Tuesday Magic Item – Flower Shield

7 July, 2026

Safety in bloom.Gollaon and Voddick watched as the warriors marched by, draped with flowers over multi-colored cloth, on a fine spring day.

“It is a lovely display,” said Voddick.

“Life and death, war and peace, all intertwined,” said Gollaon, unusually grave.

“Many will return.”

“And many will not,” said Gollaon. “Today, our years of fighting and watching combat. It wears upon my spirit.”

Voddick nodded. “I understand. There are times I feel the same.”

Flower Shield

These shields are not so much made as grown, consisting of a circular wooden shield covered and surrounded on its face and edges with dozens of blooming flowers.

The Fate of the Small Gods in the Sea of Stars

5 July, 2026

Minor goddesses of the waters in happier timesIn ages past, when the Dragon Empress led her brethren in a successful bid to cast down the gods, a time now known as the Gods War, but not all gods fell before the claws of the gods . . . All know that the Sun and the Moon survived. But in fact many, if not multitudes, of lesser divinities survived as well.

The gods that the dragons sought to engage and destroy were the major gods, the ones that ruled the heavens and earth, the King of the Sky, the Law Lords, the Queen of the Fields, and other such powers. This they did along with their courtiers and guardians, hangers-on and servants; the heavens ran with divine and draconian blood.

But the small gods, gods of place and home, as long as they did not interfere (or were not in the heavens), they were initially ignored. But it was probably the Sundering, the shattering of the world, that caused more damage to the petty gods as their habitats were changed and destroyed. Most of those that survived went into hiding. It was in the aftermath of these great events that some of the dragons started hunting the little gods. The Empress, naturally, did not stoop to such, but many of the other dragons fear that any god, no matter how small, could become a potential threat. Read the rest of this entry »

Beginning this month’s RPG Blog Carnival – Small Gods, Saints, and other minor divinities

1 July, 2026

Lares and sacrificesWelcome to the RPG Blog Carnival for the Month of July 2026, on the theme of Small Gods, Saints, and other minor divinities.

In a mixup of scheduling, Seed of Worlds is also hosting this Carnival! So go look at their thoughts too!  Still, the more the merrier!

In most fantasy worlds, and some other game worlds, there are gods and divine powers capable of great things! But not all matters require the attention of the greatest of beings.

It is these lesser divinities that we will be looking at:

Small Gods, are deities (or subdieties) of minor things or narrow aspects of a greater portfolio. Such as:

Gods of particular rivers or streams, mountains, or other natural features or phenomena.

Minor deities embodying an aspect of a greater gods portfolio, such as the war god Ares‘ sons, Deimos and Phobos, who embodied the Terror and Panic of war.

Deities with a very narrow or small portfolio, such as Hypnos, the god of sleep.

Saints, for this discussion, I am defining as intercessors between the mortal and divine world.

These might be ascended heroes, martyrs to the faith, or liminal beings who will act as a conduit between the world of mortal beings and the realms of the divine.

Minor Divinities, this is a catch-all for all other sorts of divine beings, most of which do not have their own cults but may have a few eccentric people who worship them, and the smallest of gods, such as the Lares, the household guardians of the Romans.

For this Carnival, we will look at these small divinities and intercessors and see how they can be best used to make games and campaigns more interesting.

Some thoughts and ideas:

Towards July and GenCon, June ends

30 June, 2026

Shadowrun room at GenCon 2025July, as most of you will know, was named after Julius Caesar after he adjusted Roman Calendar and created the Julian Calendar, unsurprisingly also named for him. Caesar did like bigging himself up. It is Summer here in my region, but we have not been hit as hard as some others, hope you all are keeping safe.

At the end of the Month, I am off to GenCon which is as early in the year as I can remember.  I will be CHing Shadowrun for Catalyst Game Labs again this year.  But if any of you fine folk will be there and want to meet up, I am sure we can make it happen.

No particular plans for July as far as posting theme goes, but, as usual, let me know if you want to see or discuss anything.

Looking back over June, 2026, it seems to have been a fair month for posts:

Tuesday Magic Item – Wasp Whip

30 June, 2026

Before (and after) they are bound into a whip.Voddick ducked under the buzzing whip.

Gollaon flicked a knife at the whip-wielder, forcing them back momentarily. “We need to get them away from the others!”

“It is difficult! That whip is striking everywhere!” replied Voddick, from behind his shield. “Hound and hares?”

“Hound and hares,” replied Gol;aom, breaking left while Voddick broke right.

Wasp Whip

These whips are made from chains of wasps, angry wasps, compelled by the magic of the whip to flex and strike. The whip emits a low buzz when uncoiled that gets louder as it is used in combat.

HeroesCon, 2026, Sunday

28 June, 2026

For a variety of reasons, among them the desire to do something different and have an adventure, Laura and I headed to Charlotte, NC, and HeroesCon this last Sunday. A fair journey, just over three hours each way, but something new.

It was a brutally hot day but as it was Sunday, it was still pretty easy to get around as the big offices downtown, where the convention center is located, were closed. Parking was convenient, if expensive, in one of the underground parking structures.

Ron Randall, TrekkerThe Charlotte Convention Center is very nice, very modern and clean. Decent food options as well. Check-in was smooth. Unfortunately, by the final day they seemed to be out of paper programs and the website is nearly useless when accessed by phone, but as it there is only one very large dealer’s hall and a handful of seminar rooms, it was not so bad.

We made the trek specifically to catch up with Ron Randall, author/artist of the Trekker series, who we know from a lifetime ago when we lived in Portland, OR. Ron was a regular at the Portland Comic Cons and we always visited him. HeroesCon is one of the few (and the only one this) of the shows he does on the East Coast. It was nice to catch up with him and talk comics for a bit.

Tuesday Magic Item – Ogre Skull Helm

23 June, 2026

Which path is bestGollaon and Voddick watched the skull-masked guards troop by as people scattered in front of them.

“I have not seen such helms in many a year,” whispered Voddick.

“Nor I and I would have been happy to keep it that way,” hissed Gollaon.

“Agreed,” said Voddick. “Things are worse here than we thought.”

“Yes, we had best be moving before they notice us.”

Ogre Skull Helm

These helms are exactly what you would expect, made from the skull of an ogre lined and reinforced with metal and leather. While ogre bone is not as strong as that of their larger brethren, it is still dense and tough even before it is further enchanted. The helm is as protective as a metal full helm while not limiting the senses of the wearer at all.

Ogri, Hill Giants, and Cyclopsians (RPG Blog Carnival)

18 June, 2026

It is a matter of scaleA new month, a new RPG Blog Carnival hosted this month by Advantage on Arcana with this month’s theme being Cyclopes, Ettins, Hill Giants, and Ogres.

Such beings often come to us via stories, and game rules, as unthinking and destructive brutes but that is underestmating them. While they are not the brightest of beings they are not mindless and they can be quite cunning.

Let us look at each in turn:

Tuesday Magic Item – Harrying Blades of the Giant Killers

16 June, 2026

A blade on a pole is an effective weaponGollaon and Voddick enjoyed the supper and the story of how, in ages pasts, the four sons and two daughters of the clan chief had worked together to fight a giant that had been making depredations upon the village.

The six of them worked together, striking and withdrawing, never letting the giant have a moment’s respite as they attacked from one side and then the other. Slowly wearing their huge enemy down and then they closed in for the kill. The giant lay dead, the village was saved!

From their enemy, they took his crudely forged sword and the village smith reforged it into a bladed weapon for each of the six siblings. Legend says it was three swords, two long spears, and a glaive. But half of them have been lost, all the village has left are a sword, spear, and glaive.

Harrying Blades of the Giant Killers

These weapons were all made by the same hand and while well-made they are not beautiful but they are durable. The swords have grips of carved giant bone and the pole arms have fittings made of the same material.
