Some personal news, as they say! It’ll be tough leaving @IPPR as I’ve loved leading a fantastic team with huge impact. But I’m honoured & excited to be asked to help shape and deliver such a critical policy agenda at the heart of the new government. Can’t wait to get stuck in!

Household analogies like 'maxing out the credit card' are intuitive but misrepresent the economic reality, badly, to the public. Today we've published a letter from 24 economists, calling on the BBC to avoid using these analogies in its reporting:

I thought the media had come a long way in recognising austerity as a political choice & not an economic necessity But it's been extraordinary to see the speed at which the public conversation (with honourable exceptions) has pivoted to spending cuts as difficult but unavoidable

Oh, we've irritated @GuidoFawkes. Yep, we think that large (eg larger than ordinary gifts) transfers of wealth should be taxed after the first £125k. So I guess if you regularly get £125k christmas presents, yeh this might affect you.

Leaving aside how this figure was arrived at I’m seriously losing patience (& it’s not just the Conservatives) with ‘X would cost EVERY HOUSEHOLD £Y’. That might be true if our entire tax system were a poll tax. Thankfully it’s not. Statements like this are misleading at best.

It is fundamentally unfair that income from wealth is taxed less than income from work. Our tax system works for the wealthy at the expense of ordinary people.👨‍⚕️👮‍♀️👨‍🏫 We've released new figures showing ending this unfairness could raise £90bn over 5 yrs: ippr.org/research/publi…

In media news today: a man worth £100m to £500m is the new chairman of the BBC and a man worth £630m is bankrolling a US-style talkshow channel all to better serve people currently unheard. Right.
