I took a punt on a crime novel that the mysteries reviewer of the Literary Review seemed very keen about.

And not only did it fall into that category we were recently discussing, of mysteries/crime novels/thrillers, where one suspects the writers would really like to just be writing a novel about these people/this community/this setting but these days you can't do that, you have to have a body in there somewhere and some detection going on -

It was way clunky.

I was shocked! shocked! to see that it is traditionally published by a firm which has, or used to have, a significant reputation (Faber & Faber), because clearly they are not doing much on the editorial side these days -

Even the very pro-the-book reviewer mentioned pointed out that there is a massive and absolutely basic blooper about property law which has significance to the plot, such as the plot is, which one would have thought would have got picked up by a competent editor on first reading the ms, let alone with a decent copy-edit. This was not the only blooper, some of which may be charitably attributed to that thing which one has observed too much since word-processors became a thing, spell-check says it's spelt correctly. It does not pick up that it's the wrong bloody word in context.

Okay, it is apparently no 4 in a series and maybe this has built up enough cred that readers will take for granted that Our Detective is a cop, because I found the procedural details a little vague and misty, but that may be due to having misspent significant parts of my young years reading procedurals?

I don't read a lot of modern cosy-ish crime - because this struck me as really fairly cosy - but is viewpoint-hoping within scenes now A Thing? - i.e. we start in what appears to be standard tight third person, and then suddenly we have viewpoint of Other Person in the scene and then flip back. Maybe I am a fuddy traditionalist who thinks you sticks with the viewpoint you came in with.

Possibly there is a hope that the sequence will get took up and made into a TV series as actors might well flesh out the rather flat characters....

I am the more annoyed as the reviewer put me onto Sally Smith, so this was a particular disappointment.

How to add a star background to my icon page

Hi, I am looking to add my layout main star background on my icon page. I have searched and tried different CSS codes but nothing works. I know nothing of S2 and really stumped how I can achieve this preferably using CSS.

My journal theme is Silent Night by nornoriel. And I would like to keep that. I have seen other journals with the background animaled graphic on the icon page but I don't know if that is customization by CSS/S2 or included in the journal layout.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Name: Well, i mean here it's earthandspirit, which isn't super catchy. Maybe terraspiritus? idk

Age: very old. I was blogging on LJ before the Russians took over

I mostly post about:mental health, random thoughts - to be honest I haven't posted in a while

My hobbies are:video games (vintage story, hytale, valheim, coral island etc), theology, Irish language/history, tarot, virtual worlds and other things, depending on my mood

My fandoms are:Hannibal, Supernatural, Heated Rivalry, Doctor Who, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, Hello Kitty

I'm looking to meet people who:are just real people who write about things they enjoy, are more than just their opinions, aren't swayed by just taglines and instead would rather learn about the hot topics than just react to them.

My posting schedule tends to be: sporadic AF

When I add people, my dealbreakers are:anti LGBTQ+, narrow minded right-wingers, antisemitism, antichristian/antireligion (not a dealbreaker as much as I just know we wouldn't mesh well)

Before adding me, you should know: I'm Canadian, she/her, raised Jewish, but practicing Christian (liberal, progressive, non-toxic), trying to be a follower of St. Francis , because he wasn't about church, or dogma, he just wanted to live what he thought was a good life. I am also a member of a few different Druid orders, 2nd Degree Gardnerian (no longer practicing), was previously poly but now in a monogamous relationship, still raising kids, and I have multiple rescue animals. non-drinker, ADHD diagnosed, currently estrogen deficient and sometimes very cranky XD

* Kraken are going to have the most travel time by a chunk this year. Also, we are heavily front-loaded with divisional games. Hopefully, its manageable and the individual games are well spaced. The amount of roadie back-to-backs last year sucked.

* Still waiting for the contracts to pop for Melanson, Prokop and Tolvanen. Melly is RFA so I am not worried, but it's weird he'd unsigned at this point.

* Since Dunn and Canner are in promo images for the Kraken season opener, I assume that it would be a violation of hockey laws to trade them between them and now, so I can stop worrying.

Portland Pride

I went briefly because Lexi Lafleur Brown was having a signing at one of the booths. She makes good online content and is involved with the Kraken org a bit. Her husband is an ex-NHL player who is now the Kraken's color commentator.

Probably not going to read it, but I went to the event, bought a book and got it signed. It was a hockey-related-ish thing, so I went.

Image

I'd have enjoyed being down there more, but I wasn't up for bullshit today and if you are going to go to Portland Pride you need to be able to tank some bullshit. The signing was the same day as the parade so I had to navigate several blocks of crowds. That was fine, and I got to see some of the parade. But, when I finally got there I had to stand in a short line to get in. The guys behind me were leather gays. One thwacked me in the head with his fan. I think he was gesturing to someone inside? Anyway, he was facing me when it happened, and I think he was trying to gesture through me like I didn't exist.

My reaction was pretty much to deflate and think 'yeah, of course this is how things are going to go. Why expect anything else?'

On one hand, I could give a million good reasons why my reaction is very valid considering all my experiences with Portland Pride and the local queer community, but also you can't be like that at Pride. You've got to just let that kinda stuff roll off you, especially since so many people come to Portland Pride to party. They were probably either already fucked up, still fucked up from last night, or a combo of both.

Anyway, I got got inside, found the booth and then got an iced coffee to wait until the signing started.

Anyway the event itself had cleaned up the vendor's list a lot? There was a maker's market alley and only one artist was AI slop? No obvious Amazon resellers? Some of the art was like 'doll from a a thrift shop with spikes stuck in it's head' but like, this was way better than what I've seen in the past. I can criticize, point out that there are so, so many artists so much better suited to the event, that would really showcase our scene and make it look like... not crap. But still, massive leap forward. It's no longer plagiarism-a-palooza.

On the downside, to stabilize the ground, there was a layer of sand. Somehow, like sand dust or something was being constantly kicked up and it was hard to breath. Stuff needed to be wetted down badly. As always, no places to sit and almost no shade unless you had a VIP ticket. Not sure how much of that is on the event and how much is on the city.

Freemont Troll! There is a cute little park nearby.

Portland also has a troll bridge, but it's, uh, a bit different. I should revisit it and see if it's still even a thing.

Image

Gas Works Park spotted in the distance. I'd gotten off the bus at Freemont because my brain went 'wait, Freemont Bridge... is this where the troll is?' and hopped off. (BTW Buoy, the sea troll who is the Kraken mascot, is canonically that troll's nephew)

It was a heck of a game! Spain's offense absolutely dominated for most of the game, but Argentina's goalie was an absolute wall. He was incredible and deserves recognition for it. I would definitely say he was better than Spain's goalie, but Spain's defense was a little better and Argentina had problems getting shots on goal. Poor Messie did not have a good game, I don't know if he was tired or was holding back some to let the rest of his team shine.

Regardless, Spain was undoubtedly the superior team and scored in the 106th minute! There were two other goals by Spain - none by Argentina - but there were fouls with both of them and they did not count. I'm not clear what happened the first time, the second was an off-sides.

The only downside to the event was at the end when a buffoon with bad hair, an ill-fitting suit, and a scowl participated in handing out the medals to the two teams. He even tried to photo-bomb the winners at the end and had to be lead off by whom I presume was the head of FIFA. I imagine the players, being professionals, are used to the occasional downsides of problems with the venues where they play.

I understand this particular clown was a big supporter of Argentina and gave their country an awful lot of money in the not distant past. Bummer day, dude!

I didn't get to watch any other games, but this one was scheduled in a time slot that was very convenient for me to catch, so I did.

ETA:I forgot one very nice thing - Spain is simultaneously holding the World Champoin title in both men's and women's football! That is incredibly cool!

Oh, and the guy with the bad hair got massively booed when his face was shown on the Jumbotron during the singing of the Star Spangled Banner!

1. I'm pretty much over my cold. A little bit of lingering cough, but otherwise all right.

2. We had planned to go to Disneyland today, since Carla hasn't been in a couple weeks while she was out of town, but with her train being so delayed, we decided to just stay home and rest and do an after-work Disney trip tomorrow instead.

3. Chloe kisses!

Name: C.K. (Chameleon, Lyko, or Ylva if you would like)

Age: 36, nearly 37, growing old mandatory, growing up optional

I mostly post about: Culture Club/Boy George & Jon Moss (my hyperfixation of 22 years and counting), a-ha, Linkin Park, my OCs who are realer to me than most people, witchcraft/spirit work/folk healing/moon rituals/grief magic, retro gaming, emotional overshares that read like journal entries from a possessed poet, fanfiction that makes people unwell at 2am, chaos, and the occasional Reddit food rabbit hole

My hobbies are: Writing fic that's 70% emotional breakdown, 20% worldbuilding, and 10% people getting railed in a meaningful way, hexing cults with sigils and sass, collecting music like a religion, drawing OCs, being a haunted glitter goblin with eyeliner and vengeance, building 48-year fanfiction universes with fully documented timelines and named children, going to work like a normal person and coming home a completely different entity. I'm currently contemplating doing a vlog on youtube.

My fandoms are: Culture Club (I'm writing a massive AU called Colour By Numbers spanning 1978-2026), a-ha, Linkin Park (Bennoda forever)

I'm looking for people who: are too weird for Reddit, too raw for Instagram, too smart for Twitter/X, overshare about their OCs like a religion, cry over character development, understand that Jon Moss deserved better, write long posts, and don't find it weird that I've named all the children in my fictional universe including the surprise baby

My posting schedule: Erratic. Sometimes a lot. Sometimes I vanish for months and return with an entire AU timeline and a new OC

Dealbreakers: Racism, ableism, transphobia, homophobia, antisemitism, being a dick, Scientology apologists, anyone who thinks Mike Shinoda is evil because of an Instagram reel, "isn't wrestling fake?", "you still like Linkin Park?", and anti-Zionists/anti-Israel people.

Before adding me: I'm a Norse Pagan. Autistic and ADHD. I write mpreg unapologetically. I am a Zionist and tired of explaining what that actually means. Pro-AI. I smoke weed. I am extremely defensive of Jon Moss and will write essays about it. My AO3 is CampCornette69 and yes that's a wrestling reference. Some scenes from the Victoria Pride Parade

The parade started a solid 45 minutes min late. About half an hour into the wait, I started quoting Gandalf and drafting this post, and police motorcycle outrider put his kick stand down.

Finally the dykes on bikes make a break for it, including a young man wearing only chaps and a trans pride flag as a cape.

The Songhees nation came next, including a woman on an electric scooter wearing a headband of rainbow-dyed cedar strips.

The Esquimalt nation followed with a truck covered in gay and trans pride flags superimposed with the nation's crest

After that drummers in regalia, who keep forming a circle which is then blessed by a two-spirit person with an eagle wing fan.

Another truck decked with cedar boughs, carrying drumming elders, including one on oxygen.

Some highlights from the mix of businesses, community groups and service providers that followed:

The trans-inclusive football team, roller derby, circus and dance troupes were doing routines as they walked in the parade, which took an impressive amount of co-ordination and energy on a warm day.

Someone dyed their golden retriever rainbow.

The trades school had a flatbed truck occupied largely by butch women (and one twink) in coveralls, and one woman in a rainbow tutu pushing along a hard-hatted small child atop a wheeled toilet.

All the fire trucks with rainbow bunting.

Paramedics rolling along a stretcher with a service dog flopped out on top of it.

A pickup truck absolutely plastered with hand cut out rainbow Stars of David, with someone in the window holding a sign that read: "David Loved Jonathan"

A legal firm with a sign that read: "Queer beyond a reasonable doubt."

A person whose diaphanous trans-flag-coloured jellyfish costume completely obscured them, holding a sign reading: "We are older than their fear."

A troupe of people of various genders dressed as sailor scouts for no apparent reason.

Signs and shirts reading:
"And they were teammates 🏈"
"Dismantle the Doctrine of Discovery"
"Living Proof a gay man can sparkle at 86"
"Refugees welcome!"

Number of floats playing "Pink Pony Club": three.
Number of other songs heard more than once: zero.
I think we need to glom on to more 21st-century queer music.

We went to the festival after the parade, but it was too crowded, so we didn't stay long.

Seattle Day Trip Pt 1

Day started out odd. The porters were trying to get a guy in a wheelchair onto the train using a sort-of mobile elevator that was hand-cranked. It was not going well. The guy was being jerked back and forth by how it was rocking as it was cranked, and he was in one of those wheechairs where the back is slanted and there is head-support. So someone who presumably can't even sit up unassisted is just being knocked around. One of the porters got frustrated and walked away loudly saying 'Guess we're not going anywhere today, folks!' He projected his voice like it was an actual announcement.

But, the employee he went and got fixed how something was jammed. We weren't even that delayed. I wondered how that guy felt, and if he was worried that they'd be able to get him back off the train at his destination.

On the train there was an announcement saying that it was Friday, crew was tired... and sarcastic. Don't take anything they say seriously, unless it's an emergency.

Interesting start to a trip.

Soon, using mobility devices on the Cascades line will be easier because of the new cars! Upgrading rail lines is a long process. The cars were ordered years ago. They arrived in America this year. They've been tested on east coast lines and are now in Washington. They are still finishing tests, so we don't know when they'll come online. But, they will have ADA accessible bathrooms! Also, instead of having to climb like 5 feet to get into the car, the new ones will be at almost platform level, so I assume boarding with physical difficulties will be easier.

Also, capacity is going up! they've been unable to meet demand for rail travel between our cities for years. It's about to become cheaper, easier, nicer, etc. Trips wont have to be booked as far in advance.

Ooh, actually, just grabbed a screen cap from a youtube video about the new trains. Boarding will look like this:

Image

I wish I had a comparison pic, because if you've never tried to climb aboard old rolling stock, it's a challenge. I found this on google:

Image

But the stairs for the current Cascades cars are way steeper and the floor of the cars is much higher than the car shown in that pic. The current Cascades cars are older. The wheelchair guy had to be cranked to a height like level with the top of my head to be able to roll in. That janky hand-cranked thing really needed to be seen to be believed, but also taking pics would have been creepy.

Now I wish I'd taken a few pics of the old rolling stock as I'm unlikely to be on it again before the new stuff is in. Before and after pics would go hard.

Anyway, actual Seattle stuff later, I need to head out for the afternoon
