A savvy fan has kindly put together a searchable copy of my very long Goodreads "Ask the Author" column, to be found here:

https://allison-strandberg.github.io/...

Because Backups Are Good.

To actually ask new questions go to my GR site for same:

https://www.goodreads.com/author/1609...

And while we're at it, it seems this internet fallacy needs addressed yet again:

https://www.goodreads.com/questions/7...

The short answer is NO. Please do repost the above link wherever you may run across people or AIs repeating this misinformation. Not that that will stop them, evidently.

I am still fighting the good fight trying to find someone who can fix my solar panel inverter/data logger problem. Most of the people I’ve written to have ghosted me, and the one person who said he could help went into hospital and then died. I know it shouldn’t have made me laugh but it did. It’s an extreme method of not assisting.

Having said that I just found someone who said he’d come round on Thursday. So fingers crossed for Thursday.

Weather

It’s both sunny and windy here in Wales, and there’s an odd smell of burning. I think there must be a bit of forest on fire somewhere, but I can’t see it so it may be somewhere over the back of Bangor mountain.

Edited to add: my podiatrist told me that the wildfire was in Conwy, between Conwy and Bethesda. It was so bad that some people had to be evacuated. It must have been bad if I could smell it ten miles away in Bangor.

Penric on Paper recap

A quick review of the currently available Penric & Desdemona tales collections on paper. In more-or-less chronological order:

Penric's Progress contains the novellas "Penric's Demon", "Penric and the Shaman", and "Penric's Fox". Though all the tales are semi-independent, if you like starting at the beginning, start here.

Penric's Travels contains the novellas "Penric's Mission", "Mira's Last Dance", and "The Prisoner of Limnos". These three tales form a closely connected arc, and should be read in this order.

Penric's Labors contains the novellas "Masquerade in Lodi", "The Orphans of Raspay", and "The Physicians of Vilnoc". "Masquerade" is an earlier-set story written later, but if you've come this far you should have no trouble slotting it in.

Penric's Intrigues contains the novel-length The Assassins of Thasalon and the novella "Knot of Shadows".

All four volumes are available in matching hardcovers. Progress and Travels are presently out of print in mass market paperback, though used copies are out there at rising prices such that you might as well treat yourself to the nice hardcovers.

Hope this helps...

I think Mitch Benn has something here (It's from his Substack):

Start quote

GUYS - I’ve just realised what Farage is going to do…

The thing is he now has NO WAY to proceed which doesn’t humiliate him.

If he wins, he is, as Rachel Reeves put it, The Man Who Spent His Summer Arguing With A Bin.

If he bails, he’s The Man Who Fled From A Bin.

And if he LOSES…

So he’s only got one way out, and I’ve just realised what it’s going to be:

FAKE ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT.

I am NOT KIDDING.

First of all, he steals all his moves from the Trump playbook. He also learns from Trump’s mistakes. He needs a decent flesh wound; nothing life threatening but something better than a slight graze on his ear that mysteriously vanishes the next day.

Second, it gets him out the race on wounded health grounds… He leaves the field a martyred hero, pledging to resume the fight as soon as he recovers (before buggering off to the USA forever, of course).

Third, all jokes at his expense suddenly become Very Poor Taste and the ridicule he’s suffering ends. This disarms Binface and makes him at least temporarily immune to being laughed at, which is the ONLY thing he (like all Fascists) actually fears.

Fourthly, it retroactively justifies his “I needed all those millions for security” claim.

This is why the only other option - feigning a heart attack, which let’s face it, we’d all believe - wouldn’t be as appealing to him. It achieves the other objectives but not this. It would also cancel out the obvious flaw in his “Most attacked MP” schtick, ie “What about Jo Cox?”.

SPREAD THIS AROUND; the only thing that will stop Farage trying this is if he knows we’ve all seen it coming.

I know it says “comedian” in the bio, but this is not a joke; I genuinely believe Farage is going to stage his own failed assassination. Spread the word.

I am pleased to report that I have been honored with a place in the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle's 2026 Hall of Fame roster:

https://www.mopop.org/sffhof-vote-2026

If you click the plus sign next to an entry, it gives a little explanatory paragraph.

I've described career awards before as "an award for winning awards". Collect the whole set...

(This database is incredibly handy, and I'm so grateful to the unsung folks who put it together. It has much to offer beyond Bujold, I should point out.)
