My PCP has been after me to try Metformin for about 3 years now. I've been using herbs and trying to adjust my diet, but that's just not working as well as it used to (I'm fucking hungry ALL. THE. TIME. again) so I said yes to metformin.

I'm borderline for it's use. My fasting blood sugar is consistently 100-103, but my A1C is 5.7 to 5.9

I've been taking it with my evening meal.

Intense Benadryl-stupor like sleepiness and brainfog for the first 12 to 14 hours after taking it? Yes! And despite taking an extended release B-Vitamin.

Feeling vaguely nauseated? Yes! (At least I'm not hungry all the time?)

Sudden onset "everything must go" trips to the toilet? YES!

Of course, my husband takes it with no problems other than a mild brainfog, which is why he takes it at night and feels great all day.

I'm going to try taking for a few more days, before I call and see if there is something else to try.

I'm sorry metformin gives you icky side effects, that's unfortunate. I'm not sure why you're taking it though, if you're only pre-diabetic! Has your PCP ever tried suggested a dietician/nutritionist? Maybe they could give you some guidance on what to eat to feel fuller? I feel like I'm missing something! But *hugs,* trying to take care of ourselves can get so stressful. It's good you're working on it and aware.

Things have changed! When I was first pre-diabetic, they said: eat better, exercise more, go away. And then when I was diabetic, they sent me to a two hour class, which had some interesting info except it mainly seemed to be: eat vegetarian and all will be fine. Which I didn’t want to do, not 100%. I think it was at least 6 months to a year before they gave me metformin. I’m grateful side effects haven’t been much of an issue for me. (I’m blaming my occasional spaciness on age, not meds.)

I’ve been thinking if I should ask my doctor for a referral to whatever nutrition classes they have now. It does seem like that stuff changes regularly and a brush-up would be good.

Sorry the medication is causing so many bad side effects! Is there a way to cut the dose in half or switch to another type of pre-diabetic medication?

I have the impression most medications should start at child sized dosages. I'm just now starting statins and it seems like it's the higher dosages that cause the most side effects. (though some people reported side effects at the lower dosages too).

oh that's super frustrating! metformin was really hard on me the first week or two I was on it, mostly in an upset stomach and loss of appetite sort of way. my dad takes something that is a combo of metformin and another similar type of drug because the metformin on it's own gave him too many bad side-effects. I hope your doctor is able to help you find a better solution
