Mental Health in Oklahoma
Data from the Oklahoma Mental Health and Substance Abuse agency shows that the state ranks fifth in the nation for mental illness rates. In all, an estimated 700,000 to 950,000 residents are living with either a mental health condition or a substance use disorder.
The Sooner State’s Healthy Minds Policy Initiative was founded in 2019 to improve these numbers, and had made major strides over the past few years. Since its inception, the initiative has secured more than $77 million in mental health resources and served more than 862,000 residents.
The state is also establishing strategic partnerships between hotline operators, service providers, and city-based programs to expand access to mental health crisis services. This has resulted in a 57% decrease in the number of mental health-related calls placed to police officers in Oklahoma City alone.
Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHCs) across the state work closely with local law enforcement agencies and fire departments to offer alternative crisis services through resources, including Mobile Crisis Centers and Urgent Recovery Centers.
