An area of Israel home to more than 100,000 people has been almost completely emptied of its residents this week. Haven't seen anyone call this an ethnic cleansing, a forcible transfer, a monstrous crime, nor anyone thunderously alluding to "international law" on this.

Human rights groups are getting ready to castigate Israel for occupying a territority they falsely claimed it already occupied, enforcing a siege on a territory they falsely claimed was under siege, and creating refugees of people they falsely claimed were already refugees.

Say what you will about Hamas, at least they had the decency not to warn Israelis to evacuate the area where they staged their attack before they launched it. Because it turns out that that would have been a war crime.

Is there an effective military response that Israel could have mounted after October 7 that would not have been met with violence against diaspora Jews and a mobilization of int'l orgs, NGOs, and the milieu of "international law" scholars behind the claim that it was a war crime?

If the IDF occupies part or all of the Gaza Strip in the current fighting, what will the international law "experts" and humanitarians who claimed it was under Israeli "occupation" for the last 18 years call that? A double-dog occupation? Occupation Extra? Could get awkward.

That there exists an entire intellectual ecosystem where something like this could sound remotely plausible says so much about what has gone wrong with "human rights" and our common understanding of war, peace, and history. 1/2

The targeted killing of Anas al-Sharif and five other journalists on Sunday means at least 242 Palestinian journalists have been killed by Israeli forces since the beginning of October 2023. No conflict in modern history has seen a higher number of journalists killed.
Three images on top of each other. Image 1: A photo of Adolf Hitler with writing that says, Second World War: 1939-45: 69 journalists killed. Image 2: A photo of US soldiers walking across a field with writing that says, Vietnam War: 1955-75: 63 journalists killed. Image 3: A photo of Gaza with writing that says, Gaza: October 2023-present 242 journalists killed* *United Nations figures

I didn't even know until yesterday that it was scientifically possible to infiltrate thousands of different people's mobile devices with material that once activated would cause them to all simultaneously tweet inanities and reveal themselves to be terrorist sympathizers. Wow!

Four things that are important to know about this radically dishonest article in the Guardian today regarding the Israeli family murdered in their homes by an Iranian missile two nights ago:

On this day 77 years ago, May 28, 1948, the Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem surrendered to the Arab attackers who had laid siege to it, ending for 19 years centuries of continuous Jewish life in the Old City. Arab forces won that battle by blocking the supply of food and water,...

I can't stop staring at this tweet. Not just because it's so self-indulgent and morally defective. But because it's believable. All my grad school friends who have been silently avoiding me for six weeks: this is what they're thinking, right?

Today in feeling sad and hopeless: one of my grad school acquaintances is Israeli, and wrote their dissertation on (what I interpreted as) an anti-occupation topic. And now, they are posting photos of victims of the Hamas attack with "Hamas = ISIS."

In the suicide bombing years it was precisely at the moment of a Palesitnian atrocitiy that the rhetorical demonization of Israel would escalate. It's transparent cognitive dissonance reduction: if Palestinians just did THAT to them, then the Israelis must be even more evil. 1/3

The tenets of contemporary "anti-racist" discourse on Jews: 1. Antisemitism that doesn't come from white supremacists is fundamentally an expression of a GRIEVANCE and not a PATHOLOGY. 2. Concern about such antisemitism is itself a FORM OF RACISM.

In a time of heightened anxiety, it's natural for all us to seek comfort in things that make us feel most safe, most at home, most ourselves. For the @guardian, that means running a piece of gross antisemitism masquerading as progressive anti-racism. 1/
