Another AI paradox: people are excited about LLMs, some even think that AGI is just around the corner. But some students are depressed how they can still get a PhD. Is it becoming pointless? Some personal notes on this. (1/8)

Dear Students, please don't get discouraged... we need you. Quoting another Geoff: "The future depends on some graduate student who is deeply suspicious of everything I have said" (8/8)

Our 2012 paper ‘On causal and anticausal learning’ just received a Test of Time Honorable Mention at @icmlconf #ICML2022: icml.cc/2012/papers/62…. I am really grateful, and would like to use this occasion for some thoughts on causality and machine learning:

This may be a good starting point for people thinking about how causality can help tackle some of the open problems of machine learning. It discusses core assumptions such as "independent causal mechanisms" and "sparse mechanism shift".

Geoff and John are a truly inspired choice for the Nobel Prize in Physics. Not only because they have done groundbreaking work for machine learning research, but also since this choice reflects an understanding that machine learning methods are changing how science is done (1/2)

Today at NeurIPS, we are holding a memorial session for Olivier Chapelle, who passed away earlier this year. Olivier was one of the leading machine learning researchers of his generation, a kind human being and a friend. nips.cc/virtual/2020/p…

And this is as true today as it was 30 years ago. We don't really understand how LLMs generalize, we don't understand how to improve their (causal?) reasoning skills, we need means to prevent harm, . ... (Besides... there is a whole word beyond language.) (7/8)

This time, the crisis lasted and I moved to machine learning. I never regretted it - it's a privilege to work in a field where so many conceptual questions are still open! (6/8)
