Mental Health in Wisconsin
The latest data from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services shows that 57,832 people were seen across the state for a mental health condition in 2023. Of those, 30,040 sought crisis services while 11,661 attended outpatient counseling.
The mental health crisis here has reached new heights in recent years. In 2022, Wisconsin was ranked as the best state in the nation for mental health access and care. In only two years, its placement dropped to 13th in 2024.
The state is now investing critical resources in an effort to reverse this trend and reclaim its coveted top spot once again. The government is using $100 million in funds from the American Rescue Plan to improve access to care and resources.
This includes a $9.1 million investment in Wisconsin’s behavioral health workforce and $5 million to remove barriers to care by installing telehealth platforms at community places like libraries, food pantries, schools, and homeless shelters.
