Tilt Guard is a security and privacy app designed to protect your screen from prying eyes when you use your smartphone or tablet in public places. To do so, the app completely darkens your screen the moment someone tries to read over your shoulder, preventing strangers from seeing your conversations, photos, or passwords on the bus or in the office.
Automatic dimming by tilting
Tilt Guard doesn't change the physical characteristics of your screen; instead, in tilt mode, it uses motion sensors to darken it. When you activate this mode, the app continuously monitors your device's position; if you notice someone getting too close or trying to snoop, simply turn or tilt your smartphone to one side. By default, at 250 ms, the system reacts to that angle change and deploys a black layer that hides everything you were viewing, keeping your data safe without requiring you to lock the device or close the app you were using. Mind you, you won't be able to see the content yourself, but at least no one else will either.
Manual control and background playback
In addition to the automatic mode, there's a very useful manual option, activated by a small floating button you can place anywhere on the screen. When you press this eye-shaped icon, the screen turns completely black. This feature is incredibly useful if you want to listen to music playlists, videos, or podcasts on platforms that don't normally allow background playback; by manually darkening the screen with this app, the video keeps playing, you save a lot of battery life, and you prevent yourself from accidentally pressing buttons while you walk.
Active screen mode and customization
To complement its daily use, this system includes a "Wake-Lock" mode that prevents your smartphone from going to sleep or turning off automatically due to inactivity. This is ideal whenever you're monitoring the progress of a long task in another app and need the screen to stay on. You can customize the screen timeout and adjust the angle at which the screen dims.
My experience with Tilt Guard
For a couple of days, I used this app while traveling on public transportation to test its effectiveness. I activated automatic mode and adjusted the sensitivity to medium; when I pretended someone was looking at my screen and turned my wrist slightly, the panel went black almost instantly, hiding my messages perfectly. I also tested the floating manual control while listening to a long video; I pressed the eye button and put the device in my pocket, which allowed the audio to continue playing without issues and without registering accidental taps from the fabric of my pants. The floating bar is barely noticeable, and you can easily drag it to a corner where it won't interrupt your regular use.
What I liked most about Tilt Guard and what could be improved
· What I liked the most: the immediacy with which the tilt sensor darkens the screen and how useful the manual button is for listening to videos with the screen off, which saves battery.
· What could be improved: finding the right sensor sensitivity level requires some trial and error, since if you set it too high, the screen constantly dims whenever you move.
