A Pulitzer & a Peabody!! What an unbelievable 2 days! This feels like undeniable proof that Indigenous stories matter & that we should support Indigenous people to tell them. We are so grateful to survivors who shared with us & hope this means more people will hear their voices.

A friend shared this photo of my dad in NYC today. This image of the boy he was when he went to St. Michael’s breaks my heart. But it also leaves me in awe of the man he was able to become - how he reclaimed the beauty of our culture, language & community in spite of it all. 🧡

“Residential school survivors knew where the children were buried because some of them had dug their graves. They told their truths to the TRC & gave the country a plan in 94 calls to action. The survivors must have felt they were screaming into silence.”

As she lay dying in a hospital bed, an Atikamekw woman clicked her phone & broadcast a video of a hospital staff member telling her, "You're stupid as hell." Another is heard saying she made bad life choices & asked her what her children would say if they saw her in that state.

Echaquan's death comes only days before the anniversary of the Viens report, which found it is "impossible to deny" Indigenous people in Quebec are victims of "systemic discrimination" in accessing public services, including health-care services.

In the late 1970s, my dad was a special constable in the RCMP. One night when he was on patrol, he pulled over a vehicle because he suspected the driver was drinking. When he got to the window, he recognized the driver. It was a priest who had abused him in residential school.

On Wednesday, a wake was held for Damien Sanderson. His wife, Skye said that she anticipated an empty hall. Ms. Sanderson broke down when she opened the door to a room packed with community members & a table spread wide with food prepared by matriarchs.

Tonight, I’m thinking about Justice Murray Sinclair and of the times that I was lucky enough to hear him speak about his work with the TRC. This moment stands out for me. It’s his answer when he was asked, “Why can’t you just get over it?”

When asked if the way Echaquan was treated was an indication of systemic racism, Premier Legault maintained that it was not. "I really don't think that we have this kind of way of dealing with First Nations in our hospitals. Yes, there is some racism. We're working on that.”

I first heard this story about a year ago, when my brother shared it. I felt sick when I read this post. It made me realize that despite all of my reporting on residential schools, I didn’t know anything about my dad’s experience. I didn’t know where he went or for how long.

Not when it’s an all-white women panel covering an event you’ve been planning for weeks/months. Incremental change is not acceptable anymore. The ‘celebration’ and dismissive tone is disrespectful to your colleagues who have been fighting for meaningful changes at CBC for years.

Agree, but an all woman political panel is also worth celebrating.
