Weekly proof of life: veggies and (*gasps*) Fluevog success???
Jul. 18th, 2026 01:30 pmReading: No change. (Still working on Ruffage and The Gate of the Feral Gods.)
Watching: A few more episodes of Widow's Bay. Three to go!
Foodstuffs: Farmshare, week 3: 1 green cabbage, 2 cucumbers (1 unagi, 1 Demeter), garlic scapes, fennel, carrots, and cherries. It turns out that'll be our final visit to that location; the farm/market we're supporting is about to finish their 700-meter move and will hopefully be back to business as usual in the new space as of Wednesday. (I say "finishing" their move because they already moved a bunch of fridge/freezer stuff sometime in the last couple of weeks.)
We cooked a couple of veggies via How to Cook Everything (tenth anniversary edition) this week.
scruloose used the oven-braised celery recipe for the celeriac root, and then yesterday I (I!) baked individually foil-wrapped beets in the toaster oven.
The beets had gotten a bit sprouty and rooty, but were still nice and firm and looked fine; they also may have been slightly overcooked, as the recipe was for medium or large beets with a time range of 45 to 90 minutes, and these got about 40 minutes. I mention all these details because I hated them, so I was hoping I'd gotten something wrong, but when
scruloose got home and tried one, they reported liking it fine and that it was about what they would've expected. (They got a sweet note that I didn't. Different taste detection? Difference between individual beets? Different because the one I tried was still warm and
scruloose's was out of the fridge?)
I'll still take it as successfully cooking, however basic the recipe.
Materialism: I don't think I've remembered to mention that I FINALLY (on the fourth try, I think, over several years) managed to spend my store credit with Fluevog. I've been eyeing these boots for a good couple of years now and the current sale is, I think, the first time they've ever gone on sale, so I risked it. I'm trying not to buy shoes with any heel to speak of anymore (and also, I basically never go out? So getting these is really kind of ridiculous? But look at them), but I was hoping that they'd work out since the actual rise between parts of the foot is relatively minimal...and they fit and I love them. I haven't actually worn them out of the house yet, and I think they'll take some breaking in (I really hope that works well), but it's hard to say for sure since my feet find basically all footwear uncomfortable these days.
I love them. If they ever get released in an amazing purple, I will be so screwed. (The only colorways they've had besides the orange are the pink you can still see and black. The fact that the black isn't there anymore makes me wonder if they're being phased out.)

and now begins six weeks of time where all I need to do is rest <3
Jul. 18th, 2026 08:16 amhm didn't intend it to be this long since the last post, but! so it goes sometimes.
I think that this gets to more interesting and exciting things as it goes on, but I'm biased. xD (tl;dr: the last bit of this post is about sign-ups opening for
hafnia's new D&D campaign and I'm hype and want more people to join if they're interested in D&D!)
1.
Heat domes suck and I spent most of the heat dome period with migraines and thus quite out of it.
2.
My birthday was earlier this month! My twin happened to be nearby because he was visiting a friend of his, and once he was reminded that this visit was a week before our birthday he extended his stay so that we could meet up on our birthday. (He's still on his visit, actually, because he's enjoying hanging out with that group of people so much and doesn't have any need to return to the west coast where he usually is.)
It's been a year since we were last in the same place, and it was good to see him again. Went to a natural history museum, got food, saw mutual friends. A nice day trip for me.
3.
taggle happened! I created 16 things for it, which I'll link after creator reveals. Overall a good creative time, if not the best timing for me personally. Looking forward to next year.
4.
Readercon also happened! I was only out there on Saturday, but it's always a good time and nice to see friends.
( chatter about panels under the cut! )
I also picked up some anti-AI pins from the Clarkesworld booth, since they were handing them out for free, and gave one to my friend who was also there and managed to look at all the vendor tables except that one. xD It was very important to me that they have one because I sometimes feel like half of their job is trying to tell people why using AI in academic contexts is foolish.
Also fun: As I was leaving, being spotted by someone who recognised where my shirt was from (Friends at the Table, c/W mecha shirt) and chatted with me about FatT a bit in delight at seeing another fan.
5.
I had my hysterectomy yesterday! Yay! It's done! It's gone! The doctors were all very impressed that I could remember and say "I'm getting a complete hysterectomy with bilateral salpingectomy, preserving the ovaries" without any prompting every time they asked me (which five or six different people did) what procedure I was there for. One asked me if I was in a medical field and I was like "no I just got told this and remembered it", a feat that I do not find impressive but apparently is.
Honestly in a lot of ways the hardest part was just. Not eating beforehand. I got to the hospital at 11:15am and hadn't eaten since dinner at like 7:30pm the night before. Which, as things go, is not a huge problem at all.
Everyone was very nice! I felt very well-taken-care-of in the hospital! And by my friend who brought me home while I was like "look the worst symptoms of waking up after this feel more like migraine than like anything else" and considering that they were banished by "lie down in a dark room for a couple hours", that vibe seemed quite accurate. I've yet to need pain meds beyond ibuprofen/tylenol, though they did give me some oxycodone just in case.
My cat is very happy that I'm at home for her to snuggle on, too. <3
6.
hafnia and I have scheduled BESTIE HANGOUTS VISIT, finally, and so in just over a month I'll be flying out to visit her. <3 Beach! Attempting to befriend cats! Actually playing ttrpgs we've been meaning to play for at least a year! Other good and important things!
7.
hafnia is also starting up a new D&D campaign! It is open for new people to sign up for and join!
I'm delighted by this, because I've vastly enjoyed the last one she ran (it's more or less how we became besties, so, y'know) and it's super exciting that this one is gonna be getting off the ground—I've been hyped for it for like two years, since she first started talking about what would come next.
If you've ever been interested in giving D&D a shot, I highly recommend
hafnia as a GM. She's deeply invested in helping new players learn the game and answering any questions you might have, and in making sure you're set up to have a good time while playing.
If you're uncertain about playing or feel like you might not be around enough to commit to a campaign, please don't worry about it! This is a campaign set up as a series of interlinked one-shots and people are expected to play in one game every few months, and not always with the same group of other players (though people whose free time often lines up will generally see more of each other). (There's also text chat and text RP for those who find that fun, but it's not required!)
This campaign uses the Eberron campaign setting as a starting point, so it's fantasy magitech in a city that I always find reminds me of San Fransisco (look, if you're like "we have a limited bit of land next to water and are building up, though with magic support for going higher than otherwise" I'm gonna think of SF...), wherein society at large is figuring out how to rebuild and what they want to be now that a hundred-year-war has ended. The setting contains robots, airships, magical trains, and Houses blessed with magic tattoos that help them try to gain a monopoly on specific kinds of business.
The campaign will start at 1st level and if you're consistent with playing has the chance to take characters to level 20. All characters are part of a detective agency working as private investigators, and the themes of the game include a lot of mystery and noir vibes.
hafnia runs games entirely over discord voice chat using theater of the mind. e.g., we aren't using battle mats, you don't need to show anyone your face, and if you aren't sure about if you can do something you can ask and get an answer.
The vibes are heavier on story than on combat, and the narrative will be shaped by player actions. What we do has an effect on the story. What we're interested will show up more. Any NPC we decide we like will be brought to the forefront whether or not the GM understands our choices, because the point is for all of us to have fun and enjoy this story that we're telling together.
If you're new to D&D (and/or Eberron),
hafnia and the other experienced players will happily help you understand all the mechanics and what bits of lore actually matter. If you have questions, please ask!
If you want to sign up, here's the google form!

CANON: The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity
COMPLETED: 50/50
50 Sentence Table - Theme Set Beta

| 02 OBSCURE | Qingming found the obscure text within one of the many old scrolls sealed away in the temple library and it took many days to figure out it was not poetry but prophecy. |
| 03 SKELETON | When demons died they dissipated in a shower of golden light leaving no trace behind, so Qingming knew the skeleton had to belong to a human, increasing his fear as he carried on searching for Boya. |
| 04 NURSE | Being half-Fox demon meant he had exceptional healing abilities and needed no help with the injury from Fangyue sword, but with someone as pretty as Boya nursing him, he remained silent. |
| 05 DOMINO | The death of the Princess had a domino effect as the blame fell upon all demons rather than on just the Serpent, and even a half-demon such as Qingming was forced to leave as a new Demon Hunting Bureau took to the streets of the city. |
| 06 THAW | Boya's thaw towards him was a fast process following the iciness of their first meeting as masters rather than combatants, and yet it was still humbling compared to those of his own temple who still retained only coldness towards him. |
| 07 WAVES | Waves of pain radiated from the wound in his midsection but he pushed it all aside to focus on the previously unconscious man who was staggering up the steps towards him. |
| 08 BURGLAR | He had not saved the Pipa thief out of any desire for a reward but received the greatness gift of all when Killing Stone asked to become one of his shishen. |
| 09 FRAME | Someone had slipped the demon bug into his clothing deliberately, hoping to frame him for the murder of Master Hongrou or sow dissension between him and Boya but they never anticipated Boya defending him instead. |
| 10 CARPET | The soft carpet under his knees was a relief after kneeling for so long on a hard wood floor and was Master Zhongxing's way of showing he did not agree with his punishment for hurting those Yin-Yang disciples who had attacked him first. |
| 11 INSECT | Qingming had his seeing-eye talismans and Boya had his listening ears but Longye was strangest of all with the insects she could control and command. |
| 12 MENTOR | Master Zhongxing had been both mentor and father to Qingming since he lost his mother to a mob of angry humans decrying her as a Fox demon, so his death had left him filled with grief that had no outlet until he met Boya and shared it with him. |
| 13 SPIRIT | The first time he went into battle against the Serpent, Qingming withdrew the spirit talismans that would allow him to summon his shishen, sealing the command with his own blood. |
| 14 WAX | Qingming stayed in Tiandu for the full wax and wane of the moon following the defeat of the serpent but eventually he knew he would have to return to the Northern Temple even though it broke his heart to leave Boya behind. |
| 15 TRASH | They say one man's trash is another man's treasure, and this seemed all the more true as he watched his new shishen, once a discarded and broken demon, carve a path along the Serpent's back. |
| 16 WOMB | Lying in Boya's arms made him feel as safe, loved and protected as a babe in its mother's womb |
| 17 BURN | The candle burned slowly, marking off the hours one shichen at a time, but thoughts of Boya kept Qingming awake until the first light crept into his solitary bedroom as he wished he was still in Tiandu, lying in Boya's arms. |
| 18 FLASH | The flash of light reflected off a polished metal surface was the only warning he had of the attack but Qingming threw up the defense shield almost casually now that he knew who would willingly protect with his life. |
| 19 ANIMA | A Yin-Yang disciple was taught to reflect on both the conscious and subconscious parts of their being as it was the true balance of both that would make them a master, and yet it was this same knowledge that had made it so difficult for Qingming to achieve mastery of the protection spell. |
| 20 GAMBLE | He had never taken Boya for one who would choose to gamble with his life and he felt the weight of that choice lying heavy on his heart and shoulders as Boya raced to awaken Zhuque with his own blood. |
| 21 STATUE | The four guardian statues had stood at the cardinal points in Tiandu for centuries but Qingming never expected to see Zhuque awaken in the form of Boya or bind this god to him as shishen for the coming battle with the Great Serpent. |
| 22 PERFUME | Perhaps it was his Fox demon blood but Qingming had always had a keen sense of smell that went beyond the soaps and perfumes to the very core of a creature's emotions, scenting disgust on his fellow disciples yet something intoxicatingly wonderful from Boya once he accepted Qingming for who and what he was. |
| 23 WINE | Cherry plum blossom wine was his favorite despite his access to far more expensive wines because this particular wine had been made by his shishen in the only place that Qingming had ever considered his home. |
| 24 REFLECTION | Most rooms contained a bronzed mirror polished to perfection but Qingming thought it a pale imitation to his reflection in still water on a summer's day under a clear blue sky. |
| 25 TAKE | Qingming had long ago accepted that humans brought only pain and suffering to him so he expected nothing different when he stepped into Tiandu only to meet Boya, and if friendship was all Boya would ever offer then Qingming would gratefully take that and ask for nothing more. |
| 26 MAGIC | Words were powerful and had magic sizzling at his fingertips but Qingming learned that silence had another form of magic especially when quietly resting in Boya's embrace. |
| 27 FRAGMENT | He was very young when the villagers attacked him and his mother, leaving him with only fragmented memories of her that were weaved within the emotional fabric of love and intense fear so perhaps it was not surprising that he could not use his memory of her to raise the protection spell. |
| 28 CATS AND DOGS | As Qingming walked through the city streets to saw far more than most of its human inhabitants, seeing the aura around even a few stray cats and dogs that pronounced them as demons in disguise. |
| 29 HUM | Qingming made a new discovery in that he loved the sensation of Boya softly humming against his skin, especially when he kissed his way down Qingming's spine. |
| 30 FLINCH | Qingming had suffered the verbal and physical abuse of his fellow disciples, teaching himself not to flinch as that only opened the doors to even stronger abuse, determined to show them no fear. |
| 31 RUSH | As soon as he was able, Qingming rushed towards the statue of Zhuque, afraid he might already be too late to protect Boya. |
| 32 JESTER | The other Yin-Yang disciples treated him as if he was a clown and he did not try to convince them otherwise, meeting their cruel remarks and unwanted touches with teasing sarcasm and acrobatic moves that made others snigger behind their hands. |
| 33 HAVEN | The small place he had created for himself was easily accessible through a portal painting he carried with him always, kept close because he often sought a place away from the vile attentions of humans, never expecting that one day he would invite a human, Boya, to his safe haven. |
| 34 DUSK | With dusk came increased demon activity within the city as many humans closed up their stores and retired to their homes but other places stayed open with some humans attracted to the excitement, and Qingming was no different, finding a small pleasure house to enjoy some wine and entertainment. |
| 35 CHORD | When they first met Qingming teased Boya for having a lack of musical talent on the Pipa but now, weeks later, he sat entranced as the first chords lifted from Boya's clever fingers plucking on the strings like a true master. |
| 36 INDULGENCE | Qingming was not a hedonist despite appearances to the contrary but he did like to indulge in fine wine when the opportunity arose, especially when in the company of a beautiful man like Boya. |
| 37 FREEZER | Qingming's master had passed on his Shishen talismans but Qingming gave them the choice of serving him, aware he might lose Snow Hound's freezing abilities and Mad Painter's palette shields but it was the right thing to do. |
| 38 PASSAGE | Qingming knew he could only conjure a portal to places he had seen so journeys into unknown territory had to be done the human way by horseback or buying passage between the villages, towns and cities. |
| 39 COAST | Coming from the North Qingming had only seen mountains, valleys and fields of grass or ice before coming to the coastal Imperial city of Tiandu so he could not resist standing on the dock and staring out into water that stretched to the horizon. |
| 40 KEEPSAKE | When his mother screamed at him to run and hide Qingming obeyed her instantly and he never saw her again but he clutched her dark ribbon in his small hand using it to tie up his own hair through all the years that followed. |
| 41 MORBID | Qingming had noticed two types of humans; those that ran from demons and those drawn towards them by morbid fascination. |
| 42 SHIPWRECK | The wreckage floating onto the shore just north of the city had many speculating on what could have caused the ship to sink but Qingming could scent the ichor of a demon smeared across what remained of the deck. |
| 43 SOCKS | Qingming stood quietly as the servants carefully draped his robes over him, lifting each foot in turn as socks and then sandals were pulled on and fastened until finally he was ready to face the Princess for the first time alongside the masters from the other temples. |
| 44 SAND | Qingming watched dispassionately as sand began to trickle in the small room, quickly conjuring a portal to take him back to the Observatory courtyard so he could conjure yet another portal to find Boya, feeling the fear rise when it remained unconnected. |
| 45 COIN | Qingming handed a small coin to the little beggar demon, sensing that it had no malicious intent but had yet to find its place in this city of humans. |
| 46 GUILE | What Qingming most loved about Boya was his lack of guile, finding no hidden agendas or deceptions lying within him despite his closeness to the Imperial court. |
| 47 EYELASH | Fox demons were known to be charismatic, sexual creatures and yet Qingming had always drawn back from such behavior so he was surprised by the strange intimacy as Boya brushed a loose eyelash from his cheek with a soft smile. |
| 48 DRIVE | The other Yin-Yang disciples believed him lazy and hated him for the ease with which he mastered all but the one spell, never realizing how driven he was to practice every hour he was hidden away from them once he had mastered portals. |
| 49 NET | Just as not all humans were good, not all demons were bad so Qingming disliked the spirit nets set up by other Yin-Yang disciples that captured all demons indiscriminately, severing them whenever he saw them much to the others' disgust. |
| 50 DESTINATION | For all his words at their parting, Qingming had no intention of waiting decades before seeing Boya again, contacting him barely a week later with just the name of a nearby village to invite him on a Night Hunt. |
Just One Thing (18 July 2026)
Jul. 18th, 2026 11:48 amIt's challenge time!
Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.
Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished! Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!
Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

New Fics
Jul. 17th, 2026 11:23 pmI've managed some success on the writing front lately.
Coffee Meanderings: written for librarychick_94 for Fandom Trumps Hate. McShep. As requested, nothing bad happens, but a happy story. Rodney is drinking the wrong coffee and John wants to know why.
The Devastation We Reap: Gen. Just a short angsty story since acrowb likes my angst stories. They chose murder. Of course they did. While they always had the best of intentions, their impact was devastation and destruction, as though it was their policy to be stupid and rash. (Basically, my response to Ghost in the Machine and how very messed up their "solution" was. Elizabeth deserved so much better!)

Updates 7/17
Jul. 17th, 2026 10:35 pmI'm finally here to give updates!
Anyway, partner is still in the hospital. It seems he has a mild kidney infection, but it's also really unclear because the doctors can't agree and don't make any sense. The urologist thinks he is fine and should go home. The hospital refuses to release him until he passes through so many hoops such as getting cleared by a the surgeon at a different hospital, finishing IV antibiotics (he's given the 3 times a day), possibly getting another CT scan and who knows what else. Blah.
In better news: Librarychick_94 did a podfic of my story, Respite, and my daughter made a lovely cover for it. She did the art for the story when she was 4. It's 12 years later, and the cover she made is perfect and lovely. The podfic is so warm. I don't know how she got my fic to sound so awesome and I'm so excited. Seriously, amazing!

I hope you all are doing well.
First, thanks to everyone who wished me and my partner well on my last post. I'll answer soon, I'm just tired and overwhelmed. Still, your warm wishes were a balm in hard times.
The Emergency Room was a big disconcerting. I posted about it on Tumblr, but I think some of you are not there so here it is again:

7/16/2026 Least Tern Watch / Elsie Roemer / Arrowhead Marsh
Jul. 16th, 2026 07:51 pmOur final Least Tern Watch shift was much less exciting than last week's, many fewer Terns although still several hundred including chicks of all sizes. Happily the only flyovers were Turkey Vultures and Osprey, neither a danger to the colony. So at the end of our three hours we said good-bye and good luck to the Least Terns and went looking for Elegant Terns out at Antenna Pier. We could see them, but not well enough for U's County list, but before we continued on to Elsie Roemer I took a picture for
wellinghall. ( USS Hornet and an Alameda-San Francisco ferry )
At Elsie Roemer we found Elegant Terns and a number of other species, more than I expected in July, including a few Least Terns.:) ( A short list: )
The Black-bellied Plovers were in beautiul breeding plumage. Last stop of Arrowhead Marsh in hopes of the Cackling Goose that had been reported. No luck, but again there were more birds than I feared there would be. ( Another short list: )
Most surprising were the two aechmophorous Grebes floating out in San Leandro Bay. Most fun was hearing the racket from the Barn Swallow nests under the boardwalk.

Daily Happiness
Jul. 17th, 2026 08:19 pm1. Well, I was going to go in to work today because I have a weekly meeting with my supervisor, but just as I was starting to get ready to go, he messaged me and said if I still wasn't feeling well, we could skip the meeting and I could stay home, so I took him up on the offer. I am feeling mostly recovered, no more congestion, but the cough is lingering and I did have trouble sleeping again last night due to uncontrolled coughing, so I was glad not to feel like I had to force myself to go in just for that one meeting.
2. Last night I walked up to the library and then continued on to Whole Foods to see if they had anything appealing for dessert and I found they have magic cookie bars from their bakery and they don't have walnuts! When I've made them at home, I always leave out the nuts because I am not a fan of nuts in most baked goods, and especially not walnuts, which have such an overpowering flavor to me, but any time I've seen them elsewhere they've always got walnuts. These do have pecans, but that's acceptable, if not ideal. They are really delicious, actually. I would buy them again. (It was a pack of four, so I have dessert tonight, too.)
3. Carla's train seems to be reporting on time and she should be here in about twelve hours. I'm so glad she was able to get out of the Chicago area before the smoke.
4. Molly wants to know why I'm taking her picture.

Finally!
Jul. 18th, 2026 02:44 pmI am finally satisfied that I'm fully over the covid. It only took six months.
I was probably coming right after four to five months but when you're among the 'young elderly' time-out napping etc reduces your physical condition something awful. But I can now exercise and be normally tired as opposed to the post-exertion malaise nonsense. Such a bloody relief, I can tell you.
Talk to you all later, going for a nice brisk walk.

Weekly Reading
Jul. 17th, 2026 06:22 pmRecently Finished
The Egyptian Mystery & The Camden Spiritualist
Last two books in the Penny Green series. ( Super disappointed by the ending )
Murder Crossed Her Mind
Fourth in the Pentecost and Parker mystery series. I enjoyed this. It ended on a cliffhanger, so I immediately got the next one from the library.
The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts
New Marlow Murder Club book. Another cliffhanger from a genre that is usually stand-alone. I am not a fan! Especially in this case, as there is no release date yet for the next book and the US release is always very behind the UK release (this one, for example, was six months behind), which is a rant of its own. Books in English should be simulpubbed to English speaking countries! If there is no translation involved, there should be no delay! Anyway, I enjoyed this, but am also annoyed by the cliffhanger.
Space Invaders
Novella set in Chile during the Pinochet dictatorship about a group of classmates who have never forgotten the girl who mysteriously stopped coming to school one day. This is litfic, and the title is a reference to the video game, not to any sci-fi reason for her disappearance! I heard about this from a review by
rachelmanija and I liked it, though maybe not as much as she and other commenters seem to have. It's very short, though, so worth giving a go for sure.
Paved Paradise: How Parking Explains the World
This was such a good book! It explores the history of parking in the US and what measures have been taken in recent years to try and reverse the course of turning the entire country into one giant parking lot.
Rare Flavours
Graphic novel set in India, about a rakshasa who, after hearing of Anthony Bourdain's death, decides he wants to be the next Bourdain and finds someone to film him. I liked this a lot. Really nice art, too. I was also amused by the mash up of like, a cozy Japanese cooking manga (this has recipes!) and this literal demon who is eating the guys who cook for him (spoiler?). But it's not actually a comedy (though it does have a humorous tone through much of it).
