- "This isn't about revenge. It's about preventing another war."
- ―Ward, to Din Djarin and Din Grogu
Colonel Ward[6] was a human veteran of the Rebel Alliance who served as a pilot and officer in the New Republic Defense Fleet Starfighter Corps as squadron commander of the Adelphi Rangers during the New Republic Era.[1] During that time, she[2] contacted the Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin on Adelphi Base[5] and sent him on a mission on the Outer Rim[7] to take out both Imperial Remnant forces and gangsters of the Hutt Clan.[5]
Biography[]
Rising the ranks[]
During the Imperial Era, Ward served as a pilot for the Alliance to Restore the Republic, where she rose the ranks[4] to become Colonel[6] during the Galactic Civil War against the Galactic Empire. Following the Rebel Alliance's reformation into the New Republic in 4 ABY,[8] Ward became a pilot and officer of the New Republic Defense Fleet Starfighter Corps, eventually becoming squadron commander of the Adelphi Rangers, a New Republic Defense Fleet starfighter squadron based from an outpost on the planet Adelphi that protected the interests of the New Republic in the Outer Rim Territories.[1]
Working arrangements[]
In 9 ABY,[9] Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin and his foundling Grogu offered their services to Adelphi Rangers pilot Carson Teva to hunt Imperial warlords, which Teva agreed to do despite knowing it would not be approved by the Republic.[10] Despite this, Colonel Ward eventually agreed to[4] employ Clan Mudhorn to hunt down high-value Imperial warlords wanted by the New Republic.[2]
During or after 11 ABY,[11] Ward hired the services of Clan Mudhorn to hunt down Imperial Remnant warlord Commander Barro, who was leading his Imperial holdout from a base on an icy planet in the Outer Rim. While Djarin and Grogu indeed were able to take out the forces of Barro, Djarin was put in a messy situation that forced him kill Commander Barro rather than capture him for the New Republic, losing the Republic valuable intel.[1]
Personality and traits[]
- "We're protecting everything the rebellion fought for."
- ―Ward, to Din Djarin and Din Grogu
Colonel Ward was committed to protecting the New Republic and everything the rebellion fought for
Having come up in the Alliance to Restore the Republic, Colonel Ward was completely committed to protecting the New Republic[4] and everything the rebellion fought for. To this end, despite being a respected New Republic officer with the high rank of Colonel, Ward continued to serve as a pilot with the role of squadron commander for the Adelphi Rangers. Despite her respected status, Ward still pointed out her critiques in the work of those under her, causing the Lasat pilot Garazeb Orrelios to wish the mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin luck prior to the latter's meeting with Ward after a messy mission. Despite this rough demeanor, Ward still praised Djarin went the hunter successfully captured Commander Janu Coin. A human, Ward had Auburn hair and light skin,[1] and was 1.78 meters tall.[2]
Equipment[]
When not operating as a pilot, Colonel Ward wore a red collared shirt, brown pants, and a brown belt, and brown boots. Over her shirt, Ward wore a desaturated green jacket that had a red and white New Republic provisional-era crest on each sleeve near the shoulder. On the right side of her jacket, Ward wore a gray command insignia with four red dots that denoted her rank of Colonel.[1]
While piloting her T-65B X-wing starfighter, Ward wore a white flak vest over an orange flight suit, attached to which was a Diagnostech life support unit. In addition, Ward also wore a grey flight harness around her waist, a pair of black gloves, and a pair of black boots. While flying, Ward wore a blue and white K-22995 light flight helmet with gold accents, with a gold New Republic provisional-era crest additionally painted onto the helmet.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
- "I play a wonderful character who is, you know, in a position of authority. And I have to send the Mandalorian out on a mission on the Outer Rim where all the bad stuff happens."
- ―Sigourney Weaver on Ward
Sigourney Weaver as Ward
Ward was created for the 2026 movie Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu and is portrayed by Sigourney Weaver.[3] When Weaver was first approached about the film by director Jon Favreau in a video meeting, she was shy and admitted that she hadn't watched the prior The Mandalorian TV series and Favreau responded that she should start watching the series. Weaver then watched the series and accepted the role in their next meeting. Weaver had previously already stared as the character Ellen Ripley in the Alien science fiction horror franchise as well as other blockbuster films and has said that she was glad to still have been considered for a role in a Star Wars film, which usually feature lesser-known actors.[4] Weaver said that she had never really considered acting Star Wars, but joined because she loved the character of Djarin's apprentice Grogu and has said that really enjoyed working with him[7] and got emotional when she first met his puppet on set[4] around August 2024.[12]
Weaver first revealed her role as part of the film during an interview on August 27, 2024 and began filming sometime afterwards with the production wrapped by early December.[13] Still footage of Ward was later shown exclusively to audiences at during Celebration Japan on April 18, 2025.[6] The character was later first publicly featured in the teaser trailer released on September 22 of that year[14] and identified in an accompanying image released by The Walt Disney Studios on Getty Images and in an article on StarWars.com, both released that same day.[15]
