I'm incredibly excited to share that we are launching Ethlabs. The core belief: This is a unique moment for Ethereum. Adoption is here, the global economy is moving onchain. We want to help Ethereum realize its potential and become the shared global settlement layer.

Announcing Ethlabs: a non-profit R&D lab for Ethereum and ETH Our mission is to make Ethereum the settlement layer of the global economy. The internet became global because shared protocols created a common language between networks. Private systems remained useful, but

Vitalik has been actively advocating for account abstraction for years. I believe this should indeed be a priority now. EOA self-custody is too complicated to be viable for many normie users. We need smart contract wallets with strong standards for things like social recovery.

Make no mistake, what we are seeing is a coordinated attack trying to undermine Ethereum’s credible neutrality. Mind you, not in reality, but in perception. Those with high context know how silly this is, but low-context observers get the impression a rollback was in the cards.

Starting today, Tim and I will be leading the work at the EF on scaling Ethereum L1. This is part of a restructuring of the R&D group to more effectively support the three EF strategic priorities: - scale L1 - scale L2s (i.e. blobs) - improve UX

I’m thrilled to introduce Protocol: a new structure for @ethereumfndn’s R&D teams! Our focus: scale L1, scale blobs, and improve UX, without compromising on Ethereum's core values. The world is ready for the world computer. It's on us to deliver it.

One lesson I learned from LUNA/Terra is to not stay quiet about reckless experiments pushed onto users. For all I know the Blast team has the best intentions, but taking user funds and investing them, while calling it "risk-free", is straight out of the FTX playbook. Not okay.

Introducing Blast: The only Ethereum L2 with native yield for ETH and stablecoins. We’ve raised $20m from @paradigm and @standardcrypto to build the L2 that helps you earn more. Details on how to get early access at the end of the thread👇

Never understood why it’s considered a perk to board a plane early. Why would you prefer to wait for takeoff in a crammed plane seat instead of the much more comfortable space at the gate?

Quick personal update: Tuesday was my last day at Quilt, I am now a member of the Ethereum Foundation research team. I‘ll basically continue to do the same work as before, but have been drifting more towards pure research for a while now, so that move made sense.

I think we have been too complacent because EOA self-custody is good enough for power users, and centralized exchanges looked good enough for unsophisticated users. Turns out, they were and are not.

Fun comparison: On the call today we moved the merge date ahead by 4 days (9/19 to 9/15). Those 4 extra days of PoW would have resulted in $100M additional ETH issuance. The Protocol Guild (a core dev funding org) has raised a total of $10M in its entire existence.

My guess is IP. Qualcomm default patent royalties are 5% of total device price. (Apple negotiated a lower fixed price for iPhones & iPads) Apple is about to start their move to in-house modems though - maybe that will finally make MacBooks with mobile connectivity possible!

My latest supply chain survey indicates that Apple's in-house 5G chip shipments will grow rapidly and replace Qualcomm's 5G chips. It's estimated that Apple's in-house 5G chip shipments will reach 35-40 million units in 2025, 90-110 million in 2026, and 160-180 million in 2027.

It's a good day to be optimistic about Ethereum. Many problems. That's inevitable for a 10 year old project. But so much substance, and so much potential. Spent the morning working on execution scaling plans. We might have a path to 10x everything except state growth (for now).

I was initially upset when I heard about the latest Ledger firmware upgrade introducing seed backup functionality. Looking into this a bit, my understanding now is that this does not actually seem to change any trust assumptions: 1/

This Ledger backup situation makes me realize that I am a bit fuzzy on what exact properties of my HW wallet I am actually trusting. The seed not physically being able to leave the SE? Or just the firmware not allowing that? What then are my trust assumptions around fw upgrades?
