«You're outmanned, laserblade.»
―Embo, to Anakin Skywalker[4]

Embo was a Kyuzo male bounty hunter who lived during the era of the Clone Wars. Embo carried a bowcaster and wore a large-rimmed circular hat, which he used as a weapon or a shield. Even as a capable solo hunter, he worked with several different groups throughout the Clone Wars. Embo was known to work as part of Sugi's band of bounty hunters in particular. On Felucia, Embo worked with Sugi's crew to defend a group of Felucian farmers from the Ohnaka Gang. On another occasions, he encountered the members of Clone Force 99 who were pursuing a masked Asajj Ventress who had stolen a list of undercover Republic Ghost Agents and fought her. Later, he worked for the Hutt Clans, battling against the former Sith Lord Maul and his Shadow Collective. Embo was also a member of Boba Fett's Krayt's Claw, working alongside hunters such as Bossk, C-21 Highsinger, and Latts Razzi. At one point, the group were hired by Asajj Ventress to help her break out her lover Quinlan Vos from Count Dooku's castle on Serenno. On Scipio, he managed to briefly match the legendary Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker in combat. He also owned a pet anooba named Marrok and a saucer-shaped starship called the Guillotine.

During the Imperial Era, Embo was hired by Mercurial Swift to capture Sugi's niece, Jas Emari. He worked alongside Dengar and Jeeta to accomplish this, but later joined Emari's crew. After the Battle of Jakku, Embo received funding from the New Republic, but when it ran out, he lived as a farmer on Felucia.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Embo was born on the planet Phatrong.[1] During the Clone Wars, Embo was working as a bounty hunter. Embo was often a part of Sugi's band of bounty hunters, alongside Rumi Paramita and Seripas.[4] Embo and Sugi came to be relatively close,[9] and Sugi often relied on Embo as a favored mercenary.[10] Embo also cooperated with the Duros bounty hunter Cad Bane, but managed to establish an own reputation as an elite hunter.[11]

During the Clone Wars, the crew was employed by[4] Casiss Midagatis,[2] the leader of the farming village Akira on the planet Felucia, to protect the villagers and their harvest of the medical herb nysillin from a gang of pirates led by Hondo Ohnaka. Shortly after they had been hired, the Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Ahsoka Tano crash-landed on Felucia and discovered the village. A brief standoff between the Jedi and the hunters took place before Casiss intervened, begging the two groups to work together against the pirates.[4]

The Jedi were initially reluctant to help the villagers, but were swayed after a brief encounter with Ohnaka, the leader of the gang, whom the Jedi had met once before. Refusing to be bought off by the pirates, the bounty hunters, along with the Jedi, began teaching the villagers to defend themselves. Embo, watching Skywalker train the villagers how to use a simple farming tool as a weapon, chuckled at their lack of experience. While the villagers were preparing to fight, Sugi spotted a lone pirate watching from a nearby ridge. Embo was sent to deal with the scout and the Kyuzo quickly took him out, disabling his Starhawk speeder bike with his bowcaster and blocking the pirate's shots using his metallic hat, before snapping the Weequay's neck with his bare hands. Skywalker commended Embo for his actions, but the fact that the scout would no longer check back in with Hondo meant the villagers did not have any time to waste.[4]

Soon afterwards, the pirates attacked the village. Dozens of pirates on speeder bikes swept into the village, firing at the defenders. Embo dispatched one of the pirates and commandeered a speeder bike, using it to take out several others. However, when Ohnaka arrived on the scene in his WLO-5 speeder tank.[4] Wary of the Kyuzo's natural athletic abilities, Ohnaka chose to shoot at Embo from a distance with his tank[11] and the bounty hunter was not quick enough to avoid one of the tank's blasts and was hit. With a badly wounded right arm, Embo was helped into the main barn at the center of the village by Sugi and the others, unable to participate in the battle any longer. After Ohnaka and his pirates retreated and fled the system, Embo left in Sugi's ship, the Halo, along with the Jedi, and traveled to a Republic outpost.[4]

Freelancing[]

At one point in 21 BBY,[13], Embo and Sugi, were present at the palace of Jabba the Hutt on Tatooine. While they were there, Pantoran diplomats Papanoida and his son, Ion, were searching for Greedo, a Rodian bounty hunter that had kidnapped Papanoida's daughters.[14]

At some point between 21 and 20 BBY,[15] Embo was present on the Galactic Republic's capital planet Coruscant with his pet anooba Marrok. At the same time, the Republic clone commandos of Clone Force 99 pursued the masked[16] Separatist agent Asajj Ventress[17] who had stolen a list of undercover Republic Ghost Agents. While the clones tried to stop the thief from boarding a spice ship in the Coruscant Underworld, Embo attacked the clones with his hat and electro shocks and told them in Kyuzon that he knew that they were after something valuable and that he had decided to acquire it first. He then shot at the four using his bowcaster while Marrok attacked the squad's leader Sergeant Hunter, before he and his pet boarded his starship[16] the Guillotine.[8] Both groups managed to follow the spice ship to a Pyke Syndicate base on Kessel. There, the two competing teams once again came into brief conflict before Embo and Marrok managed to catch up with the thief. The Dark Acolyte however, used the Force and her lightsabers to defend herself and managed to once again flee on a starship[18] to Doric Prime where she met up with the bounty hunter Aurra Sing.[17] In the Doric Prime power plant, the clones again encountered Embo who demanded to know what they were after and the teams again exchanged blaster fire. Clone commando Wrecker almost managed to pin down the Kyuzo, but he managed to shoot a pipe which flooded the room with water. Embo offered to pick the lock of a release valve in the ceiling of the quickly flooding room and both him and the clone troopers managed to escape. Outside, Crosshair threatened the bounty hunter, but Hunter offered for them to partner up, with Embo receiving some credits from the clones. The five then used a group of local sea creatures to ride back to the landing platform with both of their ships. There the clones encountered Ventress and Sing and initially assumed that Embo had betrayed them, but he and Marrok came back to attack Ventress. The dark sider managed to catch his war shield in the air and fend off Marrok while the clones boarded their shuttle to pursue Sing and left Embo behind, who reminded them of their deal. While his team members told him that Embo could fend for himself, Hunter had trouble leaving him with Ventress and before she could almost manage to kill Embo, Hunter shot the lightsaber from her hand to help him.[12]

Embo became one of the winners of the Box.

Later on in 20 BBY,[19] Embo was present on Serenno with eleven other bounty hunters, including Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi who was disguised as the Concordian bounty hunter Rako Hardeen, to fight in the "Box", which had been designed by Moralo Eval. Embo was one of the few hunters to survive the challenge, and was assigned by Count Dooku to kidnap Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine.[20] Embo then traveled to Naboo with the group, led by Cad Bane, to carry out the daring mission. The hunters successfully kidnapped the Chancellor, assuming the roles of Senate Commandos through the use of the holographic disguise matrix, developed by Sinrich. Embo rushed the Chancellor away but failed to escape and were arrested by Skywalker and Mace Windu.[5]

Embo did not remain in Republic custody for long, however, and[21] some time later that year,[22] he along with Marrok were seen sharing a table at Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina in Mos Eisley on Tatooine, while the pair were also present outside a hut in the town while Asajj Ventress met the members of Boba Fett's team of bounty hunters,[21] Krayt's Claw.[23]

Employed by the Hutts[]

Some time later, Embo was employed by the Grand Hutt Council as a bodyguard, along with Sugi, Dengar, and Latts Razzi. When Maul and his brother, Savage Opress, representing the Shadow Collective, threatened the Hutts, Embo and the others sprang into action to defend their employers. At first the bounty hunters were able to beat the brothers back, but they were driven back when the forces of Death Watch joined in the attack. Embo went up against Opress on his own, saved from the Zabrak only by the strength of his hat. When it was clear that they could not defeat the two brothers, Embo and the others retreated, abandoning their employers.[6]

Targeting Clovis[]

Embo reports his success to Darth Sidious.

Sometime after, Embo traveled to Scipio, the home planet of Rush Clovis, whom he had been hired to drive off the InterGalactic Banking Clan vault world. Embo tracked Padmé Amidala with a probe droid when she arrived to request a "loan" from the bank. Later at night, he attempted to "kill" Clovis when his droid spotted him at Amidala's guest quarters. Later the next day, he killed Amidala's aide, Teckla Minnau when his probe droid spotted her planting an explosive in the Main Vault power generator, which the Muuns arrested Amidala for espionage of the power generator. The Kyuzo then began to survey Clovis' quarters, and when Clovis arrived along with Amidala and Skywalker, Embo disabled the trio's hover sledge. As they fled down in a speeder, Marrok forced them to pilot down the mountainside. Embo used his hat to sled down the mountain in pursuit of the speeder carrying his target. However, he was held at bay by Skywalker until he was Force push and the trio was saved by R2-D2, who was piloting their T-6 shuttle ship, saving them before they could go over a cliff. Having accomplished his mission, Embo informed his employer, Darth Sidious, that Clovis had escaped—just as the Dark Lord had planned.[24] The story of how Embo sled down the mountain on Scipio in pursuit of a target came eventually to be heard by Hondo Ohnaka.[11]

Krayt's Claw[]

In the latter months of the war, Embo began taking jobs on a regular basis with Boba Fett's team, Krayt's Claw. One job in particular found the crew hired by former ally of the Sith, Asajj Ventress, to assist in the rescue of her lover, Quinlan Vos, from his captivity on Serenno. This was his first time working with the Dathomirian Nightsister and former Sith apprentice. Embo and his anooba Marrok traveled to Serenno on the Guillotine and rendezvoused with Krayt's Claw and Ventress at the planet's spaceport. While the mission proved to be a failure, Embo and the rest of Fett's team escaped a direct encounter with the Sith Lord Count Dooku, alive.[8]

Reign of the Empire[]

"…But in the end, he was out of his league before he even tried getting the jump on me. It's just too bad he couldn't tell you about it himself."
―Lando Calrissian exaggerating his defeat of Embo to Nien Nunb[25]

In 5 BBY,[26] Embo and Cad Bane were depicted in some graffiti art by Sabine Wren, aboard the Ghost, the ship of Hera Syndulla.[27]

Around 2 BBY,[28] Embo joined his fellow bounty hunters IG-88, 4-LOM, Dengar, and Krrsantan to investigate a jailbreak on Kalarassi Five for the Galactic Empire. There, Kaluub Akjee, one of the escaped prisoners, and his fellow escapees had disguised themselves as stormtroopers. Akjee told Embo and the others that wanted criminal Venga Liss had broken in, taken the prisoners, and headed for the slums, urging them to go while they could still catch him. Embo and the other bounty hunters, unaware that Akjee wasn't a stormtrooper, followed Akjee's direction and ran off toward the slums, but IG-88 stayed behind and discovered Akjee's true identity.[29]

Following the Battle of Endor, Embo took on a job to collect a bounty placed on Lando Calrissian, a prominent general in the Alliance to Restore the Republic who had been responsible for the destruction of the Galactic Empire's second Death Star. Embo located Lando's ship, the Millennium Falcon, at a refueling station and snuck onboard the vessel. The stowaway Embo sabotaged the ship, keeping it from taking liftoff. While Calrissian was attempting to conduct repairs, Embo cornered him with his bowcaster. Embo spoke to him, though Lando could only understand the words "Death Star" come from the Kyuzo. Lando realized that Embo was there to collect the bounty on him and tried to offer Embo a deal that involved splitting the bounty. Embo protested and aimed his blaster, but Lando stalled long enough for one of the Falcon's pipes to burst behind Embo, knocking the hunter into a wall and incapacitating him. While Embo got his bearings, he was tied up by Calrissian. Lando brought the captive Embo outside the ship, where he exaggerated what had happened to his co-pilot, Nien Nunb. Lando had also managed to complete repairs on the ship, and credited an old friend inside the Falcon for helping him stop Embo.[25]

Jakku[]

In 5 ABY,[30] Embo, along with the bounty hunters Dengar and a Rodian named Jeeta, was hired by Mercurial Swift in order to capture Jas Emari, Sugi's niece. The Black Sun crime boss Gyuti had imposed a bounty on Emari's head. Embo joined Swift's party because he wanted to clear his debts. After learning that Niima the Hutt had taken Jas captive on Jakku, Embo and the other bounty hunters traveled to Niima's temple to pick her up. Swift went into Emari's cell to fetch her, intending to collect the bounty for himself and abandon his crew. However, Jas broke free and overpowered her captors.[9]

After escaping her captors, Jas headed to the hangar only to find Embo and Dengar guarding Swift's Corellian shuttle. They began speaking, and during the conversation Embo mentioned the death of Marrok, which had happened years before. Knowing that Embo had incurred debts, Jas tried to remind Embo that he and her aunt Sugi had worked together. Emari convinced Embo to let her take the ship, saying that he was old and that Marrok always liked her. Dengar tried to stop Jas but she managed to escape on the Corellian shuttle.[9]

Later, Jas Emari and the New Republic operative Norra Wexley returned to Niima's temple. In return for ferrying Niima back to her temple, the Hutt crime lady had outfitted them with an old Imperial shuttle, old uniforms, and clearance codes to enter the Main Imperial base on Jakku. Embo and the rest of Swift's party cornered Jas and Niima. While Norra escaped with her son's droid Mister Bones aboard the shuttle, Jas stayed behind in order to allow Norra to proceed with her mission to capture Grand Admiral Rae Sloane.[9]

Following Emari's capture, Swift attempted to travel to Nar Shaddaa to deliver Jas to Boss Gyuti. However, they were unable to leave due to the Battle of Jakku. During the wait, Jas managed to convince Embo, Dengar, and Jeeta to turn against Swift. She offered to secure them pardons from the New Republic if they switched sides. Swift tried to object but was thrown out of the shuttle by Jas with the help of Dengar. Embo, Jeeta, and Dengar then became Jas' crew. They took Swift's shuttle to the Jakku Observatory where they picked up Norra, who had joined forces with Sloane and her estranged husband Brentin Lore Wexley to stop Gallius Rax from destroying Jakku as part of the late Emperor's contingency plan.[9]

After the Battle of Jakku[]

Following the Battle of Jakku and the Galactic Concordance, Embo and the rest of Emari's crew received full pardons from the New Republic with the help of Jas' friend Sinjir Rath Velus, a former Imperial loyalty officer who had become an adviser to Chancellor Mon Mothma. They also received enough money from the New Republic and continued to work with Emari as her crew.[9]

In 9 ABY,[31] Hondo Ohnaka mentioned Embo and various other bounty hunters in his book The Secrets of the Bounty Hunters. In it, Ohnaka talked about his interaction with Embo on Felucia and how they gave him a negative opinion of the bounty hunter and theorized that Embo had still not forgotten or forgiven his attack on him during the battle.[11] That same year,[32] the Hunters of the Outer Rim competitor Imara Vex owned a costume[33] and a weapon wrap inspired by Embo. Vex considered Embo to be one of the best and most efficient bounty hunters of all time, and was impressed with his skills and abilities such as how he used his hat.[34]

Hired by the Hutt Twins[]

Embo on Nevarro during the early New Republic Era

During the early New Republic Era, specifically during or after 11 ABY,[35] Embo and his new anooba companion named Keibu[36] were hired by the Hutt Twins to capture both Rotta the Hutt and Din Djarin, when he betrayed their deal. Tracking a Razor Crest to the planet Nevarro, Embo was at a spaceport, when he saw the gunship fly pass to a cabin, where it landed near a modified N-1 starfighter. Soon after the Anzellan Droidsmiths came and then a TR-RL3 Terrapin-class bulk tanker arrived to take Rotta away from his great-cousins, which Embo watched from afar through binoculars. At night while it rained, Embo approached the cabin where his presence alerted two Blurrgs, which Djarin had Grogu and four Anzellans to escape under a small passage. Embo began his attack where he went on top of the roof and attempts to breach the cabin but Djarin tracked his heat signature and used a grav charge causing Embo to fall through the ceiling and attempts to kill him using his IB-94 blaster. Although Embo used his saucer-helmet to withstand the blaster shots and used a flash grenade to blind Djarin's helmet when using the thermal vision to track the Kyuzo before sprinting outside with Djarin following him. This was a distraction allowing Keibu to capture Grogu, but his anooba captured Minch, one of the Anzellan Droidsmiths, instead. Despite this Embo manage to capture Djarin in a stun net, shocking him unconscious. Embo whistles for Keibu to come to him and contacts his employers who order him to bring Djarin to Nal Hutta. Summoning his ship, the Guillotine, Embo and Keibu left Nevarro taking Djarin and Minch.[7]

On route to Nal Hutta, Djarin awoke and saw Keibu play with the captured droidsmith. Djarin uses one of Grogu's sweets to trick the anooba into releasing the smaller prisoner and keep him safe in the cell. Hearing Keibu's growl, Embo descends down into the holding cell, still in his seat in the cockpit. As Embo stands up, Djarin attempts to negotiate for his release, knowing that Kyuzo are smart and that he's paying off his loan from the New Republic but Embo pressed a button on the wall that shocks him unconscious, which Minch witnessed.[7]

Embo worked for the Twins to hunt Djarin.

Embo worked for the Twins to hunt Djarin.

Arriving on Nal Hutta, Embo brought Djarin to the Hutt Palace, unaware that Minch was still aboard and went into the swamp. Once in the throne room, the Twins had one of their droids paid the bounty hunter who then took the binders off Djarin and left. The Twins also reveal to Djarin that Embo also brought Rotta to them a few days earlier. To make Djarin suffer for breaking their agreement, the twins trigger their trapdoor and he falls into their pit where he fought five Amani warriors and a dragonsnake comes and injures him before Grogu used a grav charge to blow a hole that allowed them to escape.[7]

After Djarin escaped their dragonsnake, Embo was once again hired by the Twins to find Djarin after both their Droid Gotra sentry droids and Amani warriors failed to find them in the swamps. Meeting a local alien fisher named Gatori, Embo asked if the local saw Djarin or Grogu, unaware that the alien told Grogu to hide before Embo and Keibu came. As Embo continue to question the alien, due to Gatori denying seeing a Mandalorian despite him being infected by dragonsnake poison, Keibu sensed Grogu nearby behind a crate, which Embo took notice but the alien diverted the anooba to get away from his fish, which Embo called Keibu off and the two left the alien's camp to continue tracking Djarin.[7]

After a few days, Djarin recovered from the dragonsnake poison, Embo stood in the Mandalorian's way to kill the Twins in the throne room, with Keibu causing him to misfire his new Amban phase-pulse blaster and Embo engaging in a duel, while the twins fought Rotta, and Keibu attempted to kill Grogu. Charging at the Mandalorian, Embo jumped straight at him, using his helmet to block his blaster fire before pinning him down and throwing him across the room with one of his sickles. As Djarin pulled out his two machetes, the two engaged in hand-to-hand combat, Embo used two sickles and manage to gain the upper hand against Djarin using both his advance martial art skill to knock him off his feet and use his saucer helmet to blow him back disarm Djarin of his swords and breaking the second one. The two continue to fight with Djarin pinning Embo to the ground but upon seeing Rotta was destroying the trapdoor, Djarin manage to get away and grab his Amban rifle, as Embo gets up to attack him but Djarin manage to stun Embo with the prongs, leaving him unconscious for the rest of the fight, which Keibu went to Embo's unconscious body, despite Grogu calming her down with the Force. Rotta caused the ground to the pit to break, which Grogu rescued him with the Force, while the twins, an unconscious Embo, and Keibu fell into the pit and were left with the dragonsnake. Due to the waters, Embo recovered and found a hole for him and Keibo to escape. Despite the Hutt sister, pleading for Embo to help them, Embo left the two to being devoured by their pet, as he and Keibu left in the same tunnel Grogu blew up earlier.[7]

Meeting with Bazine Netal[]

"You encountered the Millennium Falcon—tell me about it. Deal?"
―Bazine Netal, to Embo[25]

Eventually, the New Republic funding Embo had received ran dry and he informally retired from bounty hunting. Embo chose Felucia to settle on due to its value to him, starting a life as a farmer there.[25]

In 34 ABY,[37] Embo was sought out by mercenary Bazine Netal, who was searching for the whereabouts of the Millennium Falcon. Netal learned from junk droid Teetee that a bounty hunter who once owned a pet anooba and an armored hat had been in contact with the Falcon, and she immediately recognized who the droid was referring to.[38] Netal found Embo on Felucia, though the Kyuzo reacted poorly to her arrival and, after a short chase, he cornered her and she offered him a deal. Netal knew that he was low on credits and offered him some in exchange for information on his encounter with the Falcon. Despite the initial language barrier, Embo told her the story of his failed attempt to capture the ship and collect the bounty on Lando Calrissian's head after the Battle of Endor. Netal was underwhelmed with the story and did not believe it was worth the credits, but held up her end of the bargain. As she prepared to make her leave, Embo gave her what information he had on the current location of the ship. He told her that it had surfaced on Corellia, and directed Netal to meet with[25] Lady Proxima[39] to find out more.[25]

Personality and traits[]

"Well, whoever's said you've lost your step is wrong. Bounty hunter, farmer- whatever you want to call yourself, you're every bit as dangerous as I would have hoped... Embo."
―Bazine Netal[25]
Embo and Marrok track their quarry.

Embo and Marrok track their quarry.

Embo was a quiet, stoic, and disciplined individual, speaking only in his native language,[4] which made it difficult for others to understand him. He was also mostly ruthless, dispatching foe after foe without mercy or remorse (although he did feel remorse for accepting a bounty on Jas Emari, as he was unwilling to hurt her), and using his unorthodox weapons to lethal effect.[24] Embo had no code beyond getting paid.[2]

Although commonly freelance, Embo was a constant and reliable ally of Sugi, who could always count on him to show up when she needed him.[10] Embo was also respected by her niece Jas Emari. Having incurred debts by the time of the Battle of Jakku, Embo reluctantly accepted an offer from Mercurial Swift to join his crew and collect Boss Gyuti's bounty on Jas. However, Embo was unwilling to hurt Jas since they had worked together in the past. On one occasion, he allowed Jas to escape. On another, he and his fellow bounty hunters Dengar and Jeeta turned against Swift after Jas convinced them to join forces with her in return for securing pardons from the New Republic. Due to their dislike for Swift, Embo did not object to Dengar and Jas throwing Swift out of his shuttle.[9]

Hailing from the planet Phatrong, Embo was a hulking[2] male[1] Kyuzo who stood at 1.99 meters, or 6 feet, 6 inches.[2] He had orange eyes and green skin.[3]

Skills and abilities[]

"Embo, your bounty tallies were second only to one last season."
―Dooku to Embo[20]
Embo, equipped with his bowcaster

Embo, equipped with his bowcaster

A deadly fighter, Embo was skilled in a variety of areas. Extremely acrobatic and agile, Embo could jump very high and run faster than any human,[4] while his proficiency in unarmed combat made him the equal of any Jedi or Sith when it came to close-quarters fighting. Although in his fight with Savage, Embo only survived thanks to the strength of his hat.[6] Embo was also very skilled with his chosen weapons, using his rimmed hat to take out opponents from a distance. He was also adept at using his hat as a shield. Embo was a good shot with his bowcaster,[24] and a capable sniper. He was an expert tracker.[2] Hondo Ohnaka assumed that Embo's preference lied in hand-to-hand combat where he could use his species' natural agility to his advantage.[11] His many missions during the Clone Wars, led him to be considered among the upper echelons of the bounty hunting profession[11] and at one point during the Clone Wars, Embo was considered second only to Cad Bane in the entire galaxy.[20] Bane personally held himself in higher regard but also respected Embo's ability.[40] Embo was skilled in sabotage, able to tamper with the Millennium Falcon and prevent it from taking off.[25] Embo was also very effective at infiltration.[2]

Equipment[]

"Embo was one of the greatest bounty hunters of all time. Also one of the most efficient - he used his hat as a weapon AND a shield!"
―Imara Vex[34]

Unlike bounty hunters such as Cad Bane or Jango Fett, Embo relied little on technology. Embo's primary weapons were a bowcaster that could easily fold away for travel and his unique metallic, wide-rimmed hat, which doubled as a shield and throwing saucer weapon. During the Clone Wars, Embo often wore a chest plate, with an ammunition bandolier slung over his shoulder, and wore a long red fighting skirt decorated with gold symbols.[4] On Scipio, Embo used macrobinoculars, an imagecaster, and a hovering, single-eyed probe droid, which was compact enough to fit in Marrok's mouth before being activated with an thin antenna.[24]

He owned a saucer-shaped starship called the Guillotine,[8] which shared the same design as the Flarestar-class attack shuttles and Corona-class armed frigates of the Weequay Ohnaka Gang,[41] the vessel had a regular entry ramp and an additional private entrance used by Marrok.[8]

At some point he appeared to obtained a cybernetic piece, or a vambrace he wore, in his lower right arm. The cybernetic piece can hold a flash grenade within it, could remotely summon his ship the Guillotine, had a built-in holoprojector and comlink to contacts his employers, and could trigger his stun net traps. While fighting Djarin on Nal Hutta, he wielded two sickles, which can also briefly lock onto a target and allow him to throw them around.[7]

Behind the scenes[]

Development and The Clone Wars[]

"So Embo's out there now. Who knows what Embo's future gonna be. He's got a cool hat. Maybe Embo likes wolves too. We have to see."
―Dave Filoni in the StarWars.com episode feature for "Bounty Hunters"[42]

Embo first appeared in the seventeenth episode of Season Two of the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, titled "Bounty Hunters", that first aired in early 2010. He was voiced by supervising director Dave Filoni.[4]

Embo was originally created for Star Wars creator George Lucas' planned live-action television series Star Wars: Underworld as a "rough" piece of concept art which he later gave the crew of The Clone Wars. Both Lucas and Filoni liked the design and decided to include it in "Bounty Hunters". While many of the details of it were still unresolved, it already featured his signature hat[43] and the team modified it only slightly. For the series, he was designed by Pat Presley, with concept art finished in October,[44] 2008.[45] Presley also designed his heavy bowcaster, which he finished the same day.[46] Kevin Beentjes noted on the official StarWars.com blog that Embo's design closely resembles concept art of a Neimoidian warrior with a breathing mask created by Sang Jun Lee[47] 2005 prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith[48] and his helmet also closely resembles concept art of a Mustafarian created by Derek Thompson for the film, finished on June 12, 2003,[49] which had been partially inspired by the 1991 film Zeiram.[50]

During production, Embo became a favorite character at Lucasfilm Animation and "Bounty Hunter"'s director, Steward Lee, and Filoni wanted to expand on his action in the episode.[44] The character's alien language, was devised by Filoni and is actually a purposefully badly enunciated version of the Smurfs books, written in French, which belonged to editor Nic Anastassiou who kept them in the office to read to his son. Filoni was originally hesitant to voice a character in the show and kept it a secret from most of the crew.[42] Some of Embo's dialogue was presented in English in the episode's script.[46] At the time, he was one of only a few alien language speaking characters in the series due to problems with subtitling and the creators worked around the problem by having other characters like react to his words in regular Basic, with Filoni comparing him to R2-D2.[44] Embo's species, the Kyuzo, was named by Filoni for the character[43] Kyūzō[51] played by Seiji Miyaguchi, in the 1954 film Seven Samurai[43] to which the episode is dedicated.[46] Originally, Embo was intended to be killed off at the end of the episode, however, after discussion about the character among the production team who felt that he was a "cool" character, they decided to have him injured by Hondo but survive, as seen in the final version and redid the scene.[42] The unfinished version can be seen from the behind-the-scenes clips about the season included in the DVD and Blu-ray releases.

Embo was first ever publicly pictured in July 2009 during that year's San Diego Comic-Con[52] and Presley's concept art was revealed that September.[53]

In the in the episode featurette for "Bounty Hunters" on StarWars.com, Filoni pondered the possibility that Embo would like wolves too[42] like himself.[43] The character then later appeared with a pet anooba named Marrok in the season four episode "Bounty" in 2012.[21] He was created by Filoni[43] who also drew a sketch of the two. Filoni has likened the relationship between Marrok and Embo to that of[54] one of his favourite characters from the G.I. Joe franchise, Snake Eyes, and his dog Timber.[43] Embo's starship the Guillotine was originally planned to appear in the season six episode "An Old Friend" with concept art designed by Russell G. Chong, but it was ulimately cut.[55]

Before the cancellation of The Clone Wars, Embo, Marrok and the rest of Krayt's Claw would have appeared in an episode being hired by Asajj Ventress to rescue Quinlan Vos from Count Dooku's castle on Serreno. An already animated scene shows the bounty hunters fighting the Sith Lord. During the fight, Embo would have thrown his hat at Dooku, but he would dodge it and instead grap both Embo and his flying helmet with the Force and throw it back at him, with Marrok catching the helmet mid air before it hit his owner. The episode would later be adapted into the 2015 novel Dark Disciple.[56] The novel would also mark the first appearance of the Guillotine,[8] which was later pictured for the first time in the comic Hyperspace Stories: The Bad Batch—Ghost Agents 1, which was written by Michael Moreci and illustrated by Reese Hannigan[16] and published on February 12, 2025.[57] Embo was also set to make an appearance during a[58] four-episode arc[59] starring Boba Fett and Cad Bane. In a clip revealed during the "Animated Origins and Unexpected Fates" panel at Celebration Orlando in 2017, Embo and Bossk were seen siding with Bane during a stand-off against Fett and other bounty hunters, with the Kyuzo dropping Sugi's EE-3 carbine rifle and his Anooba Marrok going to drop her knife. While Bossk betrayed Bane by suggesting giving Fett a chance to prove himself, Embo was just sitting idle, abandoning Bane to his fate.[58] Early concept art of a scene featuring Embo and the other bounty hunters walking down a street was drawn by Filoni during one of the series' last writer's conferences.[60]

Further appearances[]

Embo was depicted on the walls of the Ghost in the first season of the animated series Star Wars Rebels in 2014,[27] with the room having been designed by Embo's original designer, Pat Presley.[61] At Celebration Anaheim in April 2015, when asked if Cad Bane would appear in Rebels as a character, Dave Filoni said that currently there were no plans for him to appear and, while not impossible for the future as a possibility, he would prefer Embo because he liked him and his dog. Filoni also joked that the series' writers would told him that Marrok would be dead which made him upset.[56]

Embo was added to the mobile video game Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, developed by EA Capital Games, on August 9, 2018,[62] with his introductory "Marquee event" designed by Mike Profeta.[63]

Embo made his live-action debut in the 2026 film Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu,[64] directed by Jon Favreau and produced[65] and co-written by Filoni.[66] The film also features the Guillotine[7] and a new pet anooba named Keibu as Filoni thought that Marrok would likely not be around anymore, while also saying that he had figured out a story of what had happened to him. A piece of concept art of Embo and Keiu for the film was done by Nick Gindraux[43] and some his gear in the film was designed by Patrick Beals.[45] He was portayed by stunt performer Donald Mills and his performance was heavily modified by Industrial Light & Magic's animation team to account for his height and in the final film, Embo is computer generated. The film's Animation Supervisor Hal Hickel spoke with Lucasfilm Animation Director Keith Kellogg and the other members of the "legacy Clone Wars team" to ensure that his appearance stayed true to the original character.[43] Embo's appearance in The Mandalorian and Grogu was first revealed in it's second public teaser on February 17, 2026.[65] Later that day, Pat Presley shared on social media that he was surprised and excited to see Embo return and had always wondered if the character would ever appear in live-action.[45]

Contradictions[]

Embo appeared in the comic Flight of the Falcon, Part 3: Home Again, which established his informal retirement from bounty hunting on Felucia.[25] This was later referenced again in the description of Imara Vex's costume "Embo Bounty Hunter" from Star Wars: Hunters, in which Vex reflects on Embo as being fully retired, leading her to ponder if she will ever do the same.[33] The game is set in 9 ABY,[32] thereby meaning Embo must have retired by that year.[25] However, Embo went onto appear as an active bounty hunter in The Mandalorian and Grogu,[7] which is set during or after 11 ABY.[35] Indeed, Star Wars: The Secrets of the Bounty Hunters supports that Embo was still active in 9 ABY.[11] Therefore, this article disregards his mention as being retired as of 9 ABY from Hunters.

According to Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Character Encyclopedia - Join the Battle!, the name "Clone Force 99" came in honor of the deceased Clone 99, who died during the Battle of Kamino in 21 BBY per Star Wars: Timelines. As the name "Clone Force 99" is used on Wrecker's helmet in Hyperspace Stories: The Bad Batch—Ghost Agents 1, the series must take place after the Battle of Kamino. The story is also set while Asajj Ventress is a Separatist, placing it before the Battle of Sullust, dated to 20 BBY according to Timelines. As such, Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories: The Bad Batch—Ghost Agents must be set between 21 BBY and 20 BBY.

  31. Star Wars: The Secrets of the Bounty Hunters establishes that the in-universe book was written after the war against the Pykes, but before the statue of IG-11 was taken down in "Chapter 17: The Apostate." Star Wars: Timelines dates the war against the Pykes to 9 ABY, and "Chapter 17: The Apostate" takes place in 9 ABY per the reasoning here. Therefore, The Secrets of the Bounty Hunters must have been created in that year as well.
