What started off as a commissary for chef Paul Kahan’s Big Star, this airy Wicker Park diner quickly became its own hot spot. Don’t let the informality fool you: It’s still very much a chef-driven concept. Inspired by a road trip Kahan took through the South, Dove’s serves a mash-up of American Southern and Mexican cuisine, such as the spicy shrimp toast and al pastor fries. Retro touches like wood paneling along the walls feel classic rather than dated. The restaurant is daytime-only part of the week, with dinner served on Monday, Friday, and Saturday. If it’s nice out, sit outside on the patio, listen to the L rumble above you, and enjoy the people-watching.

Dove’s is super intimate. Most of it is counter seating. It’s just unpretentious, delicious food. People say it’s Tex-Mex, but I call it Mex-Tex because there’s more Mexican influence than Texan.

Paul's Perfect Order

One Off Hospitality

Taco Norteño

A generous helping of tender smoked brisket is topped with cheese and wrapped in a housemade flour tortilla.

Brisket Hash

Just this side of too much, this hearty all-day breakfast plate includes soft and smoky brisket, crispy potatoes, eggs, chipotle aioli, and Texas toast.

Chicken Fried Chicken

Buttermilk fried chicken with a killer crunch arrives ripping hot. Pearl onions and peas add tiny pops of flavor, while chorizo verde gravy jazzes up this classic.

Back to Life Cocktail

A medley of shrimp, mussels, and crab swims in a tangy mix of lime, avocado, and housemade hot sauce, bringing coastal Mexican flavors to the Midwest.
