Today I am signing off as the Secretary of Education, my dream job. What I used to tell my students on the last day of school is that this isn’t goodbye, but rather a celebration of our time together. This is the same, here are some things I’m celebrating today. 🧵1/6

Right now, families spend roughly $8,600/year on average to send their kids to pre-K. Under @POTUS’ #BuildBackBetter Act – the cost is $0.

To address the teacher shortage issue, we must address the teacher respect issue in our country. We must stop normalizing providing teachers with inadequate resources to be successful.

If you support eliminating the Department of Education, you do not support our students. Period. @usedgov provides funding for: ✅Students w/ disabilities ✅Rural students ✅Programs that make college affordable This would be bad for students, and bad for America.

Beginning today, applicants and others seeking relief through the Biden-Harris Administration's Student Debt Relief Plan will begin receiving updates. Don’t worry if you don’t get an email today - more are coming.

Today’s temporary decision does not stop the Biden Administration’s efforts to provide borrowers the opportunity to apply for debt relief nor does it prevent us from reviewing the millions of applications we have received.

It was great getting to catch up with @ChrisEvans & @MarkKassen for another @ASP chat. We talked reopening, keeping students safe, and a lot more.

We need a Department of Education that is focused first and foremost on our students. My commitment to you is that the agency I lead will be a service agency and our mission will be the success of America's students.

Let me be clear, a lock on a school door is no match for an AR-15. We must ban assault weapons.

My name is Miguel, but a lot of my teachers called me Michael. In 7th grade I finally had the courage to tell my principal that I’d like to be called by the name that my Latino parents gave me -- Miguel, not Michael. To any student that is reading this, your identity matters.

The Hill We Climb by @TheAmandaGorman, the poem read at the inauguration, is clearly suitable for all ages. This is getting silly.

Teaching isn’t a job you hold. It’s an extension of your life’s purpose.

Thanks to the American Rescue Plan, teachers in Puerto Rico have started to receive a $1,000 A MONTH salary increase. Let’s see more states & districts get this done for our teachers!
