Outreach

OIS Outreach is designed to help our Pitt international community to succeed before, during, and after their time at the University of Pittsburgh. OIS hosts a series of programs called Experience America to help scholars, graduate students, and their families adjust to life in the United States and learn more about the Pittsburgh area. Our Online Presentations include videos with information on how to use OIS services, getting around Pittsburgh, immigration benefits, and important information about the University of Pittsburgh.  Our Symposium Events are designed for Pitt administrators or faculty members to learn more about working with our international community.

Communications

In OIS we have many ways we provide information to our international community and partners around campus, but at the end of the day everything boils down to two categories of communication: compliance and relationship building.

  • Compliance is the majority of the information available on our website, including our News page which has been updated each time there is an announcement, policy, or decision related to immigration by the U.S. government.

    • Students – OIS emails students individually when there are concerns about their immigration status such as under-enrollment.  The Immigration Specialist for the students will work with them directly to resolve any issues.
    • Scholars and Employees – OIS emails scholars and employees reminders, news, and other information on a monthly basis.  There is a listserv available for those outside this population to be cc’ed on the monthly emails.  You can register for the listserv here.
    • Questions – If you have any questions about compliance communications, please contact Sara Jones (sara.jones@pitt.edu).
  • Relationship Building includes the Outreach and Events sections of our website, as well as some of the regular emails we send to our community.

    • Students – OIS sends weekly emails to enrolled international students during the fall and spring terms (monthly in the summer) with information about upcoming events, interesting things about Pitt/Pittsburgh, reminders, and other helpful information about living in the U.S.  There is a listserv available for those outside this population to be cc’ed on the monthly emails.  You can register for the listserv here.
    • Scholars and Employees – Upcoming events and engagement opportunities are included in the monthly email scholars receive.
    • Alumni and Affiliates – Once a student or scholar leaves the university, we email them twice a year to let them know what is happening in the international community at Pitt.
    • Dependents – We have many students and scholars who are joined by their families in our community.  We email them on a quarterly basis with upcoming events and ways to connect at Pitt and in the community.
    • Questions – If you have any questions about this type of communication, wanting to have information included to these populations, or more; please contact Kati Von Lehman (kvonlehman@pitt.edu) for assistance.

In addition to the communication channels listed above, OIS is starting to build an OIS Affiliates Teams group for everyone connected to our office at Pitt through their work or interest with the international community.  This is designed for academic advisors, admissions, department administrators, outreach partners and more!  This group will have announcements, resources, updates, and engagement opportunities.  While we are still building this platform, you can request access in Microsoft Teams with the code: dttd8hk.  (Please remember it is currently a work in progress!)
