social.lol Mastodon server upgrade
It’s time for an upgrade! The server that powers our social.lol Mastodon instance is approaching its capacity, so we’re going to do the little hermit-crab-upgrading-its-shell maneuver and hop over into a beefy new server. The new hardware has twice the RAM and 3x the disk space, so we should be pretty comfortable there for the foreseeable future.
This migration will take place on Friday, July 3 at 11 PM EDT / Saturday, July 4 at 3 AM UTC (during our regularly scheduled weekly maintenance window). I’m working hard to minimize the overall downtime, but I also want to manage expectations. So everyone should plan on three hours of downtime (but I think we’ll see less in practice).
As is tradition during larger upgrades, I’ll be hanging out in our IRC server sharing updates and chatting about the process. I’ll also keep our status page updated with progress notes and revised downtime estimates. You can also find me on Signal if you have any questions or need to reach me during the migration.
Thanks for your patience during this (hopefully brief) disruption. Our new setup will be awesome and we’ll all be better off for it!
