Minnis Bay flower beds community project

The area identified for this project was historically a traditional council-managed garden, protected by established hedging. Over time, the garden has been grassed over and has lost its horticultural and environmental value. Birchington Together CIC in partnership with Birchington in Bloom proposes to restore this space by creating a sustainable perennial flower and shrub border. Rather than reinstating the former annual bedding display, we will establish a carefully designed planting scheme using hardy perennial plants and shrubs suited to coastal conditions. This approach will provide year-round colour, structure and seasonal interest while significantly reducing the need for annual replanting and ongoing maintenance. The project will create an attractive public space for the benefit and enjoyment of both residents and visitors and a more diverse environment to benefit and encourage birds, bees, butterflies, hover flies and other wildlife.

Suggestion of what it will look like

Fund raising is underway and Birchington Together CIC have applied to the National Lottery for a donation towards the costs of ground work, waste removal, soil improvement and signage. Birchington in Bloom will provide all the plants, shrubs and bulbs etc (using other small grants from Thanet Earth and Birchington Parish Council and their own stocks). Birchington Together of course have also contributed.
