Erasure - Freedom Remixes Review

okay so. erasure's freedom remixes from 2000. yeah. i pulled this outta nowhere one rainy night, wasn't even looking for it. just fell into my playlist like a glitch. and honestly? kind of blew me away all over again. first off - it's a lot. nine tracks, all remixes of "freedom", same song stretched, twisted, flipped inside out. some people would say that's overkill. maybe they're right. but man, when that synth hits in the motiv 8 radio mix, it's like a jolt. clean, sharp, poppy. perfect for driving too fast with the windows down. feels like neon lights and bad decisions. in a good way. then there's mark's guitar vocal - twice. why two versions? no idea. but this one's wild. nine minutes of gritty guitar riffs over that pulsing beat. andy bell's voice all raw and echoey, like he's singing from the back of a warehouse. it's not polished. it's messy. i love it. makes me think they were just jamming, didn't care if it was "right", just wanted to feel it. jc's remix? smooth. too smooth? maybe. it floats. like you're drifting through a club at 4am and everyone's blurry. nice, but doesn't punch as hard. same with jason creasey's mix - solid, but forgettable next to the others. but then. quake vocal remake. damn. this one hits different. darker. trancey. the beat creeps in slow, then bam - you're lifted. vocals chopped, layered, haunting. i played this three times in a row once. missed my subway stop. worth it. untidy dub? weird name, weirder track. all echoes and bass drops. feels unfinished, like a sketch. but that's what i like. it's got soul. like someone left the tape running after the studio session ended. album version at the end is almost a joke. after all those wild rides, it drops back to the plain version. like, "remember this?" yeah. i do. but now it feels... small. did i hate anything? well. the repetition. it's one song. after a while, even the best remixes blur. could've cut two tracks. and yeah, where's the cd? one user said it's not even available. weird for a physical release. feels half-forgotten. but here's the thing. this album? it's not about perfection. it's about freedom, yeah, but also about playing. experimenting. erasure didn't phone it in. they threw paint at the wall and said "let's see what sticks." and you know what? some of it stuck hard.

1. ABBA - Abba Gold (Remixed) - 'cause if you're vibin' on Erasure's shiny pop sheen, why not go full glitter with the Swedish legends getting a dancefloor glow-up?
2. Pet Shop Boys - Disarm - chill, deep, synth-heavy remixes from the other kings of UK electro-pop. Like Erasure's cooler, slightly snarkier cousin.
3. Depeche Mode - Remixes 81-04 - DM goes bleepy-boop banger mode. Moody, catchy, and perfect for staring dramatically into the rain while strutting.
4. New Order - Get Ready (Remixed) - think pulsing basslines and Bernard Sumner muttering coolly over dance beats. It's like a Manchester rave in your ears.
5. Yello - Motion Picture Soundtrack (Remixed by Various) - weird, wild, and wobbly. If Erasure's synth-pop had a fever dream, it'd sound like this.
6. Bronski Beat - The Age of Consent (DJ mixes & reworks) - vintage queer electro with heart and stomp. A little political, a lot of pulse.
7. OMD - Messages (Remix Collection) - melancholy meets melody. These lads invented "sad bop" before it was a TikTok genre.
8. Goldfrapp - We Are Glitter - glammy, stompy, glam-rock-meets-disco remixes. Alison's voice could melt steel, and the beats? Oh, honey, they slap.
9. Soft Cell - The Art of Falling Apart (Remixes) - sleazy, synth-laden, and a little dangerous. Like a night out that starts at a cabaret and ends in a back-alley club.
10. Erasure - Pop! Remixed - wait, what? Yeah, more Erasure. Because if you love Freedom Remixes, you clearly can't get enough of Andy Bell's voice floating on synth clouds. Funny how we all just want to dance like no one's watching... even when everyone's judging your moves from across the club.
