Session Log: Palace of the Vampire Queen 6

[IN WHICH OUR COMPANY SLAY THE GIANT RATS] I ran this session analog in the woods, so my note-taking was considerably less detailed then it would be otherwise. Without further ado: The Party Cinnamon. Fighter. Platemail and shield, flail. Powder/Pollen . Cribswap (Lunar/Solar); chainmail, sword and shield or light crossbow. Tomelo the Fierce (Dwarf) and Diino (Cleric), expert rust monster killers, armed with a flint spear and wooden cudgel respectively.  Kai.  A dumb hunky Fighter with expensive taste. Chainmail, shortbow, spear. Recent Additions Jalen Arrowdart.  A mage, raised amongst a clan of archers. Dexterous, though forbidden by her class from using a bow. The Delve  Powder is in her lunar aspect, she prepared  Hold Portal . Jalen prepared  Protection from Evil . The party return to the dungeon, briefly exploring before they are ambushed once again by the giant rats, encountered during the previous session [ I had added them to my random encounter...

Session Log: Palace of the Vampire Queen 5

[IN WHICH OUR COMPANY DISCOVER THE SECOND LEVEL, AND ORLYN TORCHBEARER DIES IN THE DARKNESS] We played Vampire Queen yesterday, only like 150 days after I actually ran the last session. Felt really good to be back. I've officially broken this blog's weird curse of never having more then 4 session logs for one campaign. We also found some of the dungeon's cats! The whimsy of their presence here is honestly one of the things that endeared me to  Vampire Queen  as something I might want to run, so I was delighted to have that come up. Without further ago: The Party Cinnamon. Recent Additions Kai.  A dumb hunky Fighter with expensive taste. Chainmail, shortbow, spear. Orlyn Torchlighter.  A Fighter, spurred on by h...

Session Log: Palace of the Vampire Queen 4

[IN WHICH OUR COMPANY TRADE BLOOD FOR GEMS] I actually ran this session on January 11th but life has been pretty much non-stop between then and now. I still wanted to post this for posterity. I really liked running this game and might pick it up now that I have more spare time again. Without further ago: The Party Giblet.  A feathery halfling; leather armour, shortbow and dagger. Cinnamon. Fighter; chainmail and shield, flail. Powder/Pollen . Cribswap (Lunar/Solar); chainmail, sword and shield or light crossbow. Tomelo the Fierce (Dwarf) and Diino (Cleric), expert rust monster killers, armed with a flint spear and wooden cudgel respectively. The Delve  Powder is in her lunar aspect, she prepared  Hold Portal .  The party return to where they fought the rust monster, with Powder uncovering another secret door there. The group listen at the door, hear nothing, attempt to force it and fail. Opening the door snaps a wire, triggering a crossbow and setting off an...

[IN WHICH OUR COMPANY SLAY A RUST MONSTER AND DO BATTLE WITH THE MUPPET-THINGS IN THE WALLS] We return to the Palace of the Vampire Queen: alice's rust monster The Party Giblet.  A feathery halfling; leather armour, shortbow and dagger. Cinnamon. Fighter; chainmail and shield, flail. Powder/Pollen . Cribswap (Lunar/Solar); chainmail, sword and shield or light crossbow. Recent Additions Jeordi-of-the-Orange.  Fighter 3. Rescued from the dungeon during Session 1 . Tomelo the Fierce (Dwarf) and Diino (Cleric), allegedly experienced in killing rust monsters, armed with a flint spear and wooden cudgel respectively. The Delve  Powder is in her lunar aspect, she prepared  Hold Portal .  The party return to the dungeon, having hired on Tomelo and Diino, and accompanied by Jeordi, repaying a favor. The party make for the network of secret rooms where the rust monster had previously been encountered. Tomelo and Diino strip their armour, and direct Cinnamon to break ...

Session Log: Palace of the Vampire Queen 2

[IN WHICH THE DWARF LEYOL IS SLAIN BY A GELATINOUS CUBE]   Got to run more Palace of the Vampire Queen, with a slightly shorter session this weekend. I've been loving playing one-on-one, its been a really great change of pace! While Vampire Queen  (1976) was written post Greyhawk (1975), and expects its use, we have been playing with flat od&d, only converting stats backwards as needed. This also means we are using od&d's XP for monsters slain, which is far more generous then in Greyhawk. I think this has been working well, since treasures on the first floor are rather sparse.

[IN WHICH OUR COMPANY MAKE THEIR FIRST FORAY INTO THE PALACE] I got to run  Palace of the Vampire Queen (1976) for a dear friend today! I think it went extremely well overall, and its fun to hopefully have a game going which requires significantly less scheduling to make happen. She played multiple characters, mostly a mechanical conceit to make the dungeon work, but I loved to see the life she gave these characters (each written on a space the size of a cue card).

A slender youth stands before two horsemen, armed and armoured. Her hair is dark and matted. Behind her stand a labourer and a coward. " We are free people. I am Jackdaw. I spilled the blood of Magnus Threefinger. "

Session Log: Hagfish Hall 4

In case you missed it, tomorrow (Jan 18), I'm up for the Debut Blog category in the #BLOGGIES24. If you've been enjoying Dungeon Doll, I would love it if you considered me for this! Without further ado, our fifth delve into my od&d dungeon: Hagfish Hall! Dandelion's Map The Party Daevon, a Veteran, armed with a polearm. Isabella, an Acolyte, armed with a pike. Dandelion, a Medium, armed with a sword. Hirelings Vanessa , a monk of the lawful faith, sporting a tonsure.   The Delve Date: January 13th. Cold wind, mild flurries. "A" Entry Hall-- The party returned to Hagfish Hall in the usual fashion. In the entry hall, the painted lady seemed to be ignoring them. "B" Cage Trap Room-- They headed east to the T-junction, then north. Since their last time here, the cage had been re-covered with another white sheet. Creeping in, they surrounded it, stabbing in with pike and polearm. The cage turned out to be empty. The party carried on to the north. List...

Session Log: Hagfish Hall 3

Image
While I was happy with the last two session logs, I felt like the signal-to-noise ratio was sort of low, so I'm trying to change that this time around. We did two delves this week, with a little downtime turn in-between.   The Party Daevon , a Veteran. Polearm, chain + shield. Isabella , an Acolyte. Pike, chain. Usually carries the lantern. Dandelion , a Medium. Sword, chain + shield. Dandelion's Map Delve I Date: January 2nd. Gross weather; low visibility, alternating between rain and flurries. The party return to the dungeon! Venturing inside, they are greeted by a mocking smile from the painting hanging overhead. Her expression suggests: "How have you not made it deeper?" In the interest of caution, attempts are made to listen at the eastern and western doors. The dungeon rebukes them, [with clock starting at 20, a 6 explodes into another 6, and then into a 5] for a flash moment, the lady in the painting seems to laugh. Fearing an approaching encounter, the party ...

If you missed it, you can find session 1 here . My group returned to Hagfish Hall this week, for our first full-session delve. I also tried out some downtime mechanics, and made my first checks for dungeon restock. The systems for both of these were adapted for od&d from the Serpent Song Hymnal , by I Cast Light! .

I got to run od&d for a small group of friends this week, in a dungeon of my own devising. We made characters, talked a bit about game expectations, and did a little group world-building exercise, so the delve itself was on the shorter side, but I think everyone seemed to enjoy it, and I'm happy with how it went.
