Hosts Crash Out in the Round of 16

World Cup Round of 16 saw Mexico, the U.S. and Canada exit as host nations. Read the biggest moments, key takeaways and what's next

In a familiar scene for fans of Mexico and the United States and a new one for Canadian supporters, all three World Cup host teams have been eliminated. Over three consecutive days, the hosts bowed out. All three went down to experienced teams who have been near the top of world football for years if not decades.

On paper, Mexico had perhaps the biggest home field advantage. They got to play in their fortress, the Azteca, at altitude, in front of some 80,000 of the most dedicated supporters on the planet. They went out and dominated England for long stretches, pushing Thomas Tuchel’s team to the brink. England, led by Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, proved too much in the end. Mexico even had a man advantage for much of the second half but could not find a way to get through the towering English back line.

For Mexico, it was the same old thing. They did well enough playing at home but can’t get to the late stages.  Coach Javier Aguirre does have a young star to build around though. Gilberto Mora played a terrific game for a player of any age, but for a boy of seventeen, he truly emerged at this World Cup as a player to watch. Big European clubs will be circling and looking to get him signed and moved across the Atlantic when he turns eighteen. At the other end of the age scale, Guillermo Ochoa announced his retirement from football. The forty year old goalkeeper made one appearance in the World Cup and will be fondly remembered by Mexican fans for his contributions over four World Cups.

Canada had the toughest draw. Because they didn’t finish on top of their group, they had to abandon the cozy setting of BC Place in Vancouver and travel for their first two elimination games. That trip ended in Dallas against Morocco. The 2022 semifinalists prepared well for Canada’s aggression. They kept the Canadians at bay in the first half and then cruised to an easy 3-0 win. Canada may have had most of the possession and created enough chances, but Morocco’s clinical finishing saw them through.

This World Cup will be considered a success north of the border. The Canadians had lost all six previous games at the World Cup, so their win over Qatar lit up the whole country. Then, they won an elimination game for the first time, beating South Africa. That was a major success. However, against Morocco, when they couldn’t call on their star player, Alphonso Davies, they lacked the guile needed to crack open the Moroccan defense. They went out with their heads held high and can look forward to more participation in the World Cup.

For the United States, it was more of the same. They had an excellent group phase, winning twice. They even won a third game in the round of thirty-two against Bosnia and Herzegovina after the controversial sending off of Folarin Balogun. At that point, all things pointed towards this being the USA’s best World Cup ever. Unfortunately, the events in the aftermath of Balogun’s red card cast a shadow over the team and the country. FIFA’s bizarre application of their regulations and the apparent intervention of President Donald Trump in the suspension of Balogun’s suspension destroyed any goodwill the USA had built during the early stages of the tournament.

The arguments for and against, legal, moral, or otherwise surrounding Balogun’s reinstatement to the team will continue long after the World Cup ends. It was a major distraction and perhaps led to the Americans poor start against Belgium. The Belgian manager, Rudi Garcia, expressed his anger in his press conferences building up to the game. Then, he shocked most observers by keeping his three big stars–Kevin DeBruyne, Jeremy Doku, and Romelu Lukaku–on the bench at the start. Did all the controversy and the surprise lineup contribute to the Americans poor first half? Maybe.

The US looked nervous and tentative from the kick-off. They lacked the intensity of the four previous games. Belgium pounced and opened the scoring less than ten minutes in when Charles De Ketelaere converted a tap in from a pass that went between Chris Richards legs. Matt Freese had to make a couple of terrific saves just to maintain the one-goal deficit while the USA tried to find its game. It took a while. Malik Tillman scored on a deflected free kick after thirty-one minutes and for a brief second the USA had a foothold. Then, barely a minute later De Ketelaere scored again. Alex Freeman failed to support Sergino Dest on the US right and an unchallenged cross came in for the tall Belgian attacker. He rose well over Tim Ream for another easy goal. Both his goals came from less than five yards out. The defending could not have been worse.

Gio Reyna replaced Dest at halftime as Mauricio Pochettino tweaked his team shape to try and give a better battle in midfield. Only Tillman looked capable of playing at the level of the Belgians during the first half. Balogun, the subject of all the pre-match discussions, had been kept under wraps with only a couple of shots from bad angles. Just as Pochettino’s adjustments looked to be giving the US a grip on the game, calamity struck. Freese came out of his area to win a long ball but hesitated and then stumbled as he tried to play the ball. Hans Vanaken easily passed it into the unguarded goal to end the game as a contest. The Americans huffed and puffed but couldn’t lay a glove on the Belgians.

Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois saved once more from Balogun after narrowing the angle on his shot and Sebastien Berhalter rifled a volley wide as frustration was followed by resignation. More comical defending by Chris Richards handed Lukaku a goal in stoppage time to give the score a lopsided look.

For the USA, they are right where they were four years ago. In Qatar, they stumbled out of the World Cup in the round of 16 against the Netherlands thanks to some comical defending and the inability to break through a well-marshalled defense.  All the commercial promotions, all the moves by players to big clubs around Europe, the hiring of a famous coach, and hosting the World Cup have all led the US national team to the exact same finish:  elimination in the round of sixteen by a European team. The US has gone out in the round of 16 for the last four World Cup in which they have participated.

US Soccer will have to take stock. They will have to decide if they want to continue with Pochettino. There were some discussions about an extension before the World Cup, but wisely neither party committed to continuing the relationship. It’s going to be four long years until the next World Cup in 2030. Many of the players on this team will still be contenders for the next World Cup. Will Christian Pulisic be among them? He had a terrific forty-five minutes against Paraguay, came off injured, and didn’t do much in his remaining appearances. He tried to play hurt during the second half against Belgium when he could have gone down to stop play and be substituted. He was still limping badly when the third Belgian goal went in. This was not the World Cup the so-called “Captain America” wanted.

While the US national team licks its significant wounds, they can point to what happened around the country where thousands of fans went to watch parties, more thousands showed up to the stadiums paying extraordinary amounts of money to fill big stadiums and provide a home field advantage. They set records for television viewership that blew away anything from any prior World Cup. A lot of positives will come from this effort, but on the field, the song remains the same, round of sixteen and not nearly enough to get further.

Ahora, US Soccer deberá hacer una evaluación profunda.
