"If half the kids can't read without paying for outside tutors, you don't have an 'intervention problem' - you have a core instruction problem." An official told me that was "deep" My respnse: It's really not. We just abandoned common sense to justify practices and outcomes.

School Boards, stop whining about literacy scores and start managing the superintendent. Make 'Literacy Improvement' part of the Sup's formal evaluation. Factor in survey data from educators about preparedness, materials, management, usability, and alignment. Do. Your. Job.

Yesterday, a former student called about daughter's new teacher: "Mr Weaver, I had you 2 years; we did government, civics, history, and I STILL don't know if you're a Republican or Democrat. This teacher's there 1 day, and we know everything. She's 7, what are you doing?" 1/2

My city was dubbed America's most violent in 2 of my 7 teenage years. My father's skull was crushed by guys wielding a metal pipe. I was stabbed. Cousins killed. Thank God I had teachers who taught me how to read, instead of trying to understand my trauma and build relationship.

School Administrators must learn to teach kids how to read. If you don't know it, and won't learn it, how on Earth can you lead it. Yes, that also means central office staff.

Twitter needs a "blue check" for people who've actually taught children to read - consistently and across demographics. That'd help people understand if they're listening to a theorist, successful practitioner, or somebody who's full of it.

I was asked to reconsider the term 'Science of Reading' because it's divisive + makes some people uncomfortable? Well, centering what's comfortable for adults is partly how we got here in the first place. So no. @RightToReadFilm @Hunt_Institute @FulcrumLiteracy

Please don't tell me your teaching methods and materials are culturally relevant, inclusive, or liberatory if they produce illiterate children. Just don't.

A young man (20's) struggled with the airport kiosk and asked me for help. Recognizing signs of illiteracy, I stayed til he had Boarding Pass in hand. "Thank you for sticking with me." Those words ... Our young people need us to figure this out.

"But how'd you reduce suspensions?" We taught kids how to read. "But how'd you improve attendance?" We taught kids how to read "But how'd you reduce teacher turnover?" We taught kids how to read Etc, etc... sometimes answers really are simple (just not easy)

Dyslexia is a real thing. School systems need to have a strategy to address it.... specifically in regular classroom instruction of reading.

Imagine being a teacher & realizing the reading curriculum isn't aligned to standards (EdReports), intervention program does harm (apm), and what you learned in school isn't working. The public blames you while system leaders get paid. Pray for teachers and students.

Having veteran teachers on staff is huge. Young energy is also needed, but a lot of crazy things happen because there are no respected, veteran educators on staff to pull people to the side (teacher, principal, parent, custodian, or student) and quietly say what needs to be said.
