Reading: No change. (Still working on Ruffage and The Gate of the Feral Gods.)

Watching: A few more episodes of Widow's Bay. Three to go!

Foodstuffs: Farmshare, week 3: 1 green cabbage, 2 cucumbers (1 unagi, 1 Demeter), garlic scapes, fennel, carrots, and cherries. It turns out that'll be our final visit to that location; the farm/market we're supporting is about to finish their 700-meter move and will hopefully be back to business as usual in the new space as of Wednesday. (I say "finishing" their move because they already moved a bunch of fridge/freezer stuff sometime in the last couple of weeks.)

We cooked a couple of veggies via How to Cook Everything (tenth anniversary edition) this week. [personal profile] scruloose used the oven-braised celery recipe for the celeriac root, and then yesterday I (I!) baked individually foil-wrapped beets in the toaster oven.

The beets had gotten a bit sprouty and rooty, but were still nice and firm and looked fine; they also may have been slightly overcooked, as the recipe was for medium or large beets with a time range of 45 to 90 minutes, and these got about 40 minutes. I mention all these details because I hated them, so I was hoping I'd gotten something wrong, but when [personal profile] scruloose got home and tried one, they reported liking it fine and that it was about what they would've expected. (They got a sweet note that I didn't. Different taste detection? Difference between individual beets? Different because the one I tried was still warm and [personal profile] scruloose's was out of the fridge?)

I'll still take it as successfully cooking, however basic the recipe.

Materialism: I don't think I've remembered to mention that I FINALLY (on the fourth try, I think, over several years) managed to spend my store credit with Fluevog. I've been eyeing these boots for a good couple of years now and the current sale is, I think, the first time they've ever gone on sale, so I risked it. I'm trying not to buy shoes with any heel to speak of anymore (and also, I basically never go out? So getting these is really kind of ridiculous? But look at them), but I was hoping that they'd work out since the actual rise between parts of the foot is relatively minimal...and they fit and I love them. I haven't actually worn them out of the house yet, and I think they'll take some breaking in (I really hope that works well), but it's hard to say for sure since my feet find basically all footwear uncomfortable these days.

I love them. If they ever get released in an amazing purple, I will be so screwed. (The only colorways they've had besides the orange are the pink you can still see and black. The fact that the black isn't there anymore makes me wonder if they're being phased out.)

I caught a snake.

I caught a snake today.

I caught a snake today.

At a little local swimming lake, some kids were talking about “water snakes” and I figured those might be actual snakes but they might be plant leaves, they could even be sticks...

Then I saw the snake. Real, living, swimming snake. What I now know was most likely a northern water snake, swimming along the rope at the edge of the swimming area.

I checked it wasn’t a rattlesnake, and I picked it up. Just like that.

One hand just behind the head, one in the middle of the body, the last bits and the tail curled up around my arm. I didn’t squeeze or pinch, holding firm and gentle. I told the kids to pet it gently on the side, and one lived the joke to touch its head and got a hiss right after the warning not to do that. But no harm done to anyone.

After shocking the pants off everyone, I let it back into the water a good way away from where I’d picked it up. No need to keep it around people.

I’m pretty sure that with that high the rest of The vacation’s all downhill from here.

But oh, what. A. High.

Suat 1: L.E.S. by Ginger Creek was awesome! Desiré joins one of Seville, Spain's Suat teams and must face the rival team they share a stadium with.

Suat is a co-ed invented sport. The author confirmed to me that she's a fan of Nora Sakavic's All for the Game (also about a co-ed invented sport). Of course, the plot is completely different, but I think the vibes will please AFTG fans.

So, Suat means "Survival Athletes", and a game has 3 rounds:
- dodgeball on trampolines
- a team sport, such as Capture the flag
- an individual sport, like archery

There's major f/f and m/m/m, several POC, a woman with vitiligo, characters with ADHD, autism...

There’s enough internet here to check email and Dreamwidth, and there’s enough distance from my computer to think a lot about the stories I can’t poke at from here. Hopefully they’ll be worthwhile thoughts when I get back.

There’s also enough space in my room here to do a few push ups, as a way to effectively work out having been in a car for several hours.

Fannishness (or a lack thereof)

settiai: (AO3 -- stultiloquentia)

I swear that I'm going to force my brain to actually get back into properly doing fannish things again even if it kills me. That's my plan for this weekend, whether said brain likes it or not. I'm setting my alarm in the mornings on Saturday and Sunday, and I'm forcing myself to get up no matter how little sleep I get. I can always take a short nap in the afternoon if needed (also with an alarm).

I have approximately five million fic WIPs, but lately I haven't been working on anything that isn't specifically for an exchange. My plan is to to pick a WIP, open the file, and not allow myself to do anything else until I write at least 500 words. Minimum. I'm really hoping that will kickstart my muse if I'm not allowing myself to do anything else until I hit that goal.

We're also edging closer and closer to Yuletide season, so I really want to start re-reading/re-watching/etc. a few things now both for requesting and offering purposes. Reading is easier, since I can fit that in at work between calls and such, but the re-watching part is harder to fit into my schedule. I'm going to try to set aside time every day (within reason - Wednesdays and Fridays will probably be out since I have work all day and then D&D in the evening) for that purpose if I can manage it.

Not to mention that I still need to get caught up on Critical Role, especially since they're taking a break right now which is the perfect opportunity. I think part of my problem is that I left off when they were split into my least favorite group of the new campaign (The Seekers) so that's why it's been harder to convince my brain to just shut up and catch up.

My plan right now is that I'm going to watch the next episode (maybe tomorrow if my brain isn't mush after work? Saturday if it is) with a summary pulled up. That way I can more easily fast-forward if I get to a point where I've lost interest without losing track of what's going on, which is the biggest reason that I usually force myself to not fast-forward with Critical Role.

I'm not sure if any of those plans will actually work, but I'm going to try. Because lately it feels like all I've been doing is working, sleeping, and blinking only to find out that hours have passed without me accomplishing anything.

Accoutrements.

The air quality alert's got me pulling my Corsi-Rosenthal fan out from under my desk and cranking it on for the first time this season. It seems to be doing its job well enough - and, being a lot more modular than my standing fan, is easy to elevate and put just behind me for added breeze.

Meanwhile, in the opposite vein of not throwing things away, I pulled a few books off my shelf. Granted, I filled in the empty space immediately, and it's still me deciding against giving that space to what had already been there. Large-scale Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode guides, mostly. I don't think I'll be pulling them out for that purpose ever again. Might as well see about sending them off to a better home than this one. Same with the DVD sets. If there were still in-person cons, I'd donate them to the raffle or the swap table. Maybe I'll contact some podcast hosts for a charity drive.

But before then, waiting a little while longer to swap back to the tower fan so I can clear off the bed to start packing. It should be easy, since I already got the hardest part out of the way: picking out my books and loading up my MP3 player.

Recent Reading, and on a Wednesday, even!

Chencia C. Higgins, A Little Kissing Between Friends (2024)

Black Sapphic romance between a music producer and an erotic dancer, best friends for three years, until the day they suddenly developed the hots for each other. I really enjoyed this, largely because the conflict felt like it had organic depth to it. Jucee, the dancer, isn't interested in dating around, but is in it for something serious or nothing at all; meanwhile, Cyndi, the musician, only does casual relationships, and goes into a tailspin over having gone to bed with someone that she decidedly can't be casual about. But even more than that: they feel like a new couple who are still learning how to constructively fight. (Does that make any sense? It's possible to be friends for years on the mutual agreement that you don't fight. But when the stakes are raised to romantic, you suddenly discover you don't know how to constructively work through disagreements with this specific person, that each of your reflexive habits during arguments are non-constructive (either in general, or are specifically incompatible with what the other person does in a fight), and you urgently need to figure out some way to productively work through arguments together if you're going to make this work.) So, yes, there's a lot of miscommunication missteps along the way, things that each of them should have handled better, but it felt realistic and organic, like a couple who is only just now figuring out how to work through problems together. The love and respect and will are there! The how-to is not—or not at first, anyway.

I also just really liked the characters and the supporting cast: the opening scene is when Cyndi came out to her father as a child, and it 100% sold me on why she loves her dad so much. Also loved the stud representation—I found this book on a rec list for Black butch and Black stud characters, and Cyndi did not disappoint.

Laban Carrick Hill (illus. Bryan Collier), Dave the Potter: Artist, Poet, Slave (2010)

Children's picture book about an enslaved South Carolina potter, known for most of his life only as Dave (later known as David Drake, after several of his owners). Dave is remembered today for his skill—he was one of the few who could make jars that held twenty gallons and more—and for his poems, which he sometimes inscribed on his pots.

—May 3, 1862

The text of Dave the Potter is a poem about the making of a single pot, from digging and grinding the earth to writing the inscription (not shown: glazing and firing). I was a little surprised at the inclusion of technical language without a glossary to define terms. An afterword gives a mini-biography of what is known about Dave's life, punctuated with a selection of his poems.

The illustrations are lovely and rich—the fold-out page of shaping a pot was especially beautiful. The illustrations are worth a second look, too: the backgrounds often show other enslaved characters, depicting the context in which Dave lived his life. I especially appreciated the burnt-umber ancestral tree, with the faces of Dave's ancestors and relations barely visible in its bark.

Compton Mackenzie, The Monarch of the Glen (1941)

I seem to have missed blogging about this, back when I read it?

Comic novel set just before WWII detailing the showdown between a Highland laird and the hikers that inadvertently ruined his hunting—the hikers are variously Scottish Nationalists and Londoners, and the one kind is quite as infuriating to Ben Nevis as the other. The dramatis personae also includes a rich New Yorker (who discovers a fondness for shockingly bold kilts) and his Canadian wife (who has had romantic feelings about the Highlands since she was a young girl). I had a particular fondness for the laird's two "hefty" daughters, who can pick up an errant hiker and carry them around over their shoulders. (Justice for Ben Nevis's daughters!)

Characterizations and incidents are exaggerated and over-the-top, a la Wodehouse, but the characters were fun, the narrator amusing, and the prose masterful. (Quite a few passages I read aloud to [personal profile] grrlpup, sometimes because the observation was on-point, but more often because the phrasing was so much fun.) I had to read with my phone in hand to look up all the references and allusions (some of which were NOT straightforward), but I usually found that rewarding, as well. (I... usually do not struggle this much with a vintage novel? But comedy/satire can be very of-the-moment, and I guess the popular culture of Interwar Britain is not my strong suit.)

Gutenburg.ca has a selection of some the author's earlier novels, but nothing that appears to be from this series.

Slice-of-life Manga Rec List

[personal profile] forestofglory posting in [community profile] ladybusiness
Thanks funnily enough to Superman vs. Meshi (which I talked about in my recent post about Superhero comics) I’ve been reminded that I love slice-of-life manga and I have been reading a lot of it!

Slice-of-life manga are stories about everyday life. They often center domestic labor, and feature community building. (These are things that I want in cosy SFF but have had mixed luck finding.) I find slice-of-life manga soothing but also I appreciate that they focus on things that often aren’t considered “story worthy” but are important.

The manga often have a wealth of detail about specific crafts or professions. What kind of tools people use, how things are made, etc. I always find this interesting and fun to learn about!

Slice-of-life manga are generally sweet and cute. They often feature small everyday moments and family and friends bonding. I have a special fondness for the ones that have very detailed descriptions of food, when characters say stuff like “The X and Y in this dish really brings out the Z” even though it makes me hungry sometimes.

Slice-of-life manga can overlap with all kinds of genres. The ones I’ve recced here are all set in contemporary Japan but I’ve also read a couple of post-apocliptic and historical slice-of-life stories, and I know there are other genres out there like fantasy that I haven’t explored yet.

I’m still learning the genre but I wanted to share a few of my favorites so far:

Hirayasumi by Keigo Shinzō— A story about two cousins living together in a small house in Tokyo. The younger cousin is an 18-yearold woman who just moved to Tokyo for art school, and the older cousin is a 29-year-old man who works a kinda dead-end job. He inherited the house from an old woman he befriended who didn't have any relatives. It’s very charming, I find both of the cousins relatable in different ways.

I really enjoy all the environments in this! The characters' rooms feel like a little glimpse into who they are. And the cityscapes are so warm and lived in!

(This is very popular at my library at the moment so this rec is for volumes 1-4)

Laid-Back Camp Vol. 15-17 by Afro— This is about a club of high school girls who go camping both together and separately. There are lots and lots of details about food and camping equipment, but I also enjoy the relationships between the girls and their growing friendships.

This also has wonderful landscapes. There are scenic campsites, of course, featuring lakes, mountains, trees, etc. But there are also good scenes of people traveling on buses, trains, roads through the mountains, etc.

Yotsuba&! #15 by Kiyohiko Azuma— A very cute manga about Yotsuba, a preschool girl, her adoptive dad, and their friends and family. It’s just full of everyday things like going shopping, trying new foods, and looking for rocks. Yotsuba is so lovable and also determined in everything she does, she really makes the whole thing work.

Silver Spoon, vol 14-15 by Hiromu Arakawa—This is a charming story about a city kid who goes to an agricultural high school to get away from everything. I love all the details about food, farming equipment, and rural life. The types of issues that Japanese farming families deal with in this book feel very familiar and true to life, from my limited experience of US rural life. They worry about things like land succession, how much to invest in big machines, etc. The author grew up on a farm and is clearly drawing from that experience.
Content note: death of named animals

Have you read any of these? What did you think? What other slice-of-life manga would you recommend?

I'm really enjoying my The Beauty's Blade reread! It's neat see all the wuxia tropes it uses and it's just the kind of story I'm in the mood to read at the moment. The Creator's Grace is also pretty enjoyable too.

I'm not thrilled about having to eye fresh produce with suspicion, but at least the blueberry jam I made  the other day came out tasty (I threw ~10 oz of blueberries, half a sliced lemon, 1/3 cup of sugar, and 2 tbs of water in a pot over medium heat for half an hour).

I like my fic draft, although now I'm fretting a bit over if it's too sparse w/r/t descriptions (or lack there of).

It makes me really happy that I've been seeing a bunch of hummingbirds at the feeder!

While it didn't work out the week that I was off work, I'd still really like to take care of switching to a smaller storage unit sooner rather than later, and anything extra I can raise would definitely help on that front.

I'm not sure if I didn't set my alarm this morning or if I turned it off and went to bed in such a daze that I didn't retain any memory of doing so. Either way, it threw off the day to the point didn't have nearly as much in it as I'd wanted.

I've double checked that it's set for tomorrow.

I've also grabbed another case of seltzer for the upcoming heat wave over the next few days. I hadn't realized I'd trained myself to rely on it until I saw I was down to one cold can in the fridge. It's a little uncanny at this point.
