Marlene is I-No's beloved[1] electric guitar as well as a recurring weapon in the Guilty Gear series. Always in her possession, she uses to perform her musical pieces or to attack her foes.

Design[]

Visually, Marlene is an almost direct replica of the real-life Duesenberg Starplayer TV electric guitar, featuring arched top and back, bent sides and a 647mm scale. Its semi-hollow mahogany body is lacquered mostly in surf-green, while the headstock and neck's underside is of a light brown. One major difference with its real-life counterpart is the black question mark-like symbol on the body.

Story[]

The origins of this electric guitar are unknown. Nicknamed "Marlene", it has come to be I-No's second most important possession.[2]

Following the events of G4, it is currently in the possession of Axl Low who took Marlene away from I-No during the final battle in her ascent to godhood.

Trivia[]

I-No uses Marlene as a weapon to defeat her foes, both during performances and during battle.[1] It is unknown if it possesses any magical properties, or if it is simply a conduit for I-No's spells. Nevertheless, she employs it in both magical and physical attacks, strumming it to produce damaging sound waves or slamming it on her opponents. She also uses it for flight, riding it like a witch's broom during her unique Hover Dash.

Allusions[]

  • Similarly to other aspects of I-No's design, Marlene is likely a reference to a surf-green Duesenberg Starplayer TV[3] called "Dietrich" that id owned by Ringo Sheena,[4] whom series creator Daisuke Ishiwatari is a fan of.[5]
    • Like its source of inspiration, Marlene is named after German-American actress Marlene Dietrich.
