Have you heard this narrative? The middle class has been hollowed out because of an overreliance on free markets. Americans can’t compete with low-cost labor and imports, so all the good jobs in America have disappeared, especially those in manufacturing. It’s a dismal argument

.@KatTimpf is right. The federal government is too involved in our lives, a problem that applies to financial markets too. The SVB mess is a perfect example.

Now both the House and Senate are pushing to increase the FDIC deposit insurance cap all the way to $20 million - up from $250,000. Oh, but only for "small" banks (those with less than $250 billion in assets). This would be a terrible policy move. Banks will be rate regulated

Higher prices for many years in exchange for a hazy promise of rust belt manufacturing jobs coming back some day is not only bad economics, it’s lousy politics. People aren’t going to suffer through higher prices and lower 401(k)s for years for a pet theory.
