MassDevice Medtronic Hub
Medtronic is the largest medical device company in the world, according to Medical Design & Outsourcing's MedTech Big 100.
The 2025 edition publishes on MDO in September!
A decade after Medtronic acquired Covidien in a $50 billion deal that created a medtech colossus, company leaders continue to whittle down operations to achieve better focus. The latest move involves the planned spinout of Medtronic Diabetes into an independent $2.8-billion-a-year company called MiniMed. Overall, CEO Geoff Martha says management’s efforts have reached an inflection point when it comes to accelerating the company toward higher, more profitable growth. Growth drivers for the company include AFib-treating pulsed field ablation systems such as Affera and PulseSelect, BrainSense adaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS), and a spine treatment tech business buoyed by Stryker’s decision to exit the market. Next up could be hypertension-treating Symplicity Spyral renal denervation, which company officials have described as a multi-billion dollar opportunity. Medtronic could also soon compete against Intuitive in the U.S. soft tissue robotic surgery market; it has submitted its Hugo surgical robot to the FDA for a urologic indication.
