space4 IS PART OF Outlandish,
a tech worker-cooperative committed to creating social and economic change.

We build websites, data dashboards, and digital campaigns for the likes of Greenpeace, the National Education Union, the BBC and more. As a cooperative we embed cooperative values into everything we do – meaning that our work is guided by a sense of social justice, equal collaboration, and economic redistribution.

Our Values

We’re here to make Community Wealth Building a reality. We take that really seriously. It’s in our DNA as a cooperative business and its our commitment to Islington Council. That’s how we’ve generated 2.7 million (and counting) in social value to date.

We’re environmental friendly

  • We run a refill station for our members
  • We have secure bike storage
  • We recycle all our batteries and printer inks
  • Our space is home to a jungle of plants
  • We recycle our electronics with Back Online, around the corner from us
  • We recycle food, furniture, electronics and crockery with our network of coops and charities using A Good Thing, Olio and Islington’s Voluntary Action network.

We care about our supply chain

  • We order all our supplies from Suma coop
  • We buy fair-trade tea and coffee
  • Our community lunch comes from independent local restaurants – our favourites include Roti Joupa and Stuff’d
  • Our cleaning products come from Janitorial Express, a local Islington business
  • We buy our toilet paper from clean sheets to support social movements

We’re actually inclusive

  • We offer payment-in-kind and sliding payment scales to people who need it
  • We offer free period products
  • We have a baby changing station
  • We are fully wheelchair accessible
  • We’re 24-hour access space built on trust
  • We have a quarterly members meeting for users input on our decision-making

We’re an ethical business

  • We’re a living wage employer
  • Our pay ratio is 3:1
  • We’re 50% BAME and women owned
  • We use Sociocracy to organise our business

Our STORY

In 2016 we co-founded a UK-wide network of cooperative tech businesses called Co-Tech to use our collective experience, skills, resources and knowledge to radically increase the market share of companies that are owned and run by their workers.

We quickly realised, that there were no physical spaces for cooperatives or people interested in progressive tech to gather and collaborate. That’s when Polly joined Outlandish to set up SPACE4.

In 2017 when we first opened SPACE4 we were focused on the tech-for-good sector and cooperatives. However since opening, our community has grown from strength to strength hosting a wide range of progressive organisations and events.

In 2018 Founders and Coders, a free and socially-oriented coding school, joined. We also hired Maddy to support Polly in running the space.

In 2019 we moved up the road to a bigger and better space, thanks to Islington Council and their support for cooperatives and democratic ownership. We pioneered their Affordable Workspace programme, supporting them to deliver on their Community Wealth Building strategy and innovating on their use of the TOMs social value matrix.

In 2021, Islington asked us to run a programme of Cooperative Development Support for the borough. We delivered ‘Cooperate Islington’ – an 18-month programme of business support including £80k of grant money so that cooperatives had the skills, network and capacity to grow their businesses into the local economy.

In 2022 we were awarded a two-year grant by the Disrupt Foundation to deliver a programme of public education. We hired another member of staff, Natasha, as Events and Partnerships Coordinator. We are now home to a thriving events programme with 3+ events a week bringing over 2k people into our space every year.

In 2025 we wanted to do more to support Islington residents into employment. So in collaboration with W.O. Consultancy we established our weekly digital inclusion job club.

And now in 2026 we’re working with workers.coop federation to run a business accelerator programme for early stage worker coops.
