Last Day of the Year Skywatch

I read that we are supposed to have a Blue Moon tonight (this was taken looking away from the sun)

I was able to capture the colors but not the rays of light that were shining down Actually I took these last night. There is an open field with trees at the far end it. The trees block the setting sun but not it's beauty. For the bottom photo I set my camera to blur most of the trees hoping that the other worldly colors of the sky would work well with the muted silhouettes of the trees.

I would now like to thank all of the wonderful friends that have visited my blogs. I've been doing this for less than a year and it's far more rewarding than I ever could have imagined.

Waiting and Skywatching

Yesterday I took my car in to get serviced and while I waited I walked around Newtown taking pictures. Here are a couple of them.

Also I would like to thank everyone who participated in Weekend Reflections and remind those who are interested that Friday is once again Weekend Reflections time. It's so nice to see all of the cool and creative reflection photos.

Empty Cemetery Skywatch

The statue seems to be juggling three clouds of of them has a jet inside.

Around the base of the statue is the biblical verse "Luke 1:45" was written in a translation that I'm not familiar with.

While taking a drive on Sunday I spotted a huge gated entryway with a road that wound up a hill. There was beautiful green grass on both sides, and at the top of the hill was a statue of either Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, or Mary the mother of Jesus. The gate was open so I went in. There was a house on the other side of the hill but I seemed to be the only person in this expansive green area. I took a few pictures and as I left I noticed that it was the spot for a future cemetery. Which made perfect sense.

There was plenty of beautiful blue sky all around.

Triple Philadelphia Eagle Skywatch

The eagle and lamp strut their stuff in front of a beautiful Philadelphia sky. These are three views of part of the bridge that I was standing on when I took these pictures. The eagle is the national bird of the United States, and Philadelphia was the birthplace of the United States, so images of eagles can be found all over the city. Philadelphia's NFL football team is also called the Eagles.

This shot is straight out of the camera, not even any cropping. I came to this spot and just knew that this would be a shot that I would like. I love reflections. One of these days I should start a reflections meme.

Skywatching at 18th Street (100th Post)

Hello everyone, This has been a very busy few days, but it has yielded lots of Philadelphia pictures. I took this one on Monday, and I spent most of Wednesday at Philadelphia's Chinatown where I found a surprise around almost every corner. I'm now featuring some of the Chinatown pictures on my Something Sighted blog.

Thanks for the comments and advise regarding my blur problem. I'll probably get around to figuring out how to size the pictures correctly someday. :-) I did notice that they still look better when enlarged.

I just noticed that this is my 100th post. Thanks for all of the support and great comments. I look forward to the next hundred.

North vs South

This is the Smith Civil War Memorial in Philadelphia's Fairmont park.

Fairmont is the park that just keeps on giving. (things to photograph)

The Memorial was erected between 1897 and 1912 under a bequest of Richard Smith. Among the military and naval men immortalized here are Generals Hancock, McClellan, Meade, Reynolds, and Admirals Porter and Dahlgren.

It looks like the heroes of the South are on the left and the heroes of the North are on the right.

I was surprised by the size of this monument, it's really tall and very impressive.

Turtle Rock Light

This light house is right next to the Viking statue on Boathouse Row , and was built in 1887 to aid traffic on the Schuylkill River.

Looking up in Philadelphia

Once again it's time for Skywatch Friday. I love taking pictures of interesting things with a beautiful sky in the background. This week I present part of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. Some of the middle fence posts seem to be pointing to the train headed for Camden New Jersey.

The bottom picture is the color version of William Penn and his Pigeons. I can't imagine what William or Benjamin would think of the colossal bridge or the speeding train in the picture above him.

I've noticed that it's not easy to get an unobstructed view of the sky in Philadelphia. I'm okay with that since there are so many interesting things to see.

Cross and Carillon meet the Sky

I always notice this carillon when I pass by, so yesterday I decided to stop and get a few pictures. The plaque said that it was donated to the church in 1929. I took these just before a heavy rain storm.

Obstructed View

I can imagine the statue saying "who's bright idea was it to block my view with these buildings" Even so there is still plenty of beautiful Philadelphia sky to be seen.

Do to computer problems I haven't been able to post or comment very much over the past few days, but I just got a new computer so after my long weekend away I should be back and ready to go on Monday.

Close Encounters of the Skywatch Kind

Last evening I went for a walk around Newtown and after a while I noticed some amazing, beautiful orange clouds.

I could barely see the setting sun due to obstructions like power lines, trees, houses and other buildings, but the aura from the sunset was so fantastic that people were coming out of their homes and watching.

Thankfully I had my camera and took lots of pictures, but they really don't do justice to the incredible site.

Today I'm posting the strangest looking cloud formation that I can remember seeing.

I saw this just when it looked like the show was about over.

You may disagree, but to me it looks just like an orange alien-type head that's looking to the right. It has large eyes and a very pronounced chin , even a nose and lips.

Stormy skies over Philadelphia

I took these just after a big thunderstorm passed over the Philadelphia art museum(where I'm standing). I think the odd angles of the building in the distance look pretty cool.
