Left 4 Dead 2 is one of those childhood masterpieces for me. So many years have passed, yet after finishing it once with my elementary school friends, again with my middle school friends, and then once more with my high school friends, I still find myself completely hooked every time.

Plenty of multiplayer games claims teamwork as their selling point, but in reality they're often just palyers shooting enemies together. In L4D2, the feeling of cooperation comes from countless subtle design decisions. That's why even after more than a decade, we've seen countless games try to follow in its footsteps, yet none have truly matched it, not even Turtle Rock's own Back 4 Blood.

Every Special Infected in L4D2 is designed around a single goal: breaking up the team. Whether it's a Smoker dragging someone away, a Hunter pinning someone to the ground, or a Jockey steering you off course, they're all trying to scatter the group. Even the Tank exists to force everyone out of position. But that's where Valve's brilliance lies, because once after creating chaos, the game immediately creates opportunities for cooperation. Pulling teammates out of danger and covering for each other in the middle of that chaos is what really drives the game forward.

On top of that, Valve kept both the learning curve and the communication barrier incredibly low. There's no need to pick a class or spend time putting together a build before each match—you simply choose a character and jump in. Even the selection of weapons and items is intentionally straightforward (something Back 4 Blood could've learned from). Because of that, there's very little players actually need to communicate, while the gameplay is also very straightforward, so it's easy for anyone to pick up. Combined with the AI Director, which keeps the pacing feeling almost as tightly controlled as a linear campaign despite every run playing out differently, the game is constantly throwing memorable moments at you.

That's exactly why I've been able to finish L4D2 over and over again with so many friends, including plenty who had barely played PC games before. Maybe that's L4D2's greatest achievement as a co-op game: making sure everyone, regardless of experience, can have an amazing time together.

This game is one of my fav games of all time, it's endless replyability and the AI directors makes it so much fun to come back to, the visuals hold up pretty well despite being an "old" game, the hostile community of PvP game modes can be bothersome to deal with but you do find some amazing people in those modes!
