Hong Kong Identity by Cantoconnection in Hong_Kong

[–]Tree8282 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

i’d say it’s super important bc HK has a lot of history and is has a very unique culture. There’s also a huge overseas population and pretty much defines the cantonese culture (e.g cantonese in english language, food) overseas

at the same time theres more fragmentation as a growing population identifies themselves as “Chinese” and the rest do not associate themselves with Chinese

A Japanese ‘soldier’ broke into Tokyo's Chinese embassy and threatened to kill diplomats, Beijing says by yahoonews in worldnews

[–]Tree8282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially in China, foreign media can’t really confirm this. It’s really just the same as “Trump says Iran talks are going well”. Have to mention the name because they don’t have other sources to verify

How are you preparing for AI replacing your job? by ArmyofDildos in OpenAI

[–]Tree8282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You underestimate the amount of garbage published by verge or wired. Even without AI, journalism has already gone to crap, like for example The Economist or The Guardian spews clickbait titles with no substance.

So i’m guessing you’re also an advocate for completely free drug use including heroin and fentanyl?

Not disagreeing with you, but just pointing out that in a pure public health POV, it should be banned alongside class A drugs.

Why hasn’t the science of economics made more progress in the last 100 years? by DM_Me_Pics1234403 in AskEconomics

i think the other person is saying politics not political theory. Economists can’t get shit done if politicians don’t do it.

Moving from current diets to a diet that excludes animal products can reduce food’s land use by 76% and GHG emissions by 49% by Vegoonmoon in climatechange

It is an option for some, but it’s hard to convince a majority of the population to not eat meat. Humans are designed to eat meat, and throughout years of their own taste and preferences it’s hard to convince everyone to not eat meat. There are also not many high protein non-animal foods/dishes out there that are readily available for people to replace their diet with.

I would think that we would still need to try to research methods of raising livestock sustainably (more efficient livestock feed) or artificially made proteins.

I think your premise on “profit maximising” is slightly misinterpreted. Economists say that firms are profit maximising, while individuals are UTILITY MAXIMISING. There are a lot of different theories in utility, but in the most basic sense, in addition to the financial opportunity cost and the cost of studying medicine, the disutility from being a doctor that period of tough studying is also accounted for in one parameter of utility (for example an economist could add a variable such as overtime hours that has additional negative utility )

So a rational individual would maximise that utility as a whole, including the costs and studying. A irrational individual, would for instance choose being a radiologist over a anaesthetist, given that they are just as happy in either career.

okay i guess you’ve seen someone who minded. My point is that unlike the N word or chink, it doesn’t have a historical undertone that implies a different social standing or is mocking of our language. It’s just a description of pale skin and blue eyes. If some find offence then i won’t say it to them.

A guy I (17f) was texting saw me for the first time in person and said “ew” am I ugly? by [deleted] in amiugly

[–]Tree8282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s much less about exercise than diet. An hour of jogging is around 200 calories, same as a bowl of rice or a small bag of chips. You can try different diet regimens to help with the hunger, like eating 2 meals a day but with a bigger dinner.

How much information does an AI need about the economy to be able to make policies that we trust would as good as law makers? by xingx35 in AskEconomics

[–]Tree8282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re talking about GPT type models, then we’re nowhere close. It’s not even about the amount of data we feed into it, but rather GPT is just a model that fills in the most likely words in the context of an answer to your prompt. So it isn’t able to analyse information and determine whether a policy is good, but rather a search engine that can consolidate different data sources.

But if you’re talking about it taking pure data in terms of numbers then there could easily be an algorithm which gives recommendations based on thresholds, but clearly humans who can evaluate those metrics using different theories and contexts are much better.

Most unis don’t even ask for GRE, so if it’s that much trouble for you i’d say just focus on your application elsewhere
