Appveyor tests failing (CryptoGen)

A recent test invoking subprocesses has started causing failures in AppVeyor such as this one.

Apparently this is an issue with python affecting virtualenv and thus tox although these invocations are all using the same sys.executable, so it's not yet clear to me how precisely these issues are implicated.
