge! The two green dots on the second image represent 10 centimeters (4 inches) — a size that suggests this sponge could be more than a century old!
