The OTW Board will be holding its next public meeting at 02:00 on August 1 UTC (what time is that for me?).

This meeting will be held in the Board Discord server. The server will have a team of moderators and a set of rules (including question rules) and community guidelines. The server will remain open even after the meeting, but the channels for meeting and asking questions will be read-only. Board will be posting replies to questions that do not get addressed during the scheduled meeting two weeks after the meeting in the server’s #questions-answers channel.

The agenda will include:

  • Decisions made since the last public board meeting
  • 2026 OTW Board Election update
  • Board Roadmap update
  • Any other business (Questions & Answers)

Prior to this meeting, there is an opportunity to ask questions in advance to be answered as part of the meeting. This allows anyone who wishes to ask the Board questions, whether they will be able to attend the meeting live or not. Board will also accept questions during the meeting.

Questions submitted to this Google Form will be accepted up to three days before the meeting begins or until 50 questions have been submitted. At that point, the form will be turned off. You need to be logged in to a Google account to submit a question. In the future, these rules may be amended as needed.

Further information will be available in the OTW Board Discord server.

↑↑↑ Available dates:
July 28 & 30
August 4 & 6
August 11 & 13

Hello, well met, and welcome to this week's Free for All. ^_^ There are no themes to follow for prompts or fills. Btw, if you perhaps missed a prompt theme that you liked, or you've had any ideas that didn't really work with Tuesday's or Thursday's posts, then today's your chance to prompt 'em. Be free, and have fun! ✎

Just a few rules:
1. No more than five prompts in a row.
2. No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
3. Use the character's full name and the fandom's full name for ease in adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
4. No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here. Unfortunately, DW doesn’t have a cut tag, so use your best judgment when it comes to spoilers.
5. If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the spoiler cut.
6. If your story has possible triggers, please warn for them in the subject line!

Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt

Are today's prompts not catching your eye? No worries, because we have plenty of older prompts that just might do the trick! You can browse through the comm's calendar archive (here on LJ or here on DW) for themed and Free For All posts, or perhaps check out Sunday posts for Lonely Prompt requests. (Or, you can be like me, and try to save interesting prompts as you see 'em... and then end up with multiple text doc files full of [themes + links + prompts] that you can easily look through and search for keywords.) Multiple fills for one prompt are welcome, by the way! Oh, and you are very likely to find some awesome fills to read as well, and wouldn't it be nice to leave a comment on those lovely little writing distractions? ~_^

We are on AO3! If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3, please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2026 collection.

If you are viewing this post on our Dreamwidth site: please know that fills posted here will not show up as comments on our LiveJournal site, but you are still more than welcome to participate. =)

If you have a Dreamwidth account and would feel more comfortable participating there, please feel free to do so… and spread the word! [community profile] comment_fic

A friendly reminder about our posting schedule: Themed posts for new prompts go up on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Saturdays are a Free for All day for new prompts of any flavor. Sundays are for showing Lonely Prompts some love, whether by requesting for someone to adopt them or by sharing any fills that you've recently completed.

15.    Today is Saint Swithin’s Day, which is celebrated for its connection to weather lore. People believe that the weather on this day sets the pattern for the next 40 days.  What kind of weather will you be having for the next 40 days, based on today’s weather?

On the 15th we had gusting winds and nonstop rain. Today was the same. We had flooding and someone drowned in their car. Our flash floods are brutal.

16.    It’s World Snake Day – do you ever see snakes where you live? Have you ever held one?

We have lots of different snakes in our dessert climate. Especially rattlesnakes. Yes I’ve held a snake. They dont scare me. I like boa constrictors. Is that how you spell it?

Thursday - Meet Ugly

Hello, everyone. I’m [personal profile] simplyn2deep and your host for the week. Today's theme is Meet Ugly.

We all know the classic meet-cute, that charming, romantic first meeting that starts a relationship. But today we're flipping the script! A meet ugly is a first encounter that's awkward, embarrassing, chaotic, disastrous, or just plain unfortunate. Maybe someone spills coffee, gets arrested, insults their future soulmate, crashes into them with a shopping cart, or mistakes them for someone else.

📌 Just a few rules:
✏️ No more than five prompts in a row.
🎭 No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
📝 Use the character's full name and fandom's full name for ease in adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
⚠️ No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option.
📚 If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the spoiler cut option.

Prompts should be formatted as follows:
[Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt

Some examples to get the ball rolling...
🌺 Hawaii Five-0, Steve McGarrett/Danny Williams, Steve crashes Danny's car during a chase before they've even properly introduced themselves.
🚓 9-1-1, Evan "Buck" Buckley/Eddie Diaz, Buck mistakes Eddie for someone stealing equipment from the firehouse and tackles him before realizing Eddie is the new firefighter.
🚀 The Mandalorian, Din Djarin & Grogu, Grogu steals a stranger's lunch with the Force, leaving Din to apologize while chasing after him.

We are now using AO3 to bookmark filled prompts 📚✨. If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3 please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2026 collection. See further notes on this new option here.

Not feeling any of today’s prompts? 🤔 You can use LJ’s advanced search options to limit keyword results to only comments in this community. Fret not, DW members 💙; we are working on a way to search through old entries for prompts for you! As of right now, the best way to search for a lonely prompt on DW is to search the community’s archive, which can be found [[HERE]].

While the use of LJ's advanced search and DW’s archive are options, bookmarking the links of prompts you like 🔖 might work better for searching in the future.

As a friendly reminder about our schedule ⏰, Lonely Prompts and sharing completed fills are encouraged on Sundays 🌿, while new themes and prompts are posted on Tuesdays and Thursdays 📅. Saturdays are a Free for All day 🎉. We'll share our posts on DW and LJ for everyone's convenience. Keep an eye out for notifications! 👀

If you have a Dreamwidth account and would feel more comfortable participating there, please feel free to do so…and spread the word! 📣 [community profile] comment_fic

If you have questions regarding volunteering for the OTW, check out our Volunteering FAQ.

Open Doors Technical Volunteer

Do you know SQL and Python or other programming languages and want to rescue at-risk fan archives?

The Open Doors project receives many requests to rescue fan sites which are at risk of disappearing because their owners can no longer maintain them. The sites we import to the Archive Of Our Own range from database-driven archives based on common software packages like eFiction and Automated Archive to hand-coded HTML sites that are over twenty years old!

As a technical volunteer for Open Doors, you will process the contents of legacy sites to do the following:

  • analyse the original data to find all the content and metadata needed for the import
  • remove spam, legacy navigation and personal information such as email addresses from HTML files
  • convert tags to official AO3 tags as specified by the Tag Wrangling team
  • ensure no text exceeds AO3’s character limits, splitting summaries, notes or chapters as needed
  • detect and fix any garbled text resulting from encoding errors
  • detect and fix any invalid author emails and empty chapters
  • convert the cleaned data to MySQL tables in a standard format that can be ingested automatically into the Archive

As the person responsible for ensuring that all the content from the original site is correctly imported to the AO3, you will have an excellent eye for detail and an ability to work independently within the rules of Open Doors. You will also liaise regularly in chat with other Open Doors volunteers, keeping them up to date with your progress on your assigned tasks.

To apply for this role, you must be at least 18 years old and legally of age to open explicit fanworks in your local jurisdiction.

Please note that you will be asked to complete a short coding test (to be returned in 1 week) as part of your application. You are not expected to spend more than an hour on this coding test, though you are welcome to do so if you have time. We do not permit the use of AI tools during the selection process for this position.

Applications are due 22 July 2026 or after 30 applications

Apply to be an Open Doors Technical Volunteer at the volunteering page! If you have further questions, please contact us.

Tag Wrangling Volunteer

The Tag Wranglers are responsible for helping to connect and sort the tags on AO3! Wranglers follow internal guidelines to choose the tags that appear in the filters and auto-complete, which link related works together. This makes it easier to browse and search on the archive.

Wranglers need to be fluent in English but we welcome applicants who are also fluent in other languages, especially Čeština (Czech), isiZulu (Zulu), Français (French), Polski (Polish), Tiếng Việt (Vietnamese), ไทย (Thai), and 日本語 (Japanese), but knowledge of additional languages is always appreciated!

If you are fluent in 中文 (Chinese), we strongly encourage you to apply for our Chinese Tag Wrangling role, which is specifically designed to support our growing Chinese community. We welcome all dialects!

We also have a separate Specified Languages role, intended to provide additional opportunities for applicants fluent in the following languages: Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian), Español (Spanish), Filipino, Italiano (Italian), Português (Portuguese), Türkçe (Turkish), Українська (Ukrainian), Русский (Russian), and 한국어 (Korean). If you speak one of these languages, we encourage you to consider applying for that role, as space in the general role can fill quickly.

Translation Translator

If you enjoy working collaboratively, if you’re fluent in a language other than English, if you’re passionate about the OTW and its projects, and want to help us reach more fans all around the world, working with Translation might be for you!

Translation volunteers help make the OTW and its projects accessible to a wider global audience. We work on translating content by the OTW and its projects from English to other languages, such as site pages, news posts, AO3 FAQs and AO3 Support emails. (However, we do not translate fanworks.)

We really need volunteers who speak Afrikaans, Arabic, Bengali, Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Estonian, Finnish, Galician, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Malay, Marathi, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, European Portuguese, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Welsh—but help with other languages would be much appreciated. 1 large lime, zested and juiced (about 2 teaspoons zest and 2 tablespoons juice)

2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

1 garlic clove, minced

¼ teaspoon kosher salt

3X

2 pounds shrimp, peeled and deveined

1 English cucumber, small diced

3 green onions, thinly sliced

Make the dressing. To make the dressing, stir together the mayonnaise, sour cream, lime zest and juice, dill, mustard, garlic, salt, and pepper. Set aside or place in the fridge.

Cook the Shrimp. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add the shrimp and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until cooked through and pink. Drain.

Stir it all together. In a mixing bowl, stir together the chopped shrimp, green onion, diced cucumber, and dressing, until creamy.

Do you think aliens really exist?

I believe we are not alone. The Supreme Being could have easily created different people for different planets. And I refuse to believe the only aliens are bad and scary aliens. I hope someday we find out. I know, I'm weird. What do you all think?

✨ Tuesday: Two-Word Prompts ✨

Hello, everyone. I’m [personal profile] simplyn2deep  and your host for the week. Today's theme is Two Word Prompts.

Sometimes the shortest prompts spark the biggest stories! Today's challenge is simple: create prompts using just two words. They can be literal or abstract, emotional or action-packed, sweet or spooky.

🐺 Teen Wolf, Derek Hale/Stiles Stilinski, Silent Promise
🚓 Hawaii Five-0, Steve McGarrett & Danny Williams, Missed Flight
🚀 Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Christopher Pike & Spock, Unexpected Visitor

Five Things Elin Said

Posted by choux

Every month or so the OTW will be doing a Q&A with one of its volunteers about their experiences in the organization. The posts express each volunteer’s personal views and do not necessarily reflect the views of the OTW or constitute OTW policy. Today’s post is with Elin, who volunteers as a Communications Event Coordinator and Translation Volunteer Manager.

How does what you do as a volunteer fit into what the OTW does?
I currently hold two different positions at the OTW.

For one, I’m part of the Communication committee’s Events Coordination team. As an example for what we do, whenever you see a post on the AO3 homepage celebrating a milestone, or on the OTW website commemorating one of our anniversaries, I might have had a hand in it! We also organize special activities to go with some events, such as a a themed bingo we did recently, the special anniversary skin we released for AO3’s 15th anniversary, or even our annual International Fanworks Day (IFD).

As for my second role, I’m also a volunteer manager in our Translation committee. It’s a very varied position, as volunteer managers pull the strings behind the scenes necessary to keep a 200+ people strong committee running smoothly. That encompasses a lot of different day-to-day tasks. Some of those tasks include: preparing documents for translation, and assigning them to translators, helping translate news posts and posts concerning larger events, such as the OTW’s Membership Drive, and are generally being the first point of contact for any problems a translator might run into. And that’s just a small part of our work!

What is a typical week like for you as a volunteer?

Honestly it varies a lot! Like most OTW volunteers, I have a day job that takes up a lot of my time and energy during the week, so I’ll typically do small, quick tasks on weeknights, if possible. Those tasks that require a sustained amount of focus and effort I try to save for the weekend. It also varies by time of year how much work I do for each of my roles! For example, when IFD rolls around in February (and during the months leading up to it), my workload during the week might increase for a time.

What made you decide to volunteer?

Story old as time, I suppose, but I’ve been reading fanfic on AO3 for a long time (since I was 14 or 15, I believe) without getting into fan communities much. I really wanted to return something to fandom space at large, and AO3 in particular. When I saw that the OTW was recruiting for German translators, I applied, and was accepted!

During my time as an active translator (volunteer managers usually mostly step back from that) my work included translating all these amazing news posts other volunteers had written. I wanted to try my hand at coming up with posts myself, which was one of my motivations to apply as an Event Coordinator. And then I realized that as a volunteer manager I’d have even more varied tasks I could tackle, so I switched roles inside the Translation committee last year!

What has been your biggest challenge doing work for the OTW?

Probably figuring out how to balance my day job/hobbies/relationships with OTW volunteering! For me personally it’s very easy to head straight into burnout, as I’m very enthusiastic about any new tasks I’ve taken on. However, there are always more things to do, and I’ve had to learn to occasionally take a step back and take a break, the better to sustain my enjoyment of the work I do!

What fannish things do you like to do?

Reading fanfic, primarily! In a variety of fandoms, for a variety of ships (or platonic relationships). More recently, I’ve also started taking more of an interest in other online fan spaces, though I tend to lurk more than actively involve myself. Otherwise, I like creating my own AO3 site skins – I find it quite meditative – and I swear one of these days I’ll actually commit to finishing a story myself and posting it.

Now that our volunteer’s said five things about what they do, it’s your turn to ask one more thing! Feel free to ask about their work in the comments. Or if you’d like, you can check out previous Five Things posts.

12.    If your physical condition were no object, is there a sport or activity you’d like to have tried and learned to a high level?

I always wanted to go on a zipline, but then I got pulmonary hypertension. I'm on oxygen now. So, I'll never know. And boy do I miss the wild roller coasters. The faster and scarier, the better. I would love to go on them again.

13.    Do you own a swimming costume? When was the last time you went swimming (pool or ocean)? Yes, I have like ten swimsuits. I love to swim. I went swimming in a pool. On last Monday and swam for 2 hours. I don't swim in lakes or ocean. I have to be able to see the bottom. People think that's weird.

Architectural terms, stairs

Hello all, I'm trying to find specific vocabulary for staircases. I'm looking at an interior staircase in a Georgian home (but the stair itself might be later.) The thing that strikes me as distinctive is that it surrounds a hall on three sides, having one landing that runs along an exterior wall. I love the look of it, and I'm trying to find vocabulary more specific than risers, balustrades, landings, which is what I tend to get when looking for glossaries.

Hi, sorry I'm late! I missed my short window to post this morning. 6^^;; Welcome to Lonely Prompts Sunday. If this is your first time at [community profile] comment_fic on a Sunday, you can either request previous prompts to be filled or share your recent fills for prompts. (Or do both, of course!) ✎

How to look for prompts:
We have plenty of prompts that might just nibble away at your brain today. ~_^

Whichever you decide to do, prompt or fill (or both), please remember:
1. You can only request five prompts to be filled.
2. You can request no more than three prompts from a particular fandom.
3. You can, however, fill as many prompts in as many fandoms as you'd like!
4. In the subject line, be sure to say whether it is a request or a fill!
5. You must link back to wherever the prompt is in the community archive (whether filling or requesting), and, if you're filling the prompt, please post the fill as a reply to the original prompt.
6. If you are filling an "any/any" prompt, please let us know what fandom you've written it for (or if it's original!).
8. If there are possible triggers in your story, please warn for them in the subject line!
7. If you've filled any lonely prompts in the past week, this is the place to share them!
9. Finally, please remember to add your prompt fills to our AO3 collection: Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2026 collection. See further notes on this option here.

Casino table games

Is there anyone here who knows enough about betting on casino table games to help me work out a few things for my novel? Table games please, not slots. Sitting at a machine stuffing coins isn't that interesting in prose and doesn't provide much room for interaction.

One scenario is that he loses big and blames another player for it. Or something else happens which is plausible for a casino and makes him mad but doesn't involve the gambling directly. I have no experience. It doesn't have to be justified anger, he's hair trigger. My one idea is that another player scatters his chips, but I'm not sold on that. Spilling drinks happens in a hotel bar five chapters earlier.

The other scenario is that someone is intentionally egging him on to bet badly. This isn't necessary, just a slightly wicked idea. It would be a later scene.

He favours simpler games as he's always drunk & high. From what I've been able to find, roulette might be the best - simple mechanism but a complex set of betting options. I could pick and choose from pages about the game but I have no idea how the flow of it might go and it would be cool to write the scene around a plausibly realistic sequence of bets. The other players know what they're doing and how to play the odds.

If you can suggest something around another simple table game, please do. I'm not attached to roulette - his eyes can go blurry watching it go round and round another time. Poker is probably too complicated, blackjack is easy and I use that for a scene where there's little detail about the gambling.

Thanks for any help.
