Keyman is a virtual keyboard management app designed to allow you to type on your PC in practically any language. Keyman allows you to install, create, and switch between fully customized keyboard layouts, covering everything from minority languages and regional dialects to complex writing systems such as Arabic, Devanagari, or Ethiopic, without being restricted by the limited options offered by the operating system itself.
Installation of keyboards and language library
From the first time you open the app, you have immediate access to an extensive online library with thousands of keyboard layouts, all ready to download and install in a matter of seconds. You can search by language name, geographic region, or language family, and the system will show you an interactive preview of each keyboard before you install it so you can check exactly which keys correspond to each special character.
Switching keyboards and daily use
Once the desired keyboards are installed, you can switch between them instantly using a configurable keyboard shortcut or by clicking the system icon that appears in the Windows taskbar, as they are integrated into the operating system. This is handy if you work with documents in multiple languages simultaneously, as you do not need to leave your word processor or interrupt your writing flow in order to change the active layout. The on-screen keyboard viewer, which can be displayed or hidden as needed, helps you learn the position of special characters while you get used to a new layout.
Custom keyboard editor
From the Keyman layout editor you can create your own keyboard from scratch, assigning characters, diacritics, dead key sequences and modifier combinations to each of the physical keys. You can even start from an existing layout in the library and modify it to suit your specific needs, adding specific characters that were missing from the original version, or reassigning them elsewhere.
Compatibility and use in professional environments
Keyman is designed to function seamlessly in all Windows applications, including browsers, office suites, code editors, and content management systems. If you want to deploy the same configuration across multiple computers, you can export portable keyboard packages to easily install them on other machines without the need to repeat the entire configuration process. This is especially useful in academic, publishing, or translation environments where typographic consistency across multiple languages is key.
My experience with Keyman
I tried out keyboards in several languages, including English, Spanish, Basque, Japanese, and Arabic. From the library, installing the layouts was easy, and switching between one language and another while typing with a keyboard shortcut was almost instantaneous. I have had no problems working with it in any app I have used for writing.
What I liked most about Keyman and what could be improved
· What I liked most: The huge library of keyboards ready to install instantly and the power of the custom editor, which allows you to create completely new layouts from scratch without the need for advanced technical knowledge.
· What could be improved: The keyboard editor has an initial learning curve that may be somewhat intimidating for users without prior experience in managing complex typographic layouts.
