It's time to RTO

It's hard to think it's all for the best when you just signed the lease on an apartment 45 minutes away from the office you now have to return to. Some things we can't predict, and sadly, we simply have to adjust to. I don't think the company was basing its decisions on what would be suitable for every employee, but more on what was more suitable for the company itself, obviously. That's what every company does. Not because they're inherently evil but because it's kinda impossible to be suitable for everybody. I don't know how big the company this employee is a part of is, but if it's small, he can very well have a chance to discuss things.

Why would you expect someone to do something for you if, in the moment, you could have done it for them, you decided not to do it?

If you had a friend that you even considered your BEST FRIEND, and when their wedding came, they not only did not pick you as their maid of honor, but they also started using you as one without inviting you to the bridal shower or anything. Would you still be friends with them? I don't think so. The story below has some sad parts, as every story about a falling out between friends, but I think that the most awful part was the fact that the friend who got married first decided to take advantage of the user telling the story. Which simply proves that she was never a good friend indeed.

The first bride wasn't only a bad friend. She was also an entitled mean girl. She saw the opportunity to take advantage of multiple people at the same time to get what she wanted, and she took it. She used people she knew had money as her bridesmaids so they would organize and pay for a really expensive bridal shower. Then she used her best friend as some kind of servant that helped her organize the wedding without even inviting her to be one of the bridesmaids.

What a good thing karma is. This annoying bride got exactly what she deserved. No bridal shower, nobody helping her out at the wedding planning, a stressful wedding party, and the loss of a really good friend. If she just asked her best friend to be her maid of honor, she would have had a great party before the wedding, some help with all the planning, and would have also been the maid of honor of her best friend during her wedding. Now she's not even invited to the wedding of her oldest friend. And she deserves it. I really love the stories where people get exactly what they deserved. She tried to use people and got payback instantly. Next time, try being a nice person, and maybe things won't turn out so bad.

Years ago, robot vacuums were considered cutting-edge. Now, we’ve entered a new era of home automation: robot lawn mowers. For those who spend a significant chunk of time on this task or hire a lawn care service monthly or weekly, an automated mower can be worth the admittedly high upfront cost, often paying for itself in just a few runs. Right now, the Neomow X SE Robot Lawn Mower is $700 off  with an on-page coupon, bringing the price down to $1,499 (originally $2,199).

Unlike some robotic mowers that require a perimeter wire or RTK antenna, the Neomow X SE  has a wire-free setup that makes installation faster than many similar models on the market. Like a robot vacuum, it uses 3D LiDAR SLAM and AI vision for accurate mapping and obstacle avoidance, allowing it to navigate complex landscaping, shaded areas, and even mow at night. Front-wheel drive, all-terrain wheels let it climb over obstacles up to 1.6 inches high, and it supports 4G, wifi, and Bluetooth connectivity. It also features GPS anti-theft tracking and an IPX5 waterproof rating, making it safe for sprinkler exposure and rainy days.

The Neomow X SE is powered by a 13Ah battery that delivers up to 2 hours of runtime. It can handle up to 0.75 acres and has an adjustable cutting height (around 1.2–3.3 inches). Its floating cutting deck adapts to uneven ground and includes an anti-clog barrier that prevents grass clippings from building up. Users can customize their mowing schedule on an app and customize up to 40 working zones, as well as define no-go areas like pools or flower beds.

While it still has a high price tag, this discount makes it much more competitive with similar high-end robot mowers. If you’ve been holding off because you don’t want to deal with burying wires or installing an antenna, the Neomow X SE Robot Lawn Mower is a smart buy. For homeowners with medium-to-large yards (especially those already paying for a mowing service), it could save both time and money season after season.

Siri AI is the biggest feature of Apple's upcoming suite of updates. Whether you're running iOS 27, macOS 27, or even watchOS 27, the thing that you'll likely notice first (assuming you're running a compatible device) is that Siri is much smarter now, and even more capable than it was in previous versions. If the beta previews have been any indication, this really is the biggest upgrade Apple has ever given Siri.

But it seems that the company isn't limiting itself to the upgrades it already announced. As it continues beta testing these new updates, and with them, Siri AI itself, Apple seems to be tinkering with its new AI-powered assistant, quietly planting new features that beta testers need to discover for themselves. One such feature? A new Siri AI menu that appears whenever you highlight text in macOS 27.

How Siri AI's hidden menu works in macOS 27

As reported by MacRumors, this new menu appears whenever you select text in macOS 27. When you do, you'll see a floating menu in the top left of your highlighted text. If you move your cursor over it, the menu expands to reveal options, such as "Proofread," "Rewrite," "How does this sound?" and "Edit with Siri." You can also ask Siri AI to pull out key points from the text, or summarize it completely. Depending on the text, you might see other options, too: If you highlight a text from a friend, Siri AI might show you contact info; if the text contains a date, Siri AI might prompt you to create a Calendar entry. It plays into Siri AI's contextual awareness, which is part of Apple's mission to make its assistant more useful in specific scenarios.

The thing is, this menu is disabled by default, as least as of macOS 27 developer beta 3 and public beta 1. Apple did not include it in the release notes, either; instead, a Redditor stumbled upon it, and shared instructions for turning it on on r/MacOSBeta.

How to enable Siri AI's menu in macOS 27

Keep in mind, this feature, as with macOS 27 as a whole, is in beta testing. MacRumors says that the feature does not always work, so you may run into odd bugs or glitches after turning it on. Still, if you're already running the beta and are curious, this is an interesting feature to explore.

To try it out, you'll need to open your Mac's Terminal app. Then, paste and run the following command: sudo mkdir -p /Library/Preferences/FeatureFlags/Domain && sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/FeatureFlags/Domain/WritingTools LightweightUI_macOS -dict Enabled -bool true

You'll need to restart your Mac for the feature to take effect. But once you do, you should see the menu whenever you highlight text—albeit with some possible hiccups. If the feature is too unstable at this point, or you simply don't like it, you can undo it by pasting the following command into Terminal: sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/FeatureFlags/Domain/WritingTools LightweightUI_macOS -dict Enabled -bool false

What does a workplace "red flag" look like to you? It turns out, they're difficult to decipher.

College is never easy, not for students, nor for teachers, but everybody gives their best to finally get their well-earned degree. Administrators and advisors play a fundamental role in all students' lives. They guide them and help them with all the tedious bureaucratic paperwork. They're there for us and keep the motors running. Without them, everything would be a lot more chaotic than it already is.

Us students, value these helpers very much throughout our studious lifetime. That's why it's even more disappointing to see the educational institution, itself, work against its own students. Redditor u/mods-begone was not only underappreciated, but also overworked by his superiors. They diminished him, spoke ill of him right to his face, used him like a scapegoat, and so much more. And the red flags were there from the beginning!  The day he started working for that department, SIX PEOPLE had already resigned.

It is more than justified for him to leave that place and find a position that is best suited for his character and abilities. One with bosses who are actually professionals and don't have the need to diminish the people who help them. One would think that, since they're all college-educated people, they would have better manners and be actually reasonable. However, as life makes sure to teach us, people oftentimes don't meet the minimum criteria for human decency and basic understanding of social rules. This Redditor realized he would never get out of that poor workplace with that kind of attitude. Plus, he still has his whole career ahead of him.

How Sore Is Too Sore After a Workout?

It’s normal to feel sore after your first day of a new workout, but maybe you’ve heard horror stories of people who ended up in the hospital after they destroyed themselves with a super intense workout. Chances are, your soreness is normal, but here’s how to know.

What normal muscle soreness feels like

DOMS, or delayed onset muscle soreness, usually shows up the day after a hard workout. The more severe it is, the longer it will last, often peaking 48 to 72 hours after the workout. A mild case will just leave you feeling a little sore for a day or two; a rougher one might have you wincing when you walk down stairs for most of a week.

The feeling can range from a dull ache to a burning pain. It will feel the most uncomfortable when you’re contracting the sore muscle, especially if you’ve been sitting still for a while. You might wake up thinking oh god, everything hurts, but once you get up and walk around, you’ll probably feel a bit better.

If you go back to the gym during this time—which you should!—you’ll find that you can still do the same exercises but might find that the soreness makes it harder to do them with as much weight or for as many reps as the first time around.

As a bonus, though, a bout of soreness protects you from getting sore the next time. It’s called the “delayed bout effect,” and you can take advantage of it by showing up to your next workout even if you’re not feeling totally back to normal. DOMS only crops up after new or extremely intense workouts, so once your body is used to a particular exercise, you won’t get a serious case of DOMS anytime soon.

What if it’s rhabdomyolysis?

There is an extreme type of muscle soreness that can cause serious health complications, and it’s called rhabdomyolysis, or “rhabdo” for short. In rhabdo, you have so much damage to your muscles that your body, and especially your kidneys, can’t handle the resulting metabolic waste products that end up in your bloodstream.

That said, it’s not very common. If you just did a new workout and you feel sore all over, it’s far more likely that you have a bad case of DOMS. To give you an idea of how rare, this study found 29 cases over a period of four years (2010-2014) in one of New York City’s hospitals. Since it’s just one hospital, there must have been more cases in the city in those years than just 29; but on the other hand, that’s still a teeny-tiny fraction of people who exercise.

But rhabdo does happen. And because it happens more frequently in absolute beginners who go too hard than in experienced athletes (who presumably know when to stop pushing themselves), you may be facing your first bout of extreme soreness and not knowing whether you’re unusually sore or not.

Who gets rhabdo?

Exercise-induced rhabdo—which, again, is rare—is more likely to occur in people who:

  • Are dehydrated.

  • Exercise in extreme heat.

  • Do an extreme intensity or amount (or both) of exercise in one workout.

  • Are new to exercise and push themselves really hard.

  • Are taking certain medications, including ibuprofen or other NSAIDS.

Besides hard workouts, rhabdomyolysis can also occur as a complication from injuries that damage a lot of muscle tissue, and from some medications or other health conditions. The symptoms to watch out for, according to the CDC, can happen anytime in the days following the workout and include:

  • Severe muscle pain, weakness, and swelling.

  • Dark urine (“tea- or cola-colored”).

  • Extreme fatigue.

If you have these symptoms, seek medical care right away. That may mean going to the emergency room or urgent care. Once you’re there, a blood test can confirm whether you have rhabdo, and you can get the care you need to make sure you don’t end up with kidney damage or other serious problems. The CDC says to make sure you are getting tests for creatine kinase or creatine phosphokinase, ideally repeated over the course of hours or days.

What to do if you’re just sore

Besides making sure not to skip your next workout, we have a few tips for you. The bad news is that nothing will make DOMS go away; you have to recover. And to recover, you need sleep and food and time.

But while you’re waiting it out, a few things might help you feel better. Moving around helps, so go for a walk or consider a light cardio workout. Massage can feel good, so get someone to massage you or do some self-massage with a foam roller or a lacrosse ball.

Some people find stretching helps, but make sure not to stretch too hard, which can damage your muscles further. I like to take a hot bath or use a heating pad. (Driving in a car with heated seats is a delight after a workout that uses your back and hamstrings.) And, as always, seek medical care for anything that feels particularly concerning. An article on the internet can’t tell you whether you’re seriously injured or just a little sore, but an actual doctor can.

Today we went to Leighton House, the former residence of Lord Frederic Leighton (1830-1896), the renowned painter and sculptor, which is in Kensington, London.  The house was built between 1866 and 1895, and it had an extension on the left-hand side in 1869–70 and was added to again in 1889.

The house only had one bedroom, as it was chiefly used as a studio for Leighton to paint, discuss commissions with clients, entertain his friends and fellow artists and display his artwork. Consequently, on his death, it was very difficult to sell the property, and it was first opened to the public in 1929.

We've both been to Leighton House many times, and I've probably been slightly more often than Mr Cee, as I've been to see a lot of exhibitions.  The reason we went today is that they had a 1/12th scale model of the house, highlighting three of the main decorative rooms, including the fantastic Arab Hall, the Narcissus Hall, the staircase and the Silk Room.   The model must have cost thousands to make, and this was the last day it was available to see, having been on loan for a few days.

Under the cut are photos of the model and some of the same rooms we looked around in the actual house.

We couldn't even speculate how much it cost to produce such an artwork. The model makers are Mulvany and Rogers, who have been making models of historic houses for 30 years. You can see more of their astonishing work on their website.

In addition to the tour and the chance to see the model of Leighton House, we also saw a small exhibition of what inspired Frederic Leighton to create the Arab Hall in the first place. A few photos under the cut.

It was a fabulous visit, and we really enjoyed learning more about the Arab Hall and seeing such a wonderful model of Leighton House. We enjoyed a fabulous lunch in a nearby restaurant and then headed home in the sunshine!

It's been a while since I did one of these.

HOME: still revamping my "Do ALL The Things" list and hoping to make progress - see below.

HEALTH: finished phased return but now working 4 day weeks to 20 August to use up annual leave. Have also booked time off from 20 August to 31st August and may take 1-6 September too - again need to use annual leave (likely to be a week in London and a week in Wales).

LIFE ADMIN: caught up with some forgotten payments and a couple of parking tickets (curse ANPR). Did a credit card switcheroo before expiry of balance transfer offers so all debt is 0% and on track to be paid off. Sinking funds looking good and only major bills upcoming is cat insurance renewal. Sorting pensions on back burner until decluttering done - which should reveal where I stashed all the paperwork!

DIGITAL DECLUTTER: JFC cannot catch a break here! Phone is full - need to look at killing some apps and re ieejng whats burning through my storage space. Emails (2 main1 fan related gmails) went out of control, now a bit more back under control but still apparently subbed to too many lists. Big unsubbing exercise coming. Staying on top of transferring To Keep items from tablet to dropbox.

GARDENING/ALLOTMENTING: Ive done nothing on garden or allotments since late April/early May. Committee have given me a pass on cultivation of allotment as long as I strim/weed/prep for next season which is fair. Back/front gardens plan to tidy by end of August and plant up for winter.

COOKING/EATING: I lived on takeaways the 6 weeks I was off work - no spoons for cooking/food prep. Proving a difficult habit to break but some progress being made.

READING/LISTENING: still readingepic amounts of Heated Rivalry fanfic. Barely scratching the surface and most of what I've read is sooooooo good. I've broken my own rule multiple times and am reading so many WIPs.

WATCHING: caught up on a lot of viewing when off. Up to date on summer shows. Enjoying The Vampire Lestat. Trying not to get involved with new series!

CREATING/LEARNING: have been back to crochet club for last two weeks. Getting close to finishing granny's quare bag projects (small bag and project bag). All square finished just need to join, linebags and create handles.

CATS: all good. They're both being super affectionate at the moment. Cuddles all the time.

VOLUNTEERING: missed the last committee meeting but we're in a low activity phase until September when we have end of season BBQ and start work days again.

SOCIALISING: this was a while back but Steve Carlson came over for his annual West Hampstead UK gig on 27 June so got to hang with [personal profile] gingerpig and do a bit of crowd and autograph management. Put in a request that he sing one of his old songs "Chloe Bowed Her Head" an all time fave of mine- which he did mid gig. Ta Steve! Stayed overnight with [personal profile] gingerpig in a perfectly located airbnb and had a fab post gig/full English brekkie Sunday morning before we toddled off on separate journey's home. Was supposed to be meeting Heated Rivalry pals yesterday for a reading event (Tonsil Hockey) alas I picked up a stomach bug from somewhere so stayed home.

WORK: our temp office space is hot but not unbearable, being off for 6 weeks put the wind up everyone so additional support is still happening, allotment software well on the way to being purchased and I have at least 3 people checking that I'm not working late - hold this space!

Super glad to be working a day week this coming week but it will be a busy one - combo of courses, inspections and appeals means I only have Wednesday for admin. So plan to be in the office all week. Friday will be cleaning the flat and crochet club whi h should mean time for the garden and allotment at the weekend.
