Weekly Challenge

Here I will attempt to compare popular songs to their indie counterpart for licensing purposes.  Each week I will take the number one song from a Billboard chart, post it on this page, and include a similar indie band’s song as well as a description as to why I chose it.

#1: Psy – Gangnam Style

Compares to… JJ Project – Bounce

I found that not many Kpop artists involve techno in their work, so I thought this song “Bounce” had a similar dance feel as well as the male vocals comparable to PSY.  Many of the Kpop girl groups have a comparable almost techno sound but their vocals are too high pitch and made my ears bleed a tad so I didn’t get into any of that.

#1: Swedish House Mafia – Don’t You Worry Child

Compares to… Nause – Hungry Hearts

Complete with a beat, sound, and message of empowerment, so similar to “Don’t You Worry Child” its eerie.

Swedish House Mafia – “Don’t you worry child, don’t you worry child, see heaven’s got a plan for you.”

Nause – “We are the people, we rule the world.”

#1: Rihanna – Diamonds

Compares to… Rita Ora – Shine Ya Light

This young up and comer is signed to Jay-Z’s label Roc Nation and is doing very well for herself.  This song has a very similar lyrical meaning to Rihanna’s “Diamond,” telling the world to shine, be you you are.  Shining diamonds in the sky vs. just plain shinning and setting the

Also Compares to… Zola Jesus – Diamonds (Cover)

Covers are like little presents, you never know what you are going to get but this one is great!

#1: Fun. – Some Nights

Compares to… The Format – Dead End

This is an easy comparison.  The Format existed between 2001 and 2008 and consisted of Sam Means and Nate Ruess.  They share a very similar sound to Fun. for one very obvious reason, Nate Ruess.  After the split of The Format Ruess went on to form Fun. that same year, carrying that catchy indie pop sound with him.

#1: Maroon 5 – One More Night

Compares to… Boyce Avenue – When The Lights Die

This song compares lyrically to “One More Night” by depicting a complicated lovers quarrel.  They are also have a pop rock sound that can be compared to that of Maroon 5’s.  Also, they are completely indie, signed to their own created independent label.

(Also) Compares to… The Cab – Bad

This band is signed to Fueled By Ramen but that is not a major label.  They cary a very similar sound and tone of song as “One More Night.”
