1. We had a nice evening at Disneyland and got a free Magic Key license plate frame!

2. I was worried we'd come back to a really hot, stuffy house after having been gone a long day, but it really wasn't too bad. The humidity's down a little and it's a bit windier, so that helps.

3. I had significantly less coughing today. Still not zero, but definitely a continued improvement.

4. Jasper is such a handsome boy.

We did an after work trip today and I was worried about the weather being super gross, but it was actually not as bad as it has been! Higher temps than at home, but the humidity was lower and it was overcast so the sun wasn't blazing down on us, which helped a lot (we did get pretty sweaty still, but it seemed easier to cool down).

How Courtyard Blocks Promote Social Connection

The courtyard block is one of the oldest and most successful urban forms we have. If you’ve walked through Barcelona, Vienna, Berlin, Stockholm, Rome, Prague, Copenhagen, or almost any great European city, you have likely admired courtyard block neighborhoods without necessarily realizing what you were seeing. From the street, you see the continuous building wall: shops, doors, windows, balconies, cornices, stoops, and street life. What you often do not see is the second world inside the block: a protected green courtyard hidden behind the public face of the city.

America has few courtyard blocks that are solid walls of independently owned buildings. But it does have some things are that are related...

In honor of Moon Landing Day, James Marsters reading "1969" by Alex Dimitrov. Tumblr logged it as "mature content" and my only guess as to why is that it flagged the 69 as something other than a date.

Meanwhile, now having access to Apple TV, I'm thinking back on the conversation I recently had with my dad about using a TV series as a way to avoid decision paralysis. You simply go onto the next episode. I want to keep working through what Ryan Gosling movies I've got, but once that's over, it might well be time for some serials again.

I have heard line and verse on the fuckery that is F'lar/Lessa and F'nor/Brekke with their nonconsensual sex flowing into committed loving relationships.

But I will maintain that out of all the speculative fiction I read as a kid/preteen, the most fucked up pairing is Jondalar/Ayla from the Earth's Children series. And I will die mad about the second half of the series constantly reinforcing it, bringing in patriarchal bullshit, and forcing Ayla into a mold of a woman she was NOT MEANT TO BE.

I've written a couple of the missing interviews with Zhao Xinci during his loyalty test in episode 16. :-)

Title: Surface Tension (1540 words) by china_shop [General Audiences]
Characters: Zhao Xinci | Zhao Yunlan's Father, Zhang Shi, Chu Shuzhi
Additional Tags: Episode 16, Missing Scene, loyalty test, Secret Identity, Anti-Dixing Bigotry, Zhao Xinci’s A+ Parenting, Summary:

In Zhao Xinci’s day, he’d never have countenanced one of Them on his team. When races mingled, discord and divided loyalties were inevitable. But of course Yunlan thought he knew better, was apparently willing to bet Haixing’s security on the strength of the Dixing Envoy’s judgement and so set in place the perfect conditions for his own downfall. Zhao Xinci’s hand clenched on his tea mug, unthinkingly borrowing some of his stowaway’s strength.

Careful, murmured Zhang Shi, you’ll break it and give us away.

Title: Cold Blood, Hot heart (1238 words) by china_shop [General Audiences]
Characters: Zhu Hong, Zhao Xinci | Zhao Yunlan's Father
Additional Tags: Episode 16, Missing Scene, loyalty test, Zhu Hong’s crush on Zhao Yunlan, Zhao Xinci’s A+ Parenting, Summary:

Zhu Hong was not a shrinking violet. The only way she knew to cope with conflict was to barge into it. So she knocked and entered without waiting for an invitation, all fired up to give Zhao Yunlan’s father a piece of her mind.

Birdfeeding

Today is mostly cloudy and warm, but less sweltering than recent days.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 7/20/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 7/20/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I saw a gray catbird trying to break open a beetle.  Without direct sunlight, I couldn't tell for sure, but some sort of small scarab mostly likely a junebug or Japanese beetle.  This catbird had somehow figured out that, although the outside was armored, the inside was tender and delicious.  The bird mostly hurled the beetle at the pavement and pecked at it.  Sometimes it held onto the beetle and thrashed it against the ground.  This caused the beetle to bounce around a lot.  The catbird never lost track of its prey, even when the beetle bounced into a pile of leaves.  Impressive.  Eventually the beetle broke open enough for the bird to take a bite, then fly away with it.

It's intriguing to watch how predators learn.  Ten years so so back, when the Japanese beetles first arrived, nothing ate them and they devoured every green thing in sight.  I spent several years saying, "Dear insectivores, I know that these are unfamiliar to you, but I swear they are insects and therefore your food."  Then one summer several beautiful new types of wasps appeared in swarms on my sedum and garlic chive flowers.  Looking them up, I discovered they were parasitoids who all prey on scarab beetles.  The next year the junebugs and Japanese beetles were fewer, and their populations have fallen since. :D

EDIT 7/20/26 -- We hauled more rocks to the purple-and-white garden.

EDIT 7/20/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 7/20/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 7/20/26 -- I watered the new picnic table garden.

Understanding the Climatarian Diet

The climatarian diet centres how you buy, prepare, eat, and store food on reducing greenhouse gas emissions while still enjoying a variety of foods prepared simply. Plant-based foods tend to have the lowest Carbon Cost, so the climatarian diet encourages at least 75% of your plate to be plant based.

Some extra points here:
* Grow at least some of your own food if you can. This eliminates shipping.
* If you grow landrace crops, they can adapt to climate change, plus you don't need to buy seeds or seedlings for those anymore.
* Farmer's markets, farmstands or truckstands, U-Pick farms, and Community Supported Agriculture are good alternatives for locally grown foods.
* Also watch for local products at grocery stores, especially health food stores or food co-ops.
* Prefer climate-resilient crops, whether you grow or buy them.

1. I definitely imagined the origami dinosaur being smaller than the lego dinosaur. But it was easier to find my scrapbooking paper than my origami paper, and that was bigger. It worked out fine!

2. I definitely also imagined making a different dinosaur. Maybe a stegosaurus! I looked at a few different youtube videos, but all of them seemed like they had the classic origami 'then do some magic' step more than once.

3. Then I found this one! Step by step with photos: Origami. How to Make a Dinosaur, by Mariapetro12. And also a youtube video: How to make a dinosaur out of paper.

4. It's a bit front-heavy, so I dropped a nickel in the back fold, and there's a paper clip holding the top together. And now it totally stands on its own, unless the cat knocks it over!

5. Since my paper was sort of light blue, and the neck and tail are REALLY long, it definitely came out looking like Champ, the Lake Champlain lake monster.

6. My absolute favorite part of the above Champ explainer page: "Although many people are skeptical of sightings, Champ is now protected by law on both sides of Lake Champlain, just in case."

I got back to my apartment at 2:20 this afternoon, but didn't finish laundry until about 20 minutes ago. As happens. I might've been able to catch the last few panels of World Wide Slash Con, but wasn't feeling any pressure there - no need to come in late to the whole thing.

Getting back to my apartment, I found out that my family hadn't been sending any text messages to the group chat, for some reason. I'd gotten a couple spam texts up on vacation, so I thought that my phone didn't need to be connected to the wifi network. It turns out, all over again, that's not how the technology works. Even when the message is just a piece of text. I don't know how to change this and I suspect it's built into the phones at this point.

The highlight of last night was definitely pulling out a wine book of some kind, opening it to a random page, and dramatically reading a paragraph on a chablis-focused vineyard to my niece A., who clearly didn't know what I was saying but appreciated my theatricality. Second was the way a thunderstorm came straight down so that you could stand within two inches of the edge of the awning and be reasonably dry, but stick your hand out and you'd feel the rain.

2. We had planned to go to Disneyland today, since Carla hasn't been in a couple weeks while she was out of town, but with her train being so delayed, we decided to just stay home and rest and do an after-work Disney trip tomorrow instead.
